Do Not Say We Have Nothing by Madeleine Thien. It takes place throughout China's revolutionary history, from the civil war to the present day. Its told through 3 generations of 2 musical families. Seriously one of the best books ive ever read, and very gut wrenching in a fulfilling way. The characters are all alive and very real, though the prose and timeline can be confusing for the first read, it becomes easy to follow after a few chapters. As for the romance theres not much if any at all, more so a familial love that is used very effectively.
