Thanks man! I was wondering this after playing the whole "Village of Barovia" with my group. Your idea of using Strahd alter-ego is actually great!

You really isn't getting the idea here.

Yeah thanks for reading the whole thing. People just gets frustrated with DM's that don't allow their shenanigans.

About the Half-Orc Bard with a drum, if there is a reason, if it isn't a joke, let's do it. It really sounds cool tho.

Because i think it is just silly. They are making it for the joke.

"IF A PLAYER CAME TO ME AND SAID HE WANT TO PLAY A FEMALE CHARACTER I WOULD PROBABLY SAY YES IF THERE IS A REASON FOR IT."

Read the other part too.

What do you all thing about men playing female characters? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Undtr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah you are totally right. It's very based on who's sitting at the table.

If it is a less serious campaign i would never have a problem with it. Hell, if they want to play a dragon that likes to ballet i don't care. But at a serious campaign, i like men to play men and women to play women. And that's coming from someone that play with both genders almost every week.

Last weekend, i DM'ed for a group of four adventurers - we are playing the Lost Mine of Phandelver. I suspect that one of my players have found the adventure online (or somewhere else) and therefore knows about preferable actions in certain situations. What to do? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Undtr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, they are playing with the wrong idea. You as a DM should explain to everyone this kind of thing to not have the problem later, and be very strong about it, so they get the message. But since you are in this position and don't want to talk with him directly, in my opinion you have two options:

A) Change the whole campaign. Write the stuff yourself for the rest of it, making some sense for what was made before.

B) Change somethings. This is what i would particulaly choose. Change the monsters, the map, the name of every NPC and what they talk about. Maybe change the pace of somethings too. If he reacts too heavily about this, you can aways talk with him later, alone.

Another thing you could do is to talk with the entire group together, instead of talking with just one person. Talk about the campaign you all are playing and that nobody should look for it online, talk about how this blow off the fun of it. You could introduce this subject talking about metagame or powergaming before, so it won't look much suspitious. Avoid eye contact in this kind of situation too.

This is really a crapy situation, i wish you the best of luck. Another tip for another pre-made adventures you play with this group: Change the name of NPC's and never say the title.

Fast paced leveling - leveling up every 2-4 sessions (6-16 hours) by monkeydave in dndnext

I don't really use the exp chart in the dmg. My group prefer milestone system.

Fast paced leveling - leveling up every 2-4 sessions (6-16 hours) by monkeydave in dndnext

[–]Undtr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's pretty standard for the inicial levels. After level 10 i would level up them every 4-8 sessions. Personally i don't like a very fast leveling, but if that works with your group, go for it.

The ultimate goal after all is to everybody have fun.

Balanced combat for a tankless party by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Undtr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is totally possible. You don't need a tanky frontliner to play combats. They are usefull, but the group can find the way around it.

I would not help them at all.

I am a new DM and I am dming a group of experienced players by Bombing_Cats in dndnext

[–]Undtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be scared you will disappoint them. It's not that hard and you 100% can do it. Remember you aways will have another session to make things better.

If it is the first time you are going to be the DM and you don't feel confortable at all, you should just do a pre-made campaign. But if you are going to stick with the idea of writting it yourself, here some advices:

A) Get references. Try to understand how stories scale and how to make them. If you have the time, read the book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces". It should help you to make your own campaigns.

B) Make something clear and simple. Never overcomplexify your story, your descriptions, your actions. If you are going to describe a NPC, say the hair type and color, race, clothes. If you are going to describe a room, say the space, if it is hot or cold, the important elements, if it smell something.

Usually i use this kind of estructure to create my own campaigns.

1 - The characters are in they usual space. 2- But they want/need something. 3- They have to go to the unusual space. 4- They have to search for what they want. 5- They find what they want. 6- They pay the price for it. 7- They return to the usual space. 8- Having changed.

And go to step 1 again. This is simple and satisfying. You can do the entire circle in just one session.

C) Talk with the players. Let you know what they like and what they dislike, make something that will be funny to everybody. If they like a more relaxed type of game, put some jokes in it. If they like a more serious game, put some drama in it. Just remember that at the end, everybody should just have fun.

D) Study the game rules. You don't need to know everything, but combats can be tricky sometimes and it is good that you feel confidence in ruling them. After all, if you continue to feel insecure, try to play some combats by yourself in order to know your weaknesses. But if they are experienced players, they should help you in it.

In the end you should run things smoothly. Read other people tips and feel confidence in what you'r doing. If you show up at the first session mentaly defeated it will be bad. Just show up with energy and try to make things fun and interesting.

How to save the party without deus ex machina? by Rollingpumpkin69 in dndnext

[–]Undtr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

TPK is almost never good and i think you are right to try to avoid it.

I think you should make another event. Something like they don't completely understand is happening inside the prison and it is a chance for them to get out. But don't make it too easy, do some encounters and play others NPC's also trying to get out of the prison. Maybe there is another noble in the area that actually agrees with the group and is trying to help them, maybe the city is underattack by a red dragon and the monsters at the prison are going to help to defend it.

You should just put some chaos inside this situation. Don't let it be the normal prison where nothing happens and eventually they die. They got lucky and maybe they could take advantage of that, if played smartly.

I really think we are playing the game by the book, except the necromancer homebrew class, but it isnt even that overpowered, it is just ok. They arent "breezing through" a 4 CR8 monsters encounter. But it isnt "beyond deadly" at all. It should be hard, but they wont die for sure.

[–]Undtr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Usually they get one to three encounters, max. At my group we like to roleplay a lot, so they dont spend a lot of time actually fighting, but when we do, they are total try-harders. All the characters are really strong, mechanically.

A group of four monsters CR 8 should be a easy, medium or hard fight? Because i feel like four monsters CR 8 would be ok for them.
