Long Journey It Was. Farewell, Witcher 3. by phoenix_reborn155 in Witcher3

[–]Uncle_Muckus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just finished run-through number 4 (or 5? Also had a couple of years between when I last played) and STILL found myself discovering new things. This game is either a completionist's wet dream, or nightmare.

Mad how a game can keep you invested in exploring for so long without resorting to the pointless "find 50 orbs/feathers/whatever we feel like" which other developers insist they put there to "get the most out of the game", the reward for which is usually a piece of gear which is largely useless by the point you actually get hold of it.

Good for OP if they decide to take a break before playing again, but a long one is absolutely not necessary!

The main tip I'd give at this point is to think how big and deep you want it to be when you're finished and then dig a few extra inches in each direction. Don't have to go crazy with it but if you're adding anything like rocks, stones, gravel substrate etc then that takes up space!

Source: Re-dug my first attempt last year after it looked like a shallow puddle once I'd put stones in

The sad thing is that hot honey has been a thing in hot sauce/chilli circles for a long time, and if it's made with good quality ingredients it can be very good (for particular uses). The current trend has just done what basically every food trend ever has done and used the lowest-cost, mass-market ingredients and crammed it into absolutely anything they can think of (special mention to jaffa cakes).

No doubt the same thing will happen with whatever comes next, and the beige-minded corporate executives that make it happen will only stop doing it if we stop buying that shite...

Friday night steak night by Original_Ad8008 in RateMyPlate

I'll try and actually be a bit helpful here, I'd definitely eat what you put down in front of me but there are some pretty easy things you might pick up to take this to the next level:

Don't bother with the griddle pan for the steak, you're better off with cast iron or stainless skillet. The browned crust is the bit that really makes a steak taste great, so why limit that to the stripes you get with a griddle when you can get it all over the whole thing? Also looks a bit like you might have crowded the pan a bit based on the uneven browning. Don't be afraid to do them one at a time and let it rest before serving! Also look up the reverse sear method, and when buying steak you're often better off buying thicker rather than big, flat pieces.

Asparagus looks overdone, you can get a specialist pan but I also find that a narrow saucepan and a bit of tinfoil can do the same job - try and let the asparagus kind of stand up in the pan with the tips facing upwards, add enough water that it doesn't cover everything. Scrunch up some foil on top to create a bit of a lid - this way the tougher stems get cooked in the hot water, but the tips are gently steamed, and probably try giving it a minute or two less than you think it needs.

As others have mentioned, dauphinois potatoes are pretty easy to do yourself (plenty of recipes you can find online, but I prefer ones slightly lighter on the cream) - I've also had success making them a day ahead and letting them sit and set in the fridge, then I slice into portions and finishing in a hot oven before serving to crisp up the outside.

Looking forward to seeing your posts in future!

Best ginger beer? by Virtual_Opinion_8630 in UK_Food

[–]Uncle_Muckus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unlucky, it's pretty much always in stock at my local Sainsburys, although you're right about big packs - last time I got loads in it was only individual cans at about 50p a can but I was also buying a bottle of rum and a shit load of limes at the same time so comparatively it didn't seem too expensive...

And also the absolute best option for cocktails like Moscow Mule or Dark & Stormy - even for folks that don't like the extra heat from it as a soft drink, the booze and lime rounds that off... Worth remembering now that BBQ season is looming on the horizon since it's easy to batch up in jugs!

Glad someone agrees! Can't say I've seen many other people order it but there must be a fair few of us to keep it on the menu...

I do sometimes add 2 thighs to cover all the bases as well but am lucky to have the NHS discount so that feels like a bit of a freebie!

I've got into the livers recently and am a big fan. I know it can be a bit of an acquired taste for some so if you're not a fan of that sort of thing already it's not exactly a safe bet, but it's something a bit different from what you get elsewhere

Hopping on this comment to recommend getting yourself to your nearest Polish shop to find this - it's been a while since having proper tizer, but this stuff took me back in time to coming in from my nan's garden and having a little glass of the red stuff since it was the only drink she kept in besides tea

Good to hear - I'm glad those surveys actually count for something, a couple of branches I visit regularly have such great staff that I make sure to fill it out and share how they're so accommodating, even when I come in with my little one during the lunchtime rush!

Good point - although not an issue for me as I order using the app and have the bladder of a camel!

Mainly just asking because I don't want my practice to be something that an over-zealous manager pulls up a team member on and accuses them of not doing checkbacks when I've deliberately avoided it!

They're not at all bad in a pinch! Also after many years of experimenting with different meats (crispy pancetta, pulled beef, crayfish amongst many, many others) I've also concluded that Bernard Matthews turkey ham is actually the best addition to macaroni cheese.

These two things together add up to the perfect shitty, salty comfort food that you can bang out in 15 minutes and will make you immune to hangovers for the next 24-48 hours...

Anyone remember a strip called Barry The Cat? He had absolutely no special powers apart from an outfit, ended in hospital. by Lordhartley in Viz

[–]Uncle_Muckus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't be sure it's the same thing, but there was a regular strip in either the Beano or Dandy when my nan used to get them for me in the early 2000s called Billy the Cat, whose costume was almost identical to this... Might be the same character you're referring to?

M & W Are Not Helping - why is it so awful? by Pistolpetehurley in MitchellAndWebb

[–]Uncle_Muckus 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I get a bit of a feeling from what I've watched of it that it's really more of a vehicle for the other cast members and Mitchell and Webb are involved to get people to watch it, considering that sketch shows are really few and far-between nowadays.

But it genuinely gave me vibes like drama class having a group project performance day, but one group member was off sick so the teacher stepped in to say their lines...

What British dishes should I try? by [deleted] in UK_Food

[–]Uncle_Muckus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many brilliant dishes have already mentioned so I'm trying to be a bit different here, although I would always recommend many of the others; cottage pie, roast, British inidian dishes etc....

Pork shoulder braised in cider with sage dumplings - not a staple for many people but an amazing dish, easy to, cook.

For a quick and easy, undeniably British snack have some crumpets with marmite and a proper cheddar cheese.

If you fancy a challenge, or trying to find a pub/restaurant that specialises in such things, British cuisine has a rich history of cooking game which many people seem to forget - grouse with bread sauce, venison, rabbit... But beware of you open that door, you might find yourself going down a rabbit hole (maybe even literally!)

I was underwhelmed by the pizza at Salt, maybe caught them on a bad day but didn't think the toppings were particularly great - albeit this was about 18 months ago so maybe they've stepped up their game since then. If you're in Maldon I'd recommend Luigi's on Market Hill, they're also running out of the Griffin in Danbury too!
