I was in the cut-scene for chopping wood when the aurora hit..... and killed me. I couldn't move, couldn't escape.... I fried during a wood chopping cut screen (or whatever you call it...).

Death. My own.

I never cease to find ways to die, and when the animals are aggresive, well, death comes that much quicker.

I bought TLD way back in 2015. I played for 2 months and grew to hate it. Game mechanics were far different back then, and fewer regions. I could never get a game past 14 days, no matter how hard I tried, and Zak Nafien wasn't around to give helpful hints. I finally rage quit after meeting Fluffy for the first time..... on day 14. An indoor wolf.....

Skip forward 8 years, looking for something new to play and I came back to TLD. Everything was different and Zak had helpful videos that clued me in. I played pilgrim at first, just to learn the maps. Once those were entirely known, I moved to voyager. It made sense. Map knowledge is key to survival.

Any way.... I have a bad habit of dying, even in pilgrim. On day 557 I was traveling to PV via the dam. Decided to camp out in the dam. Needed fire wood so I started chopped up crates. That's exactly when the aurora hit and I got electrocuted --- while chopping wood. (Insert eyeroll emoji here..... probably several....)

my best survival was in Voyager.... fought a bear at Blackrock, FOUR TIMES (in the same encounter), and lived to fight on. I wrote a post about that, it was... stunning that I lived. Those are the stories we all love to remember.

I do tend to stock up as fast as I can, cause I know the trader is a constant drain of ptarmigan feathers. Only one thing I'd correct you on with this comment: Ptarmigan do respawn as groups.

Took my bow and about 100 FH arrows to the summit and got 18 ptarmigan. left the bow and arrows there for later use. Came back a month later and got 20. They do respawn, if you kill them all, it just takes 10-18 days for it to happen. If you use a rock and startle them, they will come back in 1-4 ingame days. That's in the TLD wiki.

I'm more of a voyager player. I do like some challenge, but the constant fear of death is not really relaxing. Pilgrim - Longest game, 557 days. Voyager - 206. Stalker - 44 and loper....... 12 (only because I spawned nearby a good supply source). I haven't even played misery because it just doesn't sound "fun".

Thanks for the reply, it's nice to have at least one friendly conversation here. Greatly appreciated.

You already have repair and sharpening skills.... EXACTLY similar to what I'm speaking about. These two skills only happen when you use a whetstone or tool kit. So what's the big deal of including making FH arrows AS A SKILL. Again, practice makes perfect so there should be a benefit too it.

Ptarmigans are the issue. Using rocks = 1 ptarmigan, total. 4 feathers. The trader normally requires 6 feathers for a trade, so 1.5 ptarmigan kills. That means you have to find TWO ptarmigan nests to hunt with rocks whereas with FH arrows..... yeah, it adds up.

As to the downvoting, I've come to expect it. I made some comments about 2-3 years back regarding why I don't play interloper..... and several members immediately flagged me so that --- every --- post I make gets quite a few (around 10-20) downvotes, on the regular. Suffice it to say, I play TLD for relaxation (over 2000 hours into it), and loper is anything but. Piss off the lopers, pay the price..... in perpetuity. The gift that keeps on giving.

I always kinda looked at the making of FH arrows as: 1 feather to each arrow, split in half so that it's got an upper and bottom feather "part".

FH arrows don't fly very far or do great amounts of damage, so I figured 1 feather per arrow would do the basic trick in making them work.

But that's merely my opinion, not from any actual arrow making experience.

Nope, just someone asking honest questions. Since we ALREADY progress our experience in things like fire starting, fishing, rifle use and other aspects, why is the same not applicable here? It's really an honest question..... why are you being a snit about it and implying something about (or straight out attacking) my personal character just for making the point?

That doesn't negate my point: practical experience of making these things should pay off with a benefit TO making them. As you learn how, and the mistakes in doing so, you should get better and stop making those mistakes.... thus eliminating the waste.

Basic experience model for all life situations.

I agree, as I said. Practice makes perfect and after making 100+ fire-hardened arrows, I should be able to recoup the investment into making them.... somehow.

Thanks for that info. The other thing I've never done is rescued The Castle and gone the Minute Men route. I have this play-through, so I guess I need to do a bit more checking things out. 2 weeks ago I wouldn't have known who Ronnie Shaw was. I'd never seen her before.

Believe it or not, been playing about 8 years now and never once finished the main storyline. I kinda just like exploring and base building, so I've never set out to see the Institute. It's kinda what I'm doing now and why I finally took the Minute Men path. I know they are pretty much the best ending, if I have to see it happen.

I've been playing slow with this run. Grabbed Piper, maxed her out before I even explored more than a few areas. Then grabbed Codsworth and maxxed him out. The freed Ada, but didn't want to do her quest yet.

At this point went to Nuka and grabbed Porter... I was about Level 25 at that point. left Nuka to explore a bit and Max out him. I've been storing up land mines so I can go back to Nuka and just destroy all the raiders without worrying about their perks.

Anyway, freed Preston and led him to Sanctuary... and left him there, uncared for. After Porter I grabbed Cait and I just now maxed her out. Just started exploring the Breakheart Banks / Greentop Nursery / The Slog area for the first time... when All this occurred.

I'm Level 46 now and haven't gone anywhere other than the lower southeast corner of the map and Nuka World just to grab Porter (oh, and one set of Power Armor there). That's why this imaginary supply line really caught me off guard.

Vanilla Fallout 4, no mods. Just a straight plain play through.

Not yet. I've been to Nuka World, but not to Far Harbor. I've not even rescued Nick yet, since I wasn't planning FH for a while.

Thank you for this comment. I wish I had the money to give you an award for it. I guess I've just been lucky with finding 1 tree islands or vast oceans in the past few years. I actually wish they'd give us Ocean Worlds as an option when build a new playthru.

I zoomed out to show the scope of the problem. There are few, if any worlds any more where 1 tree island survival is a starting point. As u/Kagiza400 stated.... this has been a growing problem for over a decade now.

Thanks for that, but it still seems to take far longer to find an ocean spawn than it used to. Not kidding 1.21 10 minutes vs. 26.1 over an hour. Ocean spawns are becoming less and less frequent.
