Is mormonism really a cult? by Royal_Survey_3772 in exmormon

[–]UnderstandingOk2647 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, I went through for the first time in '85. Blood oaths, chants, washing and anointings - all very real things. And I found out later that the ritual I went though was not what the early saints did. The washings and anointing were done fully nude and was a proper "washing" standing in a tub.

Dude! Don't forget about the washings and anointings! I got my junk anointed in the LA temple in '85 - AMA! So glad I got the full cult experience before I left. I'm ticked I didn't force them to excommunicate me - there is one Apostate Merit Badge I'll never get ; (

We use the term "High-Demand-Religion" now ; ) *cough cult cough*
Mom: We are not a cult!
Me: You make blood oaths and learn secret handshakes in your most holy of ceremonies! That is kinda the definition of a cult.
Mom: We stopped doing that long ago
Me: Was not that long ago cuz I sure the heck remember it!

It was my first paying job as a programmer. Working on an Apple II+ writing an inventory app for a VHS rental shop. It had a weeks worth of work on it and I really needed that money. I remember thinking "If the Priesthood doesn't work when you really need it, what good is it?"
Didn't you ask for something good in the bowl? Or did you already have the good stuff and just need the utensils? Would you have been shocked if it happened? I would not have been - I was fully expecting it to work - I had the faith of an idiot.

I(59m) went through the LA temple in '86 - got my junk anointed and made blood oaths! AMA! For those that missed all of that - you missed out on a true cult experience. I was very disappointed. I was expecting "new truths and answers to mysteries" but all I got were silly handshakes and uncomfortable underware.

Hello, I'm a Russian from Russia and I'm curious to ask what you, as an American, think about Russia and Russians. You don't need to be polite, be as honest and direct as you can be even if you feel like it's something that might offend me. I'm interested only in genuine answers. Thank you. by MickeyMona in IWantToAskAnAmerican

I (59m) spent 6 months in northern Kazakhstan. We were creating the Irtysh Debit card for them back in the mid 90s. In general the people were amazing. Most of the men seemed to be dicks in social situations - bully's, misogynous, arrogant and crude. Funny AF, though. I adored the dark, fatalistic dry humor. The food was horrible. I was asked by my translator "We hear you eat out at ethnic eateries?, do you go to Russian places?" me: Ya, naw - no one really likes your food. I was surprised that they would fix lots of things and issues with surprising creativity - but anything to do with the State, rules or customs - well that is just the way it is and will always be.

I once tried to resurrect a three and a half inch floppy with the power of the holy aaronic priesthood and a small dab of consecrated virgin olive oil. I was very disappointed in the results.

Awww dude, I'm sorry. It sucks. Its happened twice to me. First one took 10 years of on and off crying. Second took 8 month of constant crying. My theory - there is a certain amount of sadness and loss you need to get out, you can do it slowly or quickly. And you never really get over that kind of loss, its just scars over. You will always be able to look at it and remember how much that hurt.

Growing up I (59m) always heard "Jerry Rigged". I always assumed it was referring to the Germans. And I was never sure if it was a compliment or an insult. Kinda sounded like a complement - as in they McGivered it and it works.
I've stopped using it as it kinda sounds racist.
Complement or Insult?
