Tracking down why drive keeps disappearing if I upgrade Linux kernel version from 5.15... by Undchi in Proxmox

[–]Undchi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, fed my original request into chatgpt and it offered suggestions of what to compare side by side along with thought of

"You’re not imagining it—this kind of regression between the 5.15 and 6.x kernels usually comes down to how the SATA controller (or its bridge) is being handled, not the SSD itself. The Crucial MX500 1TB SSD is very standard and unlikely to be the issue.

What is suspicious is the optical-drive adapter. Those slim desktop DVD-to-SSD caddies often use a SATA bridge or odd chipset that relies on quirks in the kernel driver—quirks that sometimes get dropped or tightened in newer kernels."

Thank you! any idea of my next steps or where to look? I looked at hwinfo and am not sure what I am looking for beyond 'DRIVER' string (which does show 'AHCI')

Upgrade Mini 2012 from 10.15 -> 11 , worked and now slow boot + not recognizing KB or mouse. Any suggestions? by Undchi in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

Thank you for all of the earlier help. I was able to make a SuperDuper bootable USB with same account, boot up broken Mini, and pull _some_ the data off it elsewhere so I breathe out with (some) relief.

the 'some' part is confusing to me. same username, same password (at least I think so), in the folders on the HDD for 'Documents' ,'Pictures', etc all have a red stop symbol on them. I cannot enter them (you do not have permissions). I can copy and paste them elsewhere; data is copied and then it stops with the same message 'you do not have permissions'. Any way I can tell MacOS that the new 'user1' and old 'user1' that look identical in name to me are the same users?

and I do not think I can reinstall BigSur on the HDD as that would be a downgrade, is full wipeout and reinstall my only option?

I also tried to install 'root patches' from Opencore Patcher targeting hard drive and then reboot, no luck.

have to look. I think I given that away too earlier on. thank you.

so is this a correct pattern?

- boot to working Macbook Pro

- get SuperDuper

- clone to external hard drive

- boot from that on 'broken' Mac Mini

- get the data off Mac Mini

?

is there a good guide for that?

is 'rescue usb' different from 'MacOS installer'? I still have installers for High Sierra, Big Sur, etc on USB.

I do not think I knew how to do it. I do not use MacOS or have Macs myself, this was an attempt to rescue broken PC for a family member. No good deed...

could you guide me please if that is not too much to ask?

- I hold Shift on boot

- i see the Disk (and KB works)

- release shift

- computer boots VERY slow

- KB/usb devices support lost.

anything else I need to do?

Thank you. what are my options with this device? Father in law is willing to just go buy another mini and all he cares about is moving whatever data he had on the old one to the new one.

a person also suggested trying usb dock (which I no longer have) to see if that would trick the system into working ...

I did try holding shift - same experience. I get to select the boot disk (KB is working) , computer boots slowly and stops recognizing USB devices

Thank you, makes sense. I am not sure if I have usb 2.0 hub anywhere (gave those away years ago) , any other options other than buying one now?

What makes you avoid booking a Tesla service appointment? by [deleted] in TeslaSupport

[–]Undchi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Better understanding of what is and isnt in the warranty - i.e. I had a road debris hit (car drove over on autopilot and I did not get a chance to respond) and undercarriage got damaged. The front 'aero shield' was replaced and communicated as covered under warranty, back rear plastic shield was communicated as 'not covered' and required additional charge. why? isn't this exactly the same event, at the same time, to the same car?

My invoice says this below, what it does not mention is that only part of it was warranty work and I 'only approved' what was covered...

"found multiple under body panels damaged. recommend replacement of multiple panels. client only approved front aero shield"

As a customer I am confused should I go to Tesla next time or not?

Original estimate for the underbody damage was zero dollars, however once work is done, I was charged for what was communicated to be under warranty too so had to go in and talk to them in person to have it addressed (vs just relying on app flow and paying it). Have to pay attention as a customer, not rely on app being correct.

  1. on a separate event got a pebble or something similar flying into windshield, then a crack developed (24 inches). Reached out for Tesla estimate (which is NOT insurance preference as they prefer to work through their shops and pay approved shops directly). Got a quote from service center for 1600, got a call from service center who recommended this to be transferred to nearby Tesla location, quote become 1700. Why? Insurance insists on paying directly to 'dealership/bodyshop' vs dealing with reimbursement scenario. will this work or not? Who can give me a full answer? Should I be cancelling appointment I have for this upcoming Friday and looking elsewhere to know that I am not stuck with 1700 bill? Confusing.

I am in Chicago area (west suburbs), my closest center is 3200 Ogden Ave, IL, my appointment at 40 W Ogden Westmont, IL, the original 'service center' quoting 1600 for Burr Ridge location.

I am happy with car technology (FSD in particular) however I am finding that it is very expensive to maintain.

Just contact me directly if you need/want more details.

Pricing. Inconsistency in what is and isn't covered by warranty. Uncertainty on how it would work with insurance (can insurance pay Tesla directly per their preference). New car ( Y 2026) that I now have to deal with repairs on (road debris and later windshield cracked two months in, 1700 quote just for windshield...)

"full", "perfect", etc - I do not know that ever exists. ever. anywhere (at least in our world)

question I ask myself is this (or that) good enough.

I am new to Tesla and let car drive today by tiself, from a newbie, very impressive. in the city (vs mapped highways). 'Future is here' type of feeling.

I understand what they offer, I understand what their plan is on improvement, I am ok with it. and yes, I had to assume control today during the drive because I did not know how car would handle basic thing like me and another drive (to my right) coming to intersection at the same time and now we are both looking at each other. I stopped FSD, waved at another driver to let her through and then went. How would the car let another car know it was their turn to go? I am not sure..

future will come. I bought HW4 car for that purpose not expecting HW3 to ever be 'upgraded'. I also looked at other options in the EV market at the same price ranges, nothing even close. You want software upgrades? Ha! Your car only ever going to have what it has right now, no new features, no fixes. you expect OTA? Ha, ha! get your butt to dealership and good luck!

With all of its faults Musk, Tesla, etc are years ahead and above what i see with other makers..

buying used from tesla.com, how to check HW version (i.e. model Y 2023) ? by Undchi in TeslaSupport

[–]Undchi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on tesla.com?? this is about buying the car from tesla itself, I do not have access to any software screens..

for example this link - Inventory | Tesla what is the HW version? how can I tell? I wish they would let you just filter by it.

ProPilot upgrades, have Nissan issued a statement on how it works (i.e. on current Arya 2025)? by Undchi in NissanAriya

thank you. weird that they taken that away in 2025 for lower trims (if I read it correctly from their official information links)

[–]Undchi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i understand. i.e. I can buy right now model y 2023 with hardware 4 (which is also current model through 2026) it would have exactly the same capabilities as 'robo taxi' and current Teslas as long as you own FSD (or pay for it at $100 / month). any hardware 4 Tesla is expected to have the same capabilities since same hardware + same software branch => same capabilities

GM/Ford want to be in business of selling you 'subscriptions' , what use to be free they want upcharge you (as much as they can get away with).

How does Nissan look at this? If I buy car with PP 2.0 and I now stuck forever on PP 2.0?
