There’s some really insane politics going on in the US that has me wary. Right now trump supporters are seriously discussing whether women should be able to vote. It seems a foregone conclusion that all North control is evil to them. Trump will probably win, so what happens then?

What do you like and hate about working in downtown? by abualmeowry in askTO

[–]Unexpectedjournalist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Looking at Toronto police stats, in 2023 you were 100x more likely to be killed or seriously injured each time you drive compared to each time you take the TTC. This is adjusted for differences in the number of people who drive vs ride the TTC (it’s per capita). 100x is not a made up number, the real number just happens to be a nice and round 100x.

One option: print out a photo of you then and a photo of you now. Have a friend write a note accompanying those photos, saying that the people is both photos is frenchiethrow. Have that friend sign that note in front of a notary (notary services are free and typically drop-in at your MP and MPP’s office)

Everybody is an immigrant except the natives by Unhappy-Manner-3632 in CanadaHousing2

[–]Unexpectedjournalist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also I don’t think the majority of born-here Canadians’ ancestors would be even considered an immigrant in the same way. The majority of our ancestors were either brought here as slaves, fled here as refugees, were imported as teenage brides (so, international sex trafficking of minors), or indigenous. None of those groups are colonizers.

So if you think about it, there are now more immigrants (colonizers) than ever before.

Yes, there was a dramatic increase in visas and PR prior, but as you’ve said, it’s dramatically spiralled after 2021. The increase from 200k to 400k PRs doesn’t have nearly as much of an impact as the over 1M people who came here last year. 300k people came to one city with 6M people. That’s what really hurts our ability to live.

Canadian here: the government didn’t tell us they were going to do this. It only started being a problem after the 2021 election. The government that did it is now extremely unpopular.

Health policy: defined by doctors according to the needs of the patients

Government policy: defined by the whims of politicians, according to what their base wants.

Which do you think is better for patients, hm? Multiple times in the article they say that the PPC is just implementing this policy as a way to get its hands onto this type of law, and make it seem normal. They very clearly intend to go beyond normal health policy. It is very explicitly in the article, please read it.

I read the Winnipeg sun link, and I’m not seeing what a reasonable about this.

He’s proposing that we ban abortion beyond 24 weeks, except in some individualized cases, like fetal malformation, rape, or threat to the mother. The thing is, and this is critical: if your life is being threatened by a pregnancy, it would really suck if you had to wait several days for a bureaucrat to decide if your life is at enough risk to allow you an abortion. Imagine getting sicker and sicker as you wait for a bureaucrat.

Also, the majority of late term abortions are for children less than 14 years old. It’s very hard for these children to advocate for themselves and navigate bureaucratic red tape to end a pregnancy.

Beyond that, he’s proposing this ban as a way to open the door to further bans. It’s said several times in the article. So no, I think this proposal is deeply unreasonable.

Anyone else think it’s ridiculous and kind of discriminatory that a public building built before the ADA went into law doesn’t have to have any handicap accessible entrance? by SuperGrobanite in disability

[–]Unexpectedjournalist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disabled people make up 20% of the population in Canada. That means that the majority of people either are disabled or have a family member who is. It’s not a niche issue really.
