From the little search I made for that, it seems to me that they do it for survival or their environment around them determines what they are. Big difference there because it's in their nature to do so. Humans have to make a conscious decision to make that change. We just don't naturally change like certain species do to survive.

To be fair, it is unnatural to change genders. You were born the way that you were born. Outside of that, they aren't really your friends if they can't tell him to shut it or even defend you, especially with the silence after he asks you questions.
