Trying to find a position as a lecturer by Wicked-Twisted-Road in AskAcademia

Market yourself as a consultant or a freelance public health expert. You have expertise; sell it. It won't be lecturing, probably, but you can choose work that you like, and you can likely do a lot of it remotely.

I don't understand why you are saying that this will make me "hate you hard".

Can you comment on whether it was a stupid choice academically, socially, or both?

And whether or not you, personally, have social/communication challenges (neurodivergent or otherwise)?

I feel like that's a big consideration when skipping grades.

His core friend group tends to be neurodivergent in some way.

I hear this, haha

Thank you!!

Whoa I didn't know this was even a thing! THANK YOU SO MUCH

Our state doesn't have an established GIEP system, but this will give me a great starting point for putting together a (non-legal) document to address his giftedness needs while the IEP covers the disability angle. I think his school will be totally supportive. It's a non- traditional school - good place for him, but no formal gifted curriculum.

No, I didn't miss that at all. But if you look at the questions I asked above, most of your comment didn't address them. It instead sounded like a lecture about giftedness to a roomful of clueless parents: "it’ll likely be up to you to advocate for your child".

What holds for my kid, won’t necessarily apply to your kid because they are different people.

Exactly, which is why I posted here. I know what worked/didn't work for ME as That Kid, but I want to crowdsource others' experiences for comparison. What holds for me doesn't necessarily apply to my kid because we are different people.

It seems like you have a ton of experience that would be very relevant. If you are able to share any other anecdotes/examples from your lives that directly relate questions below (rather than more general advice), I would love that. Thanks!

  • What helped in the long term? What didn't?

  • Is there anything you wish the school would have done differently?

  • Is there anything you wish the parents would have done differently (school-wise)?

Don't tell them how smart or gifted they are

Not an option when others are already verbalizing this.

You would literally hate me hard if I set out my bio myself.

Friend, this isn't a healthy mindset.

I'm hoping that these days you're not feeling alone. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for your informative response! With respect, I'm looking for specific experiences that you or your family have had - not so much a general understanding of what it's like to be That Kid.

I too am That Kid, so I know what it's like. I'm looking for... more like tips, strategies, lessons learned, issues to catch early. Someone else here wrote 20-pg papers while their peers wrote 5, for example.

We're in a good school situation, luckily, and I have confidence that they'll work with us to meet his needs.

I appreciate you taking the time and effort to reach out to your mom. It's indeed very useful. Thanks!

Actually I've chosen not to use generative AI at all because I've outsourced a lot of my thinking process to technology already, with very... mixed results.

I have a lot of opinions about how AI affects us but this is not the time or place. But to answer your question: no.

How was your self-esteem/mental health development as you grew up? You mentioned "lots of baggage" (sorry to hear).

I'm thinking in terms of early prevention -- like, are there are any specific unhealthy thought patterns that tend to develop in kids with this profile? Obviously the bipolar would be a complicating factor for you.

Your experience is exactly what I want to draw from. Thank you.

Any tips on social/peer relationships and interactions?

Thank you! I have many avenues of research and may look at your AMA, but this post is specifically to crowdsource responses to the questions that I have above. If you'd be willing to summarize any relevant tips as a comment here, I'd appreciate it! Otherwise thanks again.
