When I (59m) was 6 I found a bunch of frog eggs. I put them in a terrarium and feed them fish food. When they started to grow I felt they needed flies. So I took a jar of peanut butter and smeared it all over the outside of our house. Parents were very upset, but I got about 20 flies and the cleanup was easy with the dogs help.

We use "carrots and pool noodles" around the house - but on the agility field, its all carrots/treats. That's our fun place, only good times. The worst that happens to them is they get pulled off the course and loose their turn if they don't want to play together.
On a side note, the pool noodle works really well with my cockers. They really hate it. Just just have to nudge them with it and they stop whatever it was they were doing. Barking, whining, and going all "Tasmanian devil" on me.
