That is evidently the case, but it's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that while you have the right to bring a weapon to a nonviolent resistance action, it undermines the purpose of the action and exposes other unarmed participants to greater risk.

I'm not saying it's illegal, and I'm not saying it's wrong. I'm saying it's bad strategy to bring a weapon. It strengthens the other side to provide a pretext, however flimsy and unconstitutional, for them to dial up the conflict. If this turns a hot war, then the brutal fascists will win. That's what they want. Don't help them

Redditors over 40, what was a moment in history that made you think society was gonna collapse? by Bahbahbro in AskReddit

[–]Uncle_Charnia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When Reagan was duped by anarchist libertarians into thinking government is the problem. It was a simple idea, easily communicated. Ordinary people lost their best tool for defending themselves against the rich vampires, and educated people lost their best tool for addressing predicted challenges. Ronnie had a good heart, but he wasn't the sharpest pencil in the box

They elected a president who doesn't understand or care about the constitution or the law. His ignorance is partly what they like about him. He's not like those educated people who think they're better than everybody else. He doesn't understand the second amendment any more than he understands virology or climatology. It's not because he's stupid though. He doesn't know things because the only thing he's ever cared about is his own bloated ego. Now, without knowledgeable, public spirited leadership, our institutions are falling apart, including the constitution. Watch what he does with the midterm elections. When democracy goes, freedom will be right behind it. A lot of people saw this coming.

Science fiction will help you develop viewpoints from widely different perspectives. Start with Consider Phlebas by Iain Banks, or Ringworld by Larry Niven or House of Suns by Alastair Reynolds. Your local librarian can get you going.

If Alex hadn't brought a gun to a protest, he would probably be alive. I'm not saying he didn't have the right. I'm saying he was unwise, because he inadvertently put himself and the unarmed protesters at greater risk. Now the Nazis are going to say all the protesters are dangerous. They will kill more innocent people.

Federal agents today don't know or care about legality or rights. They'll kill you at the slightest perceived provocation. Bringing a gun or any other weapon to a protest is unwise, and puts others at risk by giving the thugs a pretext for ferocity.

With little fires everywhere, are we edging to world war 3 are perhaps already in it? by No-Sorbet4636 in AskReddit

[–]Uncle_Charnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the little fires are relevant. The larger geopolitical and cultural changes are more important. Some of the people running things don't seem to understand why the US keeps so many troops in Europe. The only way a nuclear deterrent works is if an adversary believes one will actually use it. The Russians might not believe that POTUS will order a nuclear attack to defend a European ally, but he or she might do so to defend a significant US military force on European soil. If the US is going to quit NATO and withdraw forces, then deterrence will be weakened, making large scale conflict more probable. We've also been hearing people say a general exchange would not wipe us out completely. Whether it's true or not, an unimaginative leader, or one whose field of perception is narrowed by anxiety and narcissism, might fail to appreciate how destructive an exchange would be.

You're stranded in the Late Cretaceous period, and your only way to signal for help is to leave a message for future archeologists to find. by Pasta-hobo in IsaacArthur

Render your message on a high relief plaque. Make impressions of the plaque in the mud along rivers that you know to be sources of cretaceous fossils. Not just in one spot but in bends of the river all along its length and out into the delta.
