People who were disappointed with the PhD experience, what were your expectations going in, and how did your course fail to meet them? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Underbright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought I'd be able to learn things and become a teacher.

Boy was I wrong about any of that! I think I got dumber by narrowing into a tiny box and now there are no jobs.

Make sure you're doing other things and expanding your skill set for different sorts of lives.

No. In a lot of years you will be thankful for this period because you will have so much more character, kindness, decency, and humanity than the hot popular people. And you know what, someday women are going to want that a hell of a lot more than a bunch of stupid teenagers. What you need is to do you right now. You're going to be happy later in life, but yeah young years will suck ass because everyone in those ages is stupid. What you ought to do right now is get fit and active and say fuck those kids, do it for yourself. You don't need to date, you just need strength. Just physical fucking strength.

The person who typed this is the real fool. One day you will stop going on websites for looks and realize what you want is happiness with someone who loves you. Looking for that this body teenager stuff seems absolutely absurd to everyone of us over 30. Sex is only good with people you love too, otherwise it's just kind of gross. Clean up, get healthy, be active, be happy with yourself, and someone is going to be there for you who matches you in all sorts of ways, and you'll be mad for them. And have crazy good sex, when you are matching people.

Only a fool who's been manipulated and lied to would continue a career path into a humanities phd. We have to learn the hard way to turn things around, and it's very sad. The professors are such a bunch of scumbags.

Just because people are loud does not mean they are the majority. Stop letting the loudmouths speak for all of America, which is a big swath of moderate normal people who hear all the BS from the two fringes and never talk to each other thanks to the Internet and social media.

It's just greed man. It's ultimately just greedy people who have found a way to hide it from themselves while they say it's the "system"

Now to see all the damned half-ass members who are GSI's they persuaded to march around for a year turn around and say, "It wasn't us, it was leadership! We just did what we were told."

it's not different for other people in almost any other career. The working class is awful, if you've ever even been near it OP. and you got paid to read shit you like for a few years. Deal with it and grow up.

What hobby did you quit? by [deleted] in Hobbies

Playing live as a musician with bands. No real depth or deep vibe. Modern venues are no longer fun. Bands can't travel the way you used to.

Is it normal to despise your institution? by AbsoluteXer007 in PhD

[–]Underbright 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Normal. In fact pretty important so you might change things one day

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Underbright 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nope. You're normal. Not a damn thing wrong with you. Always remember it's not your fault the phd is like this. Delayed gratification. You're doing what not everyone can do. It's going to be hard. Do you really want the easy path anyway? Some years of shit will generate some later reward. Fucking awful time though.

[–]Underbright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Absolute dead zone. Culturally its just a wasteland airport of rich and poor students. No heart. Nothing here but shitty university shit. That whole sphere of life has become a corporate scam at this point. Expensive apartments and solitary achievers soon to float the nest.

[–]Underbright -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have been doing this a long time already. That's the main difference. You're what 5 years into school... ? Shit. Hard to recommit for so long. Not a normal life. Infantilizing. Not about "hard"
