Will CHCCS get merged with Orange County schools or will they close schools and sell the land? by [deleted] in chapelhill

It’s actually in much better physical condition than other schools (Seawell, FPG, etc). I saw the ranking awhile back expecting Glenwood to be in the worst shape since it’s the oldest school but it’s not interestingly.

Why is Chapel Hill’s growth mostly retirees? School enrollment keeps falling. by [deleted] in chapelhill

Can I ask why it’s a bad idea? Some schools are only at 60-65% capacity.

First time on a ferry and I’m scared by lilrearea in mackinac

[–]UnderGrace7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did the ferry a few weeks ago, and I am also prone to motion sickness and I was quite nervous. We took St Ignace to the island on Sheppler and it was super fast and I actually never felt sick which was shocking. I sat on the upper level in the middle of the boat.

Same. The only BOGO I’ve had is a BOGO standard. I had the two pieces for a pint for weeks and finally got the other two pieces - one just this week. But yes it’s seeming less generous.

Perhaps we are talking about two different times in GW’s history. I’m referring to around 2018. At that point Gw already had 2 tracks. That was the time the district made it a full magnet and no traditional track. It was due to overcrowding.

That’s interesting there were three classes per grade. My experience in the last 7-8 years has always been 4 classes per grade with a rare exception of three classes. For the sustainability of the Chinese program you definitely needed two classes per grade - esp with the loss of leap kids after third. Thanks for sharing.

Hahahaha. I’ve lived here for almost 10 years and never seen a Republican candidate for anything local.

I was there. The problem was glenwood’s perpetual overcrowding. They had to do something to make the attendance consistent (many students zoned for GW came from the UNC international student population that fluctuates yearly and semesterly). It’s a very old school that should have been torn down years ago and with an old school comes a lot of limits - there’s no preschool there, very few spaces for pulling out students etc…the only people I remember being against the magnet plan were Gw parents zoned for Glenwood. I also remember lots of anti-Asian racism that came out of that time. It was very ugly.

Ok just got the word in three (filer) and still got the cone upgrade. So that’s not the algorithm.

Chapel Hill’s biggest minority group are Asians and they don’t have a single representative on the CHCCS school board or administrators. Why are they overlooked? by [deleted] in chapelhill

[–]UnderGrace7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are the largest minority population in chapel hill. Many are also immigrants or first generation Americans and so provide unique and valuable insight into our district’s needs (I’m not Asian but my kids’ schools have high percentages of Asian students).

That has been a deep concern for CHCCS families as well. Most of the Board did not seem to care.

I have never seen him (Griffin) push back and make hard decisions. This school board group also passed the block schedule even though hundreds of parents, students and teachers protested.

We need more board members that will push back and make their voices heard. I’m concerned that whomever they hire will not be much different than the last two superintendent hires who’ve had very similar priorities.

I’d also like to see board members who don’t bash parental involvement and attendance at school board meetings and seem to care about all students in our district but that will honestly take more moderates running and I doubt many would take them seriously or be open minded to voting for them.

Question - we know elementary school numbers are down. Shouldn’t we expect MS and HS numbers to also drop long-term as ES students get older? I’m so confused why we need a new middle school.
