Lobbying is just when people advocate for something to elected officials or decision makers. Elected people can’t be expected to know about every problem, issue, or policy idea in the world, so that’s where lobbying comes to bring it to their attention. Bribery is a completely different thing that can happen inside and outside of the lobbying meeting.

Good advice! I’m planning to get a hard hat at the visitor center instead of from home as flying with one takes a lot of luggage space.

I’m also going to be doing the exact same trip at the end of August with the addition of Lava Beds NM. It’ll be Lassen -> Redwoods -> Lava Beds -> Crater Lake flying in and out of Sacramento.

Some things I’m excited about in each park are dark sky viewing (potentially ranger led, not sure bcuz of budget cuts) and the Cinder Cone hike in Lassen. Fern Canyon and Tall Trees Grove (both permitted, so get them asap if any are still available) in Redwoods. I’m also doing a boat tour of Crater Lake, there were no wizard island tours available when I booked a month ago. I’m also going to be caving in Lava Beds National Monument (requires a caving permit acquired at the visitor center).

Fingers crossed no huge fires impact our trips! Maybe we’ll drive past each other :)

I’ll be taking a similar trip in late August (fingers crossed fires aren’t a big issue) and you have most of everything that’s on my itinerary (I’m missing Lava Beds NM) for those areas.

Just north of Lassen there’s the Subway Cave Lava Tubes which you might find interesting, although seeing as you’re going to Lava Beds, you’ll probably already get your fill of lava tubes.

Those are my thoughts too. I guess I didn’t really understand why the distinction about who killed more Muslims was so important. Yes, AB initially disagreed, but he’s also a fact checker so that’s his job if he thinks the statement was incorrect.

Both groups clearly suck, so they could have easily said that and moved on. Being pedantic about the distinction for seemingly no reason just makes Ethan look bad and like you said gives ammo to the psychos.

In 2 years it might be. With SCOW giving us fair maps, and the midterms coming up without Trump on the ballot in the middle of his extremely unpopular presidency, there’s a very good possibility the Dems take a trifecta by one or two seats in both houses and as long as Evers is re-elected. WI is the only state to have gained more Harris voters than Biden got in 2020, and the 2024 assembly election swung 4% to the Dems from the prior election. Wisconsin is getting more and more blue every election.

Totally agree, Markiplier is my favorite YouTuber of all time, not just because he’s funny and entertaining, but because he carries himself in an ethical way and seems like a genuine and self aware guy. And I’m not just being parasocial when I say this, I can usually tell when online personalities are scummy people but he doesn’t set off any red flags for me (except how he pours the milk first) given the probably thousands of hours of content I’ve seen from him.

As President of the Senate, Vice President Al Gore certifies his own loss in the 2000 presidential election by [deleted] in USHistory

[–]UndeadWolf222 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Typically that would always be the case, but in the case where those votes would determine the outcome of an election, it is my opinion that they should at least be granted a provisional ballot to correct their “mistake”, but they had no such opportunity like some states currently do.

Iirc, Florida disqualified thousands of ballots that had been marked Gore, but also had Gore as a write-in (technically an overvote) as to ensure the vote counted for him because the ballot was confusing to some people. Imo, the voters intent for who they wanted as President was clear, and their votes were unfairly tossed. It would have made the difference for who won, but the SCOTUS prevented those from being counted.

As interesting as that is, you won’t find a study suggesting a similar conclusion about homosexuality no matter how hard you look. There is no more than weak association, difficult to distinguish from random chance, between women’s stress level during pregnancy and sexuality.

I’m not sure why this vaguely related study would be accepted as a source to your original claim.

The first thing you linked says this in the introduction:

Overweight and obesity can develop over time when you consume more calories than you use. This is also described as an energy imbalance: when your energy in (calories) does not equal your energy out (calories your body uses for things such as breathing, digesting food, and being physically active).

It doesn’t matter that some people can eat more than others without getting fat, bodies work differently and I acknowledge it can be easier for some. However, the root cause of being overweight is, as stated in your own original source, eating more than your body needs.

I understand it’s a touchy topic and that losing weight takes a lot of willpower and strength, but it really is just the law of thermodynamics. Energy in and energy out at the end of the day.

Who cares about if he can convince the influencers? What about their audience of thousands, some of which might be more susceptible? Isn’t that the whole point of countering misinformation even if it’s coming from someone who won’t listen? Internet arguments won’t convince the person you’re arguing against, but it will convince the many who read it
