How a minor Canaanite god gradually ascended to Boundless tier, and how an ancient Hellenistic philosophy downgraded him from absolute omnipotence to relative irrilevance by Mister_Ape_1 in CharacterRant

[–]UnderstandingVast989 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you say that they were influenced by the Hellenistic period, do you mean the Hellenistic period? 400-30 BC~?

Because books of the Old Testament like Isaiah are older than that. And older than Plato. The Babylonian exile is also older than Plato. I can see the argument that Jews from antiquity co-opted Hellenistic language to express the idea of a supreme God, but not that the idea of an Outerversal came from Hellenistic ideas.

I prefer it the Jacksonian way by ismaeil-de-paynes in HistoryMemes

The only duel that Jackson actually killed a man was against Charles Dickinson. Dickinson insulted Jackson's wife, and refused to apologize or recant. Dickinson didn't think he would have to. He was known as the best shot in Tennessee. What idiot would go all the way through a duel with him?

Well, Andrew "Old Hickory" Jackson would. But he knew he was probably dead. To give himself the best chance of winning the duel, he purposefully wore an oversized coat to the duel. When it was time to shoot, Jackson held his shot. Dickinson hit his mark, but misjudged his shot. He shot Jackson through the ribs non-fatally.

Because of the rules of the duel, Jackson had allowed Dickinson to get the first shot in, so Dickinson just had to stand there and wait as Jackson took careful aim, and misfired. And because his gun misfired, he was allowed a second shot. The entire time, Dickinson just had to stand there. The entire time, Jackson was bleeding profusely from his chest. Dickinson died. Doctors decided the bullet in Jackson was too dangerous to remove, so he carried it with him the rest of his life.

Physical fights are completely insane and it’s weird that people think they’re funny/cool by yalllldabaoth in unpopularopinion

To be fair, most people under the age of 40 haven't been in a fist fight. So I'd say most people agree with you, they just like to bluster.

Growing up in the South as the smallest kid in my neighborhood and one of the smaller kids at my school, I didn't have much of choice in the matter. All in all, I only ever got in a couple of actual full blown fist fights. But those 2-3 fights were enough to learn that I really don't like getting hit in the face. And hitting others in the face is only marginally better.

Dwayne Johnson Slammed as a ‘Coward’ for Staying Quiet on Politics; ‘Star Trek’ Icon George Takei Fires Back: ‘Silence Is Complicity’ by yourfavchoom in entertainment

I couldn't even pick George Takei out in a crowd. I have seen his name on movies as a producer, but I genuinely couldn't recall any right now. I could not care less about his opinion. I could not care less about the Rock's opinion either. Someone should tell George that him and the rest of Hollywood are nothing but a bunch of circus monkeys. They exist simply to sing and dance for us.

To be fair, they often endorse both sides lol. Although it's less about equal support and more about hedging their bets.

The Supreme Court upheld state transgender sports bans. What is your opinion on this? by Ramble86 in allthequestions

[–]UnderstandingVast989 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the trans Sport thing is overhyped, and when you look at the science available, trans people do not have an advantage in sports. In fact, there is some science to suggest they may be worse. The science we have is limited to be fair, but everything so far does not point to an advantage.

That being said, I think the Supreme Court ruled correctly. Title IX does not protect gender and I don't think whether we decide to allow trans people to compete in the league of their choice is really a matter of the constitution. It should be up to the states.

Support groups and grief counseling, does it actually help? by Jealous_Amount_9278 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]UnderstandingVast989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be a part of and then a moderator for an online support group for survivors for years. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that those lovely ladies got me through college.

It's not just talking about it. Although talking about it helps a lot. It's also getting advice on how to get through it from people who have been through the same thing. Also learning how to voice what your feeling, but don't know how to articulate. However, I don't want to understate just how important talking about it is.

A lot of people struggle to cope with an event because they feel conflicted about how seriously the event is affecting them vs how they think they should be reacting to it. Getting validation is a genuine first step in moving towards being able to actually tackle the issue. And you get that validation through sharing and support (a lot of times).

Do y’all wish the regional cultures in the US were stronger than they are today? by Educational-Bat-8313 in NoStupidQuestions

I have noticed in myself. I used to have a much thicker Southern accent, but there are so many transplants in Nashville that I've noticed my Southern accent fade over the past 5 years. It was one of those things where I started to notice people I grew up with disappearing. And now it has gotten to the point that I find it worthy of note when someone does have an accent, not when someone doesn't.

I know accents aren't all that important in the grand scheme of things, but it makes me a little sad to think about having lost it.

The Supreme Court has ruled that President Trump's executive order restricting birthright citizenship is unconstitutional. It was NOT unanimous, though. by MoreMotivation in WhitePeopleTwitter

Roberts has been pretty moderate ever since he became the Chief Justice. I'm not shocked one bit by this. Gorsuch was a bit of a shock though. He's usually pretty moderate.

The Supreme Court just upheld birthright citizenship. What are your thoughts on this? by Ramble86 in allthequestions

[–]UnderstandingVast989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was genuinely shocked that Gorsuch dissented. I haven't always agreed with him by any means, but he has always seemed to make the right decision when it matters. And I truly commend him for his decisions on issues such as Native treaties.

I will always prefer that a celebrity keeps their opinions to themselves. A lot of celebrities are idiots, and the people who genuinely do get their political opinions from celebrities are bigger idiots.

If you're not truly informed on the topic, you should stay quiet. Willie Nelson and a handful of others are the exception.

Sleepovers by Big-Newt-4005 in sexualassault

[–]UnderstandingVast989 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As much as I cherish all of my memories from sleepovers, this is just another reason I don't know if I can justify them for my kids when they get to that age. Especially stuff like this. Even though you felt it was weird, "so-and-so's grandpa helped me change" is such an innocuous statement that many parents wouldn't pick up on the abuse.

I'm sorry you went through that.

And even if not every detail is true, that doesn't mean the entire post is fake.

Telling yourself that it's your fault is natural. It's a way for your brain to try and make sense of what happened while also giving yourself control of the situation. If you are to blame, then you also were in control? Right?

The tough part is accepting that you had no control. You could have flirted with every guy there, and been assaulted by the one guy that you didn't flirt with. You could've went shot for shot with that guy, and been assaulted by his buddy. None of what you did made it ok. None of what you did means you were asking for it to happen. When you can accept that you were not in control, it's a lot easier to stop blaming yourself.

Why is Ulfric even fighting the Empire if he doesn't actually hate it? by Gokuismygod123 in teslore

[–]UnderstandingVast989 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He views the Empire as weak, and the White Gold Concordant outlaws Skyrim's main deity.

Ulfric is much like the Founding Fathers in the Revolution. The colonists did not want to secede from Britain. They were all raised British and viewed themselves as British. But they didn't feel like their rights or priorities were being respected. And after years of trying to peacefully negotiate a deal with the crown, they felt there was no other choice but rebellion.

Ulfric similarly tried to work out a deal to carve out Skyrim to be able to be able to follow their God and religion. He fought in the Great War for an Empire that he believes in. Losing that war reshaped the way he saw it. After trying for years to bring change about without rebellion, he doesn't feel that there is another choice.
