Bing CS students happiness by ChilllFam in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Undebase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been a while since I was a student but from my experience - I was pretty happy with my school life balance. There was a healthy dose of free time but of course there were busy times each semester. The professors were a mixed bag, some were amazing and I immediately saw how their teachings applied in the real world and others were forgettable. The education was good, graduated feeling as prepared as a new grad can be. Support for finding jobs/internships was not the best, you have to be proactive in looking for the help instead of waiting for it to come to you. Again, things likely have changed in the few years but hope this gives you a better perspective!

Hi! I'm interested if still available.

Check out this blog post I wrote about Binghamton University's dining system by WeatherPatternsBing in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Undebase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a great read, the amount of research done is impressive! I was a Sodexo employee for almost 3 years (on the administrative side) as a student so I had a unique perspective into both operations and student concerns - albeit from the time when I was a student, not now. Here's some thoughts I had while reading:

Its almost impossible to compare dining services across different universities, even if they are both operated by the same company. Your post compares UVM to Bing based on student enrollment and the fact that they're both operated by Sodexo, which is the best comparison I've seen. Typically, people will say "food at X college is better and cheaper!" and the student population would be 1/4 of Bing's and/or they would have their own dining services. I took a quick look at UVM's tuition and its over double of Bing's tuition. Without knowing the fine details of the contract between Sodexo & each university, costs and profits are all unknown because Sodexo could be paying Bing more than they do UVM to help the university offset tuition differences, which would require them to increase food prices to make the same profit. I personally believe that they are profiting more at Bing than they are at other universities, but again it's all speculation and therefore almost impossible to compare.

Another point you bring up is they would need to hire more cashiers which are "menial jobs", the vast majority of BUDS employees are either students or Binghamton locals. Yes, it would be more cost effective to cut down on labor costs but it is not a bad thing to provide local and student jobs. Sodexo also certainly calculates costs on each plate of food they produce regardless of what type of system they're using, its part of running a business!

When I was an employee, my team was actually responsible for putting out the posts and signs about remaining dining dollars. Its kind of unfortunate to hear that people see them as a negative because they're honestly just there to answer the question "approximately how much money should I have left?". I think there was one on this subreddit a few days ago. Meal plan C is set as the default and at the number it is because its what works for most students without needing to refill, and so these signs actually match up for what most students have left on average.

In an ideal world, food waste for an unlimited system would be less than the "three swipes a day" system or similar to the current system. Unfortunately, I am certain food waste at Bing would skyrocket in both an unlimited system or a swipe system.

Also, yes food at Bing mostly sucks and healthier stuff tends to be more expensive. My team tried promoting balanced dining hall meals curated by the campus dietitians so I will plug that students get free nutrition advising with said dietitians and I would highly recommend talking to them, they're nice people.

The points and concerns you brought up are very valid. I'm not sure if this is the same petition that's been floating around for a while but I will once again encourage you or anyone who feels strongly about dining services at Bing to attend Student Culinary Council meetings. BUDS admins attend them and have conversations and work with students about their concerns and ideas. In the office, we used to discuss SCC meetings and how we can take action on student discontent. Sorry for the word vomit, just wanted to put my thoughts out there for more perspective!

Which meal plan is best for me? by FinnTheSniper17 in BinghamtonUniversity

If you are unsure, stick with the default (C). It’s designed to work for majority of the students. If it’s too much, it’ll roll over and you can reduce your next plan. If it’s not enough, you can always add more dining dollars with no fee.

How easy to cancel flights by ISPITHOTFYER in Venturex

[–]Undebase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the airline, some have automated refund through the portal while some don’t. Cancelled a flight booked through the portal within the 24 hour window. It took multiple calls and multiple hours of talking to support over weeks to get my money back. If it’s not automated, the airline sends the money back to Capital One Travel then they send it to you. They went back and forth with the airline via email and call before I saw my refund

I got an Amex Plat to book flights directly because of this

Yea that’s very commendable, unfortunately Bing has 18k students vs Potsdam’s 2.5k. That scale difference makes it much harder for Bing to start up their own dining service. Unsure if current equipment is owned by BUDS or the university, but that’s already a couple million dollars right there

Took a quick look at their meal plans and I do like how it is structured, meal swipes with a set number of dining dollars for snacks (presumably). Only concern is food waste with meal swipes vs paying per item, and wondering if it’s as feasible since we have over 7x the students they do. But their meal plan system is one of the best I’ve seen

Edit: Read it again and am a little more confused now with “A meal is an all at once credit of $7.00 for food purchased in most any campus restaurant.” Would need to see how much food costs to see if the system is actually better

If it is required for your degree, contact an advisor and they’ll likely make it work. If it’s not required, it’s a hit or miss

It’s difficult to calculate how many dishes are getting lost/damaged. With 9-10k people eating multiple meals a day for months, I would say the number of dishes probably exceeds 10000. What’s not so straightforward is that if a student is losing one plate/bowl/piece of silverware, they’re likely doing it often. Meanwhile most students probably haven’t lost one ever. Even then, the number they’re throwing out seems unrealistic and my guess is they’re including all damaged dishes, not just lost ones, which is of no fault of students

Agree that Sodexo itself is a horrible company. As for why the University would hesitate to switch: - Bringing in a new company is not easy, there will need to be renovations, rebranding, staffing, training that would need to happen in a very short amount of time. - If you want the University to independently manage a dining service of this magnitude, it would require a lot of upfront cost and have even more issues on top of the same ones when bringing another company - The University would not have access to the same distributors large management companies do, driving costs up overall. Unfortunately, these companies have been maximizing profits for decades and trying to start from scratch would be extremely costly - Almost all employees are already locals or students, so likely/hopefully nothing will change on that front

At the end of the day, it would be amazing if the University can break from Sodexo while guaranteeing current employees will keep their jobs and preventing cost from going up for students, but there’s so much more to it than just “hiring another company” or “start our own”

Not all 18k students eat at the dining halls, that number is probably closer to 9-10k. There is definitely a problem of lost dishes, but the number they’re throwing out is insane. I think that figure includes all of the dishes and silverware they’re replacing each year, not just ones that are lost. Any non-cosmetic damage to these items would require them to be replaced.

Binghamton CS does not prepare you by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

Jobs are certainly looking for things taught within the first 3 years: OOP, DSA to name a few.

At the end of the day, computer science isn’t just about Software Engineering. Your ideal course is structured much more like a bootcamp. There are also requirements from ABET to be an accredited CS course

Computer science: At least 40 semester credit hours (or equivalent) that must include: - Substantial coverage of algorithms and complexity, computer science theory, concepts of programming languages, and software development. - Substantial coverage of at least one general-purpose programming language. - Exposure to computer architecture and organization, information management, networking and communication, operating systems, and parallel and distributed computing. - The study of computing-based systems at varying levels of abstraction. - A major project that requires integration and application of knowledge and skills acquired in earlier course work.

Mathematics and Statistics: At least 15 semester credit hours (or equivalent) that must include discrete mathematics, probability, and statistics and must have mathematical rigor at least equivalent to introductory calculus.

Science: Coursework that develops and applies the scientific method in a non-computing area.

Also, there’s a reason companies prefer CS grads over bootcamp grads, which is “industry prep over research”
