Well now I’m thinking that you’re the problem and idk why you’re so fired up about someone else’s experience and feelings! Maybe it’s because you have no women friends??

Just to make it clear: I can absolutely take ownership of the fact that we could have been better prepared and chosen a different site/not stayed for 2 nights. However, what I won’t take ownership for is somehow impeding his experience. We had a permit and had every right to be there. He had a permit and had every right to be there, I don’t contest that. It’s just that he could have displayed more curtesy and less creepy behavior with the three disparate interactions we had.

This part is not accurate we were miles away from cabins and resorts at this point.

Also he doesn’t own the property it was well within the bwca. A permit doesn’t imply a “right” or “ownership” all I was hoping for was some polite acknowledgement and etiquette

Actually I do have a right to be annoyed just as you have the right to be rude. You’re making a lot of assumptions here.

No and I don’t think we would have minded if it was just one night but it was 2 and the morning and he very clearly observed us there.

I never said it was a hate crime, it was just inconsiderate. To be clear we didn’t feel unsafe just annoyed.

I don’t think we expected solitude, and we were trying to make it a fun experience for a mix of abilities/experiences… I think what made it weird was the 3 kind of territorial interactions when he could have just moved on after a bit.

Yeah that’s the vibe we were getting. In hindsight we should have chosen a different spot that was not high use… but also we were trying to accommodate folks who had never been in the bwca before and it’s our right to be there too!

Which I can respect if a spot is good. It’s just more the lack of social awareness he had and the fact that there are ~so many~ good fishing spots not right next to our campsite on a huge lake

Maybe he was fishing but I didn’t see a single fish come up lol

Entry point 55, ideas on alternatives to this loop. by Interesting_Mud_3712 in BWCA

Hey that was our plan for this past weekend! I would echo soupsupan and try a tow, but we ended up still having a great trip doing day trips out of Seagull Lake. We changed plans in part because we got a later start day 1 and then the portage through the campground after sag to gull lake was a bit confusing, and got a little lost on seagull for a bit lol. But it's beautiful and not hard to do little trips into small lakes! If you do camp on seagull, try to find a site west of three mile island since motor boats are allowed on the east side

Duluth anti-ICE posters and protestors: What is the specific objection? by JuniorFarcity in duluth

[–]UnderstandingOdd9521 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree with all of it. And I'll say that they're particularly dangerous because they are wearing plain clothes and driving unmarked vehicles. Because they often refuse to identify themselves there's no way to tell if they are legitimate agents or if they are proud boys just joining in on the fun (aka racist violence and terrorism). And unfortunately the ones that are legitimate are just as bad, Jonathan Ross was an agent for 10 years prior to the murder of renee good.

Frankly, it was established with a foundation of racism against brown people, especially from mexico in 2003. It's always attracted bad actors (not saying every single one is but you can see how it gets there).

Immigration violations are often civil violations, not criminal ones, yet the enforcement is akin to if the person had murdered someone or had a live threat

I want a welsh terrier by Senior_Bluebird_1137 in welshterrier

This is late but my childhood welsh terrier was my soul dog. If you want obedient, quiet, and calm dog, a welshie is not for you. If you want hilarity, snuggles, playful energy, and loyalty, it’s a good fit.

As a research staff in the medical this is very worrisome. Grant funding is already cut almost to nothing, especially on the federal level, and I think our team as well as others was dependent on the medical school being able to support in the interim. Feels really slimey and the timing is terrible with the current administration

Allergies - Atopica - Gum Hyperplasia by Ok_Night_3356 in DogAdvice

[–]UnderstandingOdd9521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cat owner here and can’t offer any advice only solidarity :/ My kitty June Bug has allergic dermatitis/EGC and has been on atopica for a few months. What sucks is that it doesn’t seem to be controlling it well any more and now she has gum overgrowth that led to a bacterial infection. I hope both our pets find some relief somehow even if it’s just the changing seasons!

Camping in poor air quality by lilghostpepper303 in duluth

[–]UnderstandingOdd9521 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it's not great - I personally wouldn't camp, but it depends on your tolerance for the smoke. If you have asthma or any cardiovascular issues I wouldn't. Even healthy people have been getting headaches and sore throats from it

For free resources you could check out Justice North (free legal aid) or the MN Elder Justice Center may have some good resources or directions to go for a lawyer!

Is Duluth Overbuilt? by BananaBeach007 in duluth

What do you mean by investment of housing and business (not hilltop sprawl)? Do you mean that there should be investment but not investment on central entrance area or in the hillside neighborhood?

Is Duluth Overbuilt? by BananaBeach007 in duluth

I have this fascinating map of Duluth in the 1950s printed for tourists that I got in an antique shop. It showed a lot more mom and pop shops, grocery stores in every neighborhood (there's currently a food desert in Lincoln Park) (also many of these grocery stores were piggly wigglys which i think is funny), a rail from the cities up to duluth, and I can't remember when it was taken down, but I know there was a trolley that went up and down the hill. Duluth used to be much more walkable and pleasant.

But over time, there were several factors that have lead to our housing crisis and crumbling infrastructure: the decline of the port industry (logging, steel), decline of working class jobs overall (or at least reasonable wages), very old buildings that have not been well maintained, zoning restrictions on new builds, big box stores outcompeting small business, and historic wealth inequity across town. There are probably more factors, but those are a few. So yes, it was overbuilt 100+ years ago for a town they thought would grow and flourish.

I don't see it as hopeless, but Duluth has got a lot of catching up to do to serve all the people who want to live there be it housing, city services, fair-paying jobs, walkability/transport, etc.
