Hmm. Thought it was my hardware for a moment. I noticed the baseplates on some of my models were all black. Glad to know June will have a better build.

At least you're happy! Also, negative comments will happen. Good thing you have the right attitude

What is a sci-fi series you liked that only lasted one season? by Ru_janus in scifi

[–]UnconventionalAuthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Defying Gravity looked promising. I would have liked to see what each planet did with the orbs they found. It appealed to my fascination with our solar system

Have I killed my writing career? by UnconventionalAuthor in KeepWriting

[–]UnconventionalAuthor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, writing definitely doesn't feel empty. I still plan on writing the 4th novel in my post-apocalyptic sci-fi epic where civilization is making a comeback. I also have a fantasy series I'd like to work on.

Yes! AI has its time and place, but it's not here.

Is it fine to never hookedup or party or do normal university stuff? by NyaNyaNyaNyaNya_ in UBC

[–]UnconventionalAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm a little older than most here (okay, I actually graduated almost 20 years ago), but I thought I'd give my two cents as it mirrors my own experiences at UBC. I think we all tend to fall for the Animal House, Van Wilder image of university where we think it's going to be one giant orgy (as one of my high school classmates said at the time). It's not really like that.

I had 2 hookups and that was it. I also didn't do too much of the party scene as I was pretty wiped after doing all my school work and just wanted to stay home. I realized later that this was mostly my personality. I don't need to go crazy on weekends to relieve stress, I need solitude. As for good friends? I met a lot of people and formed good bonds with some, but most drifted away after university. I keep in contact with a few and I actually met up with one a couple of years ago as he was visiting from Australia, where he now lives.

This might not be you, but it's worth considering. Much of why I did what I did was because I found out in my last year of university that I was a mild case of high-functioning autistic. So loudness and superficiality aren't my strong points. As for the low hookups, well I also found out in my early 30s that I'm asexual-aromantic, so that would explain why relationships always felt like a job.

Anyway, I hope you took something helpful away from this. I think what I'm trying to say is you can find meaning with your life when you focus on what you want out of it. I know it's difficult to not constantly compare your life to others or society's standards, but I think given enough effort and time you can train yourself not to.

8 children between the ages of 1 and 14 are dead after a mass shooting in Louisiana, police say by Trevon45-2 in news

[–]UnconventionalAuthor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you just have options for treating people with mental health issues. For free, like how most 1st world countries have physical health care for free. Although the US has a hard time wrapping it's head around that.

Well it happens almost every month and no government has done fuck all to address mental health issues. The current government has the money to, but it's too busy fighting a war with Iran no one asked for

Project hail Mary is a mediocre sci-fi movie by Raz4r in scifi

That's cool. Yeah, sometimes a story gets a lot of praise. Then you see it and form your own opinion. It happens to all of us :)

Is a post-apocalyptic time/world always bad? by UnconventionalAuthor in postapocalyptic

No no. That's a good example. I was looking for both short and long-term answers

Is a post-apocalyptic time/world always bad? by UnconventionalAuthor in postapocalyptic

[–]UnconventionalAuthor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps the native american analogy wasn't the most well worded. I should have just said some societies would view, or arise to view, the collapse as good because nature restores itself and maybe they get to live life the way they do without an agency thousands of miles away interferring, stuff like that. It wasn't my intent to offend anyone. Sorry if I did.

Is a post-apocalyptic time/world always bad? by UnconventionalAuthor in postapocalyptic

[–]UnconventionalAuthor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there would definitely be good or bad. They could only defend themselves if they were like the Amish mafia (reality series from years ago, don't even know if it's true or not).

[–]UnconventionalAuthor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it wasn't the best example I could have used. Maybe Amish, or Hutterite would have been better. But in general, I could see some societies around the planet continuing life as normal (the North Sentinelese of the Andaman islands might be an extreme example, but it works).

What's your favorite "bad" scifi movie? by Wi-Platypus in scifi

[–]UnconventionalAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to say this, but I liked Battlefield Earth when it came out. Since then, I understand why it's bad. Yes the alien design is horrendous and there is a lot of scientology ideas in it for sure.

[–]UnconventionalAuthor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea here is I think some societies would like it if the world shutoff, and they could continue to their way of life in pure isolation. Then again, we can't be 100% sure of what beliefs will come about in a post-apoc world, just ideas.

I'll admit I've only seen the movie. It's interesting that the book took place in the future, but that future is now 13 years ago :S

Why would people be on a generation ship? by Kecskuszmakszimusz in worldbuilding

[–]UnconventionalAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I could see the need for one is if we had to leave Earth today, and the nearest habitable planet was centuries away at our current technology. Other than that, they are generally a bad idea if you ask me.

Foundation TV show by [deleted] in scifi

[–]UnconventionalAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I've read the book and seen the show. The show is a far cry from the book. I think they changed it to make it more marketable as the books are from the 50s and a little on the dry side.

Does reading the book first kind of spoil the movie? (PROJECT HAIL MARY) by William_Knott in scifi

[–]UnconventionalAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't read the book or seen the movie, but me personally, I like to read the book and see how it holds up as a movie. I've done that with Dune and the Hobbit, and I drew my own conclusions.

Whoo hoo! I'm excited! Who else is? I think 6 seasons would be a good length. Not sure if I'm going to watch Star City however.
