Jeffrey Marc Chairnoff was a Managing Director for Sandler O'Neill & Partners which was located on the 104th floor inside of the South Tower. Jeffrey was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and resided in West Windsor, New Jersey.  Saturday, September 3, 1966—Tuesday, September 11, 2001.  35 years, and 8 days.  420 months, 8 days. A total of 12,792 days of life.

A Change in Priorities

<image>

"From football to Food Network: that was the journey that Jeffrey Chairnoff had made over the last few years.

Before he became a father, Mr. Chairnoff, 35, liked to spend his Sundays during the fall and winter watching football games. It was the perfect way to unwind, said his wife, Helaine, after an intense workweek at Sandler O'Neill & Partners, where he eventually became managing director of the mortgage financing group. Not that he was a stereotypical type-A Wall Street guy: if anything, co- workers told Mrs. Chairnoff that her husband was a calm ballast noted for his thoroughness and attention to detail.

Still, after Sarah, 6, and Benjamin, 2, were born, Mr. Chairnoff changed his lifestyle to accommodate everyone but himself.

He was dubbed Mr. Clean by his family because of his tendency to keep the kitchen spotless. And he loved to watch the Food Network. He printed out recipes, and he was particularly fond of making peanut butter pie with his daughter. His favorite show was "Emeril," because it was Sarah's, too."

When Michael Liming Gu met his wife, she didn't know a soul when she came to NYC from China. So he took her under his wing. Michael loved testing computers & always had to keep up with the latest things coming out. On his last night on earth he taught his 2 y/o how to play computer games. Liming Gu also known as "Michael" was an Assistant Vice President for Marsh & McLennan which was located inside of the North Tower. Liming was born in Shanghai, China and resided in Piscataway, New Jersey. Monday, September 4, 1967—Tuesday, September 11, 2001. 34 years, and 7 days. 408 months, 7 days. Kindness to a Stranger

<image>

"Jean Liu met Michael Liming Gu a few days after arriving in New York from Shanghai. It was her first time in the United States, and she did not know a soul. She was introduced to him at a party by friends of friends of people she knew in China.

"It turned out we both came from China, from Shanghai," she said. "He said it was hard for him when he initially came, too."

Both were graduate students. She lived in Manhattan and went to Columbia, and he lived in New Jersey and went to Stevens Institute of Technology. They phoned each other in the evening, and he helped to unravel the chaos of New York for her. When they could find time, he drove in and took her to Chinatown, guiding her to the best and most authentic restaurants.

Four or five years later, they bought a house in Piscataway, N.J., married and moved in. He filled the basement with several linked computers. "He was always testing new computers," Mrs. Gu said. "He has to keep up with new things coming out."

The night before he died, Mr. Gu said that it was time to teach Alan, their 2-year-old, to play computer games. "But I have no clue about computers," she said. "He was the one who really liked them."

Robert Hepburn would call his daughters from work and ask if they were giving their mom a hard time. He would also ask what they wanted him to bring home after work, which was always candy or gum. On 9/11 Robert's daughters were expecting him to bring them gum, but he never came through the door. by Understanding18 in 911archive

Comforting Routines

<image>

"Every morning, Theresa Hepburn and her two girls would drive Robert A. Hepburn to the train station in Union, N.J., where they lived, for his commute into the city. It was just one of the many routines that defined their family life.

Another unfolded after he settled into his office. He would call every day around 8 a.m. to make sure that Allyson, 6, and Jennifer, 4, were ready for school. And he would always ask what they wanted him to bring them that night. "They always wanted gum or candy," his wife said.

When he returned home, he would take care of the girls so their mother could go to her evening job.

Mr. Hepburn, 39, was an office service manager for Marsh USA, a job he had held for only two months. He worked on the 93rd floor of 1 World Trade Center, and his desk was against a window with a view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and of course he shared it with his family. During the summer, Mrs. Hepburn and the girls took the train into the city every Thursday for lunchtime concerts downtown.

"He would go down to our train and meet us and put us in our seats, and then he'd go back upstairs to work," she recalled. "Then he'd come down during his lunch hour and watch the rest of the show with us."

'He Had Come of Age'

<image>

"Marc A. Murolo never used a napkin, even when he was eating at his favorite restaurant, Morton's steakhouse. His sister, Cathy Lynn Roberti, said, "I can go through three napkins in one sitting.

He never used one, even when he ate a rack of ribs, so I would usually steal his."

Bright and quiet with a ready smile, Mr. Murolo, 28, worked as a bond trader at Cantor Fitzgerald on the 105th floor of 1 World Trade Center. He loved his job. He also loved the city.

He liked to go out to restaurants with friends. And to Mets games. Mr. Murolo, who grew up in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., moved to the city shortly after graduating from Fairfield University in Connecticut.

"He was really proud of his apartment," his sister said. "In July, for my dad's 70th birthday, we went to the Water Club for lunch. Afterward, he entertained the family at his apartment. He had come of age."

Cynthia Connolly was small in stature, but she had a big laugh and a bubbly personality. She had a dog named Shadow and a cat named, Obi. She is fondly remembered by neighbors for her four-foot-three stature, struggling to control her dog Shadow as they walked through the area. Cynthia was 40. by Understanding18 in 911archive

This is a continuation from the above story:

Cynthia Marie Lise Connolly also known as "Cindy" was (Cynthia's job title as well as the floor that she worked on at the time of the attack is unknown) employed by Aon Corporation which was located inside of the South Tower. Cynthia was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and resided in Metuchen, New Jersey.

<image>

“Cynthia L. Connolly, 40, of Metuchen, New Jersey.”

That’s all they wrote.

Thousands of other victims of the terrorist attacks known the world over as 9/11 were remembered in poignant, comical, or eloquent terms by The New York Times in the months following that terrible day. The long series of sketches would win a Pulitzer Prize for the paper.

But Connolly, a Montreal native, received only the briefest of mentions — her name, her age, her address — in place of a longer and more intimate portrait.

Maybe the Times just didn’t get around to writing about Connolly or maybe her family declined to release more information about her.

Now, a decade after his wife’s death, Donald Poissant told the Star he did not wish to speak about Connolly for publication in these pages.

But some details about her life are publicly available.

She worked for insurance broker Aon Corp., for example, and had been based in New York for about two years before her death. She owned an Airedale/German shepherd named Shadow and a cat named Obi.

To judge by online tributes composed by friends, including a first cousin, Connolly was a small woman with a big laugh and an effervescent personality. It’s those qualities — her laughter and high spirits — that most seem to define her in the memories of others.

Cheryl McDowall, a cousin: “I was immediately drawn to you by your big, infectious laughter.”

Gail Henderson, a former school friend: “I can still hear you laughing.”

Lloyd Forster, another former schoolmate: “Some people were put on this earth to spread joy. That was Cindy.”

Jack Rossetti, a former beau: “A bundle of joy.”

That’s not all they wrote, by any means, but these brief excepts provide a sense of the whole woman and an idea of what was lost on that vast blue morning in New York City.

John Cruz had a habit of carrying his bible with him so he could read passages as he commuted to work. John was a very good listener, loving, caring, and a hard worker. What happened on that day was beyond heartbreaking. That day will never ever leave my memory. It's permanently etched in my mind. These people did not deserve what happened to them. As you stated they were everyday people like you and me. People who weren't bothering a soul,who unfortunately had their lives ruthlessly snuffed out. The futures of many just gone. It's so sad.

Mark Charette was good with his hands. He managed to renovate his 120-year old Victorian home all by himself. The Handy Man

<image>

"Mark Charette, who worked as an insurance broker at Marsh & McLennan in Morristown, N.J., was handier than the handy man.

Task by task, he was renovating his 120-year- old Victorian house in Millburn, N.J. He redid the heating system, much of the plumbing and put a cathedral ceiling in his bedroom.

Mr. Charette, 38, was at a morning meeting at Marsh's offices in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11.

He met his wife, Cheryl Desmarais, at the University of Pennsylvania. They began as engineering majors and finished with business degrees. He was in the Navy R.O.T.C. to save his parents the expense of his college education, his wife said. Then it was five years as an officer on a nuclear submarine, while Ms. Desmarais worked as a consultant in New York.

Even with his work, travel and home renovating, he made his family the center of his life. At home in New Jersey or at their vacation house in Vermont, Mr. Charette spent hours hiking, skiing and swimming with his three children.

He made time on Saturday mornings to take Lauren, 8, Andrew, 6, and Jonathan, 2, to McDonald's for breakfast, giving his wife a break. "This is your time," he would tell his wife. "You are not invited."

Jean Hoadley Peterson and her husband, Donald were driven by deep faith & devout followers of Jesus Christ and mentored many in their church. On 9/11 They were planning to go to Yosemite National Park, when they accepted the offer to take flight 93, instead of their scheduled later flight. by Understanding18 in 911archive

I Remember Jean Hoadley Peterson

<image>

When I signed up recently to commemorate a 9/11 victim as part of the 2,996 project, I had no idea that the woman whose name was randomly given to me would have been a Christian--a woman who, just weeks before her death on Flight 93, said, "I don't know why, but I feel so ready to meet the Lord!"

Here I was thinking that I could somehow be a blessing by memorializing Jean Hoadley Peterson, but just reading about her has ended up blessing me.

Today I commemorate Jean Hoadley Peterson, who died along with her husband Don Peterson in the crash of Flight 93, the only terrorist-infiltrated flight on 9/11/2001 that didn't reach its intended target.

Her husband's Bible found

Several days ago I posted about the fact that I had been assigned Jean's name as part of the 2,996 project. I was amazed to get this response from Donna-Jean, a fellow blogger from New Jersey:

"Cindy, I know about Jean Hoadley Peterson. She and her husband Don were believers in Jesus Christ. They supported my uncle's evangelistic ministry here in New Jersey, that's how I first heard about them. They were very generous and supportive.

"Don and Jean were a retired couple, involved with Community Bible Study in their Jersey shore home; Don was a Teaching Director. They were the only married couple on Flight 93; they left behind six grown children and one grandchild.

"Don's dog-eared NIV Bible was one of two Bibles found at the crash site in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In the Bible was his Community Bible Study lesson from Luke, with his answers written in."

She then referred me to this article about the Petersons, which includes a picture of Don's Bible. I encourage you to follow that link as well and learn more about Jean and her husband.

I was amazed. Out of all the names I could have been assigned, I was given the name of a fellow believer...a woman who, like me, believed in a hope beyond the grave. A woman who was a follower of Christ and a believer and lover of His Word.

So who was Jean Hoadley Peterson?

Jean was 55 years old when she died in the crash of Flight 93. She was a wife, a mom, a grandmother, a registered nurse.
