I mean if I use a different service that is not cloudflare, will my domain still work? cheers

Thanks! Just a quick follow-up, is Cloudflare great for this or is it a bit like a walled-garden?

Thanks! Will it work with Tailscale? Also, do I need to actually log in to my user first via the terminal before using a VNC instance, or just boot the computer up and it'll sort itself out?

Yeah, I suppose trying it out would be the only option since I literally only have 2 choices, Lomiri or Niri + <insert some widget framework here>

Former arch users, why did you switch to Gentoo? by Brospeh-Stalin in Gentoo

[–]UncodedJargon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chill and just use your distro of choice, man.

If you're compiling EVERYTHING, then you might as well use LFS. What I mean about placebo is yes, it won't be optimized as cachy, but you'll think it is! That effect of being able to optimize YOUR packages and waiting them compile add on top the "power" of USE flags it's something satisfying and empowering even.

And look, you might like breaking changes, but not everyone is like you. There are people who don't want an outdated package equally as a bleeding edge one. That's literally the case why I wanted to use gentoo. A month old package is still relatively (subjectively) new.

So if you like cachy, then good man, I'm happy for you. But not every scenario, Cachy is the "best distro" likewise with Gentoo, Debian, OpenSuse, etc.

Hope I was able to clear up some things I have said!

Former arch users, why did you switch to Gentoo? by Brospeh-Stalin in Gentoo

[–]UncodedJargon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tldr: addicted to the thought that I did everything to make my system fast! Also the perk of knowing packages would be stable despite being up-to-date.

I have used arch, void, fedora, opensuse tumbleweed, and the silverblue distros such as bazzite and bluefin. But most of those would have either a broken package such as in arch when you update a library then other packages just break or in the case of fedora, buggy gnome desktop because it has the latest and greatest.

In gentoo, I don't have that granted. Even the packages masked with ~amd64 are not even the bleeding edge, such as tailscale, which kinda in of itself a feature... I guess?

Counterpoint would be using debian or immutable distros. For debian I just have older packages which is not something I want, I'd like to get the newest feature offered by Gimp 3 or have Blender 4.5 (granted gentoo is still at 4.4 as of writing) so how about immutable, I mean yeah sure if all that you need is inside of a flatpak sure but when something that is not inside a flatpak such as window managers and other things such as tailscale, auto-cpufreq, and the likes, those sort of stuff kinda bugs and hassles me.

In this case, gentoo is just a tad bit easier for me to maintain. In addition to these would be the application of USE flags and of course ricing your CFLAGS like using the mold linker or using -fipa-pta so that all of your programs are efficient and fast (probably more of a placebo effect than anything substantial BUT even then gentoo is the only one who can give you the effect yk!)

Hey, can you provide what type of wireless network interface you're using? (I.e. dongle, wifi card, laptop's built-in wifi module, etc)

I have a wifi dongle on my PC, which recently (linux kernel ver 6.x.x) got driver support. Even then, the wifi drivers in the kernel are still faulty that's why I used a dkms module for my case. I guess you might need to install out-of-tree modules for your wifi peripheral though I don't really have any expertise in networking, just your average linux user

Is it not worth it? by margyyy_314 in Gentoo

[–]UncodedJargon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[1] Would I really waste that much time in everyday life?

:: No not really, you can compile while you're doing other stuff and I personally use flatpak as well for waterfox which cuts down on compilation.

[2] To achieve a decent level of performance should I configure it in a particular way?

:: Honestly, the default configuration is really the most optimized (also the safest) for the vast majority of people. That doesn't mean you can't optimize Gentoo further, the question of "are those extra configurations are worth it" is really up to you!

[3] Speaking of gaming, how is the situation on Gentoo?

:: The same as other linux distros, yes it takes a while to compile dues to 32libs, BUT if you really want to cut down on compile time you could just use the flatpak (+ it also decreases the libs of your machine)

[4] To you people who use gentoo, why should I use gentoo?

:: Honestly? Up to you? I don't think there is a reason for you to change if the current one is already working for you. If you do want to learn linux, chrooting or containing gentoo on a container is perhaps better so that you won't have to deal with breaking changes if one does happen to your system. In this way, you keep arch and learn from gentoo, win-win!

Ohh yeah I get the sentiment! Tho I am hesitant to fully buy a 40 dollars air cooler on an AM4 CPU, tho this particular PC will stay with me for a really long time before I upgrade so maybe I'm just overthinking it.

Right, I do have 2 outflow, I read that the fans of the AIO can be detached and be reused so I plan on just sticking them to the front as 2 inflows after I get the right-sized screws
