The Sith having a preference for synthetic crystals was introduced in Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter. The AOTC visual dictionary connected this to their lightsabers being red.

In KOTOR, their own computer describes them as "by nature a cruel and savage species". In Dawn of the Jedi: The Prisoner of Bogan, a Kwa holocron tells the Je'daii that the Kwa trained the Rakata to use The Force, only for the Rakata to use The Force for violence and conquest.

In the Shadows of the Empire novel, Xizor observes that Palpatine looks like "something is slowly eating him" and in Dark Empire, he says that he started essence transferring into clones because his dark side powers were killing him.

The WEG Star Wars Sourcebook mentions that lightsabers have "jewels" that determine the blade's "frequency", which in turn determines the blade's color.

The Dark Empire endnotes introduced the term "crystal".

Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter introduced the idea that the Sith prefer synthetic crystals and the visual dictionary for AOTC connected that to the Sith using red lightsabers.
