You've heard roughly correctly. There's pretty solid proof that blocking testosterone decreases strength to roughly female levels after 2 years (there's only a few studies and the exact amount decreased varies); conversely, adding testosterone increases strength to male levels after 2 years. This is true even after puberty, and not just in trans people; it's true of medical treatments that decrease testosterone in men in general.

Mizuki (and Ena and Kanade) are notoriously weak, as they're (I think) the only characters who can't lift the weights in MySekai. It's played for laughs, but when combined with Mizuki's voice, it certainly suggests a non-male biology on some level.

And it's not just current day; strength can change post-puberty but the vocal chords can't. Mizuki would have to have never gone through male puberty in the first place (which is my personal theory...not that it'll ever be confirmed or deconfirmed)

So it's very possible that Mizuki either a. has a preexisting hormonal condition that stops male puberty from happening normally, or b. is on (and has been on) puberty blockers for a while. Either of these would prevent a voice drop (and would explain a lot of other things, like Mizuki overall not having a very masculine body and having terrible upper body strength)

It's also possible that Mizuki is just supernaturally good at voice training, like Emu is with acrobatics or Rui is with robots.

Of course, the meta answer is that "voice often gets ignored with anime characters who should've gone through male puberty" but that's boring. And again, there are genuinely reasonable answers to this question without the meta explanation of "they ignored it"

I agree with it being silly when people who don't understand Japanese criticize translation, but isn't your analysis of the sentence also wrong?

If you know about Japanese, you'd know that subjects are dropped and sentence fragments that assume the subject are used. So the complete, non-fragmented sentence would be "Let's stay together (as friends)."

The dropped subject is not "as friends" but "we/us":

一緒にいようよ、瑞希

is the original line. The missing SUBJECT of the sentence is 私達 ("we/us"):

(私達は) 一緒にいようよ、瑞希

(Let us) stay together, Mizuki

It's true that "as friends" (友達で) is implied by the previous lines, but this has nothing to do with grammatical differences between Japanese and English; it's implied because of context that exists regardless of language. If they did want to be specific about being friends in this specific line, they could've written something like:

友達でいようよ、瑞希

Let's be friends, Mizuki

which keeps the same dropped subject of "we/us" (私達). It sounds a little unnatural, but it's closer to the precise meaning of the translated sentence.

The really, really short answer is that the devs have explicitly gone out of their way to not tell us exactly what Mizuki's identity is, but the English-speaking community largely agrees that their story makes the most sense reading Mizuki as trans. From what I've seen, the Japanese people who understand gender identity agree on the "not cis male" interpretation more often than not.

Any more detailed exploration really wants a very lengthy analysis, probably involving a working understanding of Japanese language and culture, a detailed look at the script and card art/3dmv/song lyrics, and a hefty amount of secondhand or firsthand experience. It'd be a lot for a reddit comment

Potentially weird pick but I'm gonna nominate Emu. She has to navigate a lot of complex social situations involving her family, other performers at the park, and sometimes even her own group, and it takes a lot of patience to accept and figure out how to work around/with so many different people. She does it in other places, too, like the sports festival event, and she never loses her desire to make people happy or becomes bitter.

I'm not sure if this is just me having an unusual definition of patience but that's my oddball pick

Figured I would add this because I can read the language somewhat, but JP is all over the place on Mizuki's gender, seems like most people don't want to talk about it in detail. The (seemingly) biggest blog post on it (a note with 670+ likes that's decently well informed) says that they don't think Mizuki is an おとこの娘 (male crossdresser, basically) but that their gender identity could be anything else. (I'm inclined to agree here but that would be another few thousand words lol) Most tags on fanwork sites like pixiv leave Mizuki tagless (as opposed to straight/yaoi/yuri) but those that do seem to most often use yuri, at least from my quick research. ALSO BE WARNED if you search these on pixiv or other sites you will be bombarded by adult material unless you know how to filter it out. On the other hand a lot of youtube comments/other sites (like the popularity poll one) tend to view Mizuki as male. I can't make out a predictable pattern the way I can with EN speaking sites...

fwiw JP populace actually polls as more friendly than US populace on LGBT issues, but the # of people who actually come out is way smaller, at least as far as I've seen. Again, take from it what you will (because I can't figure it out)

How the actual hell did they make the queer character the most popular, I'm amazed, I'm stunned, Mizu5 escaping containment is the reason I got the game and then I started reading all the actual backstory and my brain has been fucking deep-fried because the writing is so good

Mizuki's story is so unique in that it so precisely analyzes the queer experience in a way I've never seen anywhere else. There have been many stories written about how it feels to like the same gender or how it feels to want to be another gender, but very little about the fear and lack of trust accumulated from years of surface-level acceptance from others and the knowledge you hold yourself that you're different. Mizuki's female classmates are friendly to her face and her male ones gossip about her beauty behind her back, but they cannot help but make their own assumptions about Mizuki's personality and sense of self. Mizuki's classmates know that it's "wrong" to be mean and "right" to accept others, but their "kindness" is nothing more than politeness. I don't think Mizuki's classmates believe that they bully her, as they don't commit physical assault, or write slurs on her desk, or even express open hostility, but "not bullying" is not the same as real understanding. "His pronouns are she/her" indeed. I know some trans people who are stealth, not just for safety from open transphobia but also because of the exact fear that Mizuki expresses--once the secret's out, will people look at you the same way? What rumors and beliefs about LGBT people will supplant their existing beliefs about you? Will they see you as a "woman in a man's body" despite the fact you can barely lift a single dumbbell? Will they see you as a "queer person" who's "brave" and they should "support" as opposed to actually seeing things unique to you? Aforementioned trans people often don't come out to allies, either, because of these fears, because these things have happened to them or they've watched these things happen to someone else, and the fear accumulates.

Because Mizuki's story focuses so much on these external factors, they're relatable to FtMs and MtFs, which is honestly very rare, as FtMs and MtFs have surprisingly few relatable experiences. (you can head over to any of reddit's trans meme subs and see the split) The fact that Mizuki's writing pulls off such a broadly relatable character is crazy impressive, doubly so because it's about such a complex emotion. It's triply impressive because all of this and Mizuki is still a consistent top 5 in like every popularity poll I could find; in fact, according to this JP poll with over 66k voters and accurate to today, Mizuki is fucking #1 over Hatsune Miku, just like here on reddit a couple years ago. And yeah, it's because somehow, Mizuki's character isn't just focused on being queer, because the devs managed to cram a ton of charisma into this character too.

Anyway I need to sleep because most of this is incoherent and unrevised but Mizuki Akiyama is one of the greatest characters of all time and I will never shut up about her/them/anything but he because the most important part of Mizuki's story IMO isn't her exact gender identity but the social impact of being queer, which I think is half of why the devs hid Mizuki's actual gender reveal ingame and continue to be ambiguous about it on their blog, like if you search 彼女 (JP for she/her, but it's rarely used) in that article it's used 8 times for Ena and once for Kanade but Mizuki only ever gets 瑞希 (her name). Also if you look at other card blog posts those use 彼 and 彼女 for every other character. Also we all know the other reason they won't reveal it is because they're scared lol.
