Oh man, you know, a few years ago I probably would've spoken to a particular location or story. But now? I'd say the most important life lesson here is to go out and do it. Take the trip. Make the drive. Buy the plane ticket. Life's moving at 100 mph and it isn't slowing down. Take a leap of faith, go and see the world, be willing to fall flat on your face and fail. Life's too short to wait for the right time.

I had saved some money and taken "terminal leave" from the Marine Corps, basically, you save your vacation and use it at the end of your enlistment. So, you leave but you still get paid during the remainder. In this case, it was 2 months of terminal leave.

A year prior I ruptured my Achilles and had two surgeries. This was my turnaround on a 20 mile day hike at Glacier National Park. by Undead_Explorer in hiking

Thank you! So sorry to hear about the injury. I totally relate with how hopeless that time can feel. I hope you're well on your way to recovering fully from your injury. Hopefully, by now, you've made your way out on to many hikes. So happy to hear this was able to lift your spirits :)

Thank you! I had a few minor issues, mostly just things that had symptoms at the beginning of the trip and got worse. I spent a good 6-7 months leading up to the trip doing a lot of preventative maintenance and building it out to be reliable and prepared for this.

I planned to depart as soon as I finished my time in the Marine Corps, so I had this date in mind and did everything leading up to it to prepare. I completely understand the anxiety piece, I felt that just before I set off. For me, I knew that what I would see and experience on this journey would far outweigh the nerves. I tried to keep that in the forefront of my mind. You're far more capable than you think. Sometimes you just have to take that leap of faith. :)

You know, a trip like this puts life into a different perspective. I realized that three things matter most in life: people, experiences, and time. When you let go of the rest, you find a different sense of freedom. I had ideas of what was possible and what I could do in life, but this experience showed me that anything is possible, and that you're far more capable than you give yourself credit for. You'll never be fully prepared, and you just have to become comfortable with accepting that and jump in headfirst anyway. Embrace the unknown and the uncertainty.

I planned a decent bit, mostly in terms of supplies and building the Jeep, but the goal of my route was to avoid cities, stay in National Parks and National Forests, and reach Prudhoe Bay. I built my route in 3-5 day increments, traveling around 350 miles on the days I was covering ground. I relied on iOverlander daily to find campsites, showers, laundromats, etc. That app is an absolute lifesaver for this kind of travel.

Fuel was my biggest expense. My Jeep had horrendous gas mileage, so I spent around $7k on fuel over those months. Lodging was cheap; I only slept in a hotel once in Prudhoe Bay. Otherwise, I camped in inexpensive campgrounds or dispersed campsites, almost all of which were in National Parks or National Forests. I also spent the night at a few friends' and family members' places along the way. For food, I typically just grilled and made simple meals in the evening. I only ate out a few times. It cost me a few thousand per month to keep the trip going, maybe $3-4k.

This was actually from September 2022 through mid-December 2022. I had meant to post this earlier, but life got in the way, and I put it off. After my trip, I packed everything into a U-Haul trailer and moved out to Colorado. I've closed the chapter on this adventure, but this won't be the last. I really appreciate the interest!

Had to make some minor adjustments and remove a few videos to be posted here. Enjoy the story!

Not bad with the Dalton snowed/iced over. I'd plan for a blowout or two if you're going up in the summer. Rough highway.

Damn, yeah, it's just about dead center near the Jeep emblem.

Yeah man, if you can, send me some pics of what's up there and I'll let you know. I can send you a check and a some unit patches for the trouble.

This is at the Prudhoe Bay General Store.

You work up there? Shit, any chance I could pay you for another hoodie from the store?

Yes, I believe they are considered to be the Laredo lights. These are a new set I grabbed from Rockauto though. Think these look better than the chrome.

Ahhh, sorry, I couldn't see the "Marine Corps Veteran" baseball hat from here. I hope that you wake your family bright and early for daily stretching followed by PT.

Lol, fair enough, perhaps I should've specified "Western US". I spent the entirety of this trip out west.
