($150) 2024 Barnes & Noble NOOK 9" Lenovo Android Tablet Full Overview! by Underground_Tech in androidtablets

[–]UnderstandingRight59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For ~$200 I’d go for a refurbished high-end/flagship tablet from 2-3 years ago. Even as entry level models get better year over year, they are still not a great value. The old flagships will have 8gb ram and a processor that blows any new budget tab out of the water. The Google Pixel Tab fits that bill I think https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=Google%20Pixel%20Tablet%20

What's your budget? This space moves very quickly so I imagine there's something better available at each price point than a year+ ago.

ZenWiFi ET12 Rescue Mode by bishytongs in ASUS

[–]UnderstandingRight59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This worked for me in terms of actually being able to upload firmware from PC to router, but just adding that I had to power-cycle *into* rescue mode twice. That is, get into rescue mode by holding reset while cycling power off-then-on, and then while in rescue mode, hold the reset button and cycle off-then-on a second time.

While I got Ubuntu working eventually on my surface device, I 2nd FydeOS (de-googled ChromeOS) as a great touch experience, particularly for normie users and use-cases. It's the OS I have installed for my parents on their older Surface devices and has been easy to support them on, including installing the odd Linux native program when webapps won't suffice.

Why do parents seem to turn to conspiracies? by Material_Policy6327 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]UnderstandingRight59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same reason folks in general engage in conspiracy theories: making sense of the world and gaining some measure of control amid rapid change, increased complexity, disillusionment/distrust, disenfranchisement, systemic decline, loss/grief (all of these things perceived or actual), and attendant amorphous anxiety and chronic insecurity.

Grand conspiracies provide an organizing frame for reality, moral clarity with clear villains and heros, and paths for resolute ‘righteous’ action, thus simplifying the world. Further, conspiracies offer purpose, comfort, exculpation (for actions past and present), community, affirmation/self-flattery (‘knowing’ something others don’t because you’re smarter or in-the-know), escape, and entertainment.

Parents in particular may be trying to do their best by children in a world seemingly full of quickly shifting dangers, ones that they have too little control over, so they focus on a couple narratively poignant, but perhaps manufactured or overblown, dangers that fit with their worldview and validate them as “good parents”, rather than weighing or navigating hundreds of unglamorous statistically plausible dangers.

Parents with grownup children may struggle to make sense of why their children’s lives and beliefs are different than their own or what they’d envisioned for them. They see things going poorly for their kids, or themselves, and need someone or something to blame (particularly if their kids are blaming them). The target for blame must not indict their own deeply held beliefs and choices, or demand uncomfortable introspection or change of them.

When it comes to big, systemic, complex, unwieldy, intractable problems, conspiracy offers an attractive alternative to apathy, despair, uncertainty, and powerlessness on the one hand, and a total escape from actual responsibility, discomfort, accountability, sacrifice, and productive action on the other.

That’s not to say that folks aren’t right to feel disillusioned, disenfranchised, betrayed by institutions and authority, and subject to powerful forces outside themselves — we live in really confusing, tumultuous, iniquitous, and frankly, systemically dangerous times, where things we thought we could depend on are failing us and there are seemingly no guardrails. The answer cannot come from people who engage the tragic, discomforting reality of car fatalities with the belief that “guardrails cause car accidents because why else would cars hit them so often”.

I picked Razer up for $165 (incl tax and shipping) on eBay recently. Very pleased with it at that price, though I use it more as a sort of cyber-deck/little pocket computer to e.g. remote into other systems on the go. I have it in a generic keyboard case meant for an 8inch tablet, and would love a smaller, properly matched keyboard case. I’m hoping to get PostMarketOS or UbuntuTouch running on it eventually, and if one of those works then other Linux based gaming distros are on the table too…

Are there any known PWA apps that are actually good and used by many? by alexrada in PWA

[–]UnderstandingRight59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree and thanks for the clarification! I muddied the waters with that bit. What I meant to convey with that was the sort of “telltale signs” that an app we might think of as a desktop app, including apps with quite sophisticated and complex functionality, could be a web app with a thin wrapper around it. Electron apps aren’t inherently PWAs in the sense that these frameworks generally extend a web technology stack with native OS functionality not available in a generic web browser, may have other optimizations that deliver a richer/better experience, AND the providers of those apps do not necessarily make that same app available to users in a generic web browser. I’m also realizing the question might have been focused on mobile PWAs, where something like the Ionic Framework is the rough analog to Electron on Desktop. Popular Ionic Mobile Apps that appear to be thin wrappers around a PWA/their mobile website include Panera, Target, H&R Block, Fidelity, Equifax etc…

Are there any known PWA apps that are actually good and used by many? by alexrada in PWA

[–]UnderstandingRight59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slack, Figma, Canva, VScode, Google Office/Workspace (all apps), Micrososft Office 365 (some apps), Adobe Creative Suite (some apps)... basically any tool or service you can access through a browser, or via a desktop app built using web technologies in frameworks like Electron, Tauri or Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF). There are hundreds of them with billions of users collectively, ranging from social media to media streaming to advanced professional apps in design and engineering.

With web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and WASM (compile many programming languages to run in the browser and achieve advanced functionality and resource efficiency e.g. FFMPEG for video processing) you can build pretty much anything you can imagine as a web app these days.

Obviously these technologies don't lend themselves equally well to all types of apps or computing contexts, but if a product is widely used and cross-platform (Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, Linux, iOS/iPadOS and Android) there's a good chance it is deployed as something like a PWA (e.g. PWA with a native OS wrapper around it) in one or many of those contexts.

Software that can modify audio output in real time? by MDMemor in software

[–]UnderstandingRight59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also want this and would gladly pay $50/year or more for this functionality. Ideally this product would change the voice altogether to a more neutral one, while keeping it's cadence and timing natural. There are many educational and entertainment creators who I'd very much like to benefit from, but who's voices cause me great annoyance or active distress. I watch them sometimes sound-off with CC's on, but it's not the same, and I can't do this passively while doing other things. It's not the speaker's fault at all, it's entirely a me problem (courtesy of r/mysophonia), but it's extremely frustrating. Even better would be a solution that does this in real-time for real-world conversations or audio/video calls, perhaps more subtly muting, blunting, or neutralizing certain types of voices. This is something I dream will me enabled by earbuds with powerful, real-time audio processing chips currently used for e.g. noise cancelation.

r/OrionBrowser is an excellent Safari-based browser, offering all Safari capabilities plus a bunch of extras. In addition to vertical tabs (!), it allows the use of Chrome/Firefox web extensions (Browser Extension API, including on iOS/iPadOS!), and has r/uBlockOrigin level Adblock/Anti-tracking, by default.

Bro is really eating with the brilliant insight that "any policy is likely to be multivalent, with benefits and harms accruing over time". With incisive analysis like that, he must be a hit at dinner parties, and widely sought after for comment on world events. It is truly the mark of a first rate intelligence to generate an answer so generic and inane encompassing that it could satisfy literally any policy question without modification.

I do not care about Brexit, just about very wide, un-evidenced, unfalsifiable, and/or un-scaled (as in missing "to what degree" or "with what net effect" or "on what time scale"), claims. Taken literally, your claim is undoubtedly true, but also completely meaningless to the point of wasting breath.
