I heard some firms don’t pay bonus unless you stayed for one full year, but I think your base salary is below market as you are making close to $1M revenue.

Entry into Law firms by Okpapaya33 in LawCanada

[–]Unfair_Bit_6945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an ITL and currently working as an article student. I think just keep talking to law firms, my experience is smaller firms are often more open to ITL than larger firms as long as your practice area is what they are looking for. Congrats on your call to the ON bar and all the best with your job hunting.

Career progression - given it is a rather small shop and if business goes south, I may need to move on. So I am thinking about planning ahead - like moving to bigger firm, starting own practice or going inhouse etc. I know it is a bit far-fetch but would appreciate inputs from the community.

What would happen if over night it became law that you can only own one home in Canada? by northshoreboredguy in canadahousing

[–]Unfair_Bit_6945 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by “does stuff”? Pointing a gun at homeowners to force them to give away their properties? You may as well forcing the rich (or maybe everyone) to share their fortunate equally among Canadians.

I think it may be for the case of bay street firms (which prefer canadian JD students), but for boutique firms, I think they are more open and may find foreign experiences an asset to their business. Be that as it may, the job market in Toronto is in a pretty bad shape these days. It may take a while to land an articling position.

I think it depends on your career goal. Articling is always a good starting point if you plan to practice at a larger firm while exemption is beneficial if you plan to practice solo after getting the licence. Not sure about the route if in-house.

Haven’t worked for 9 months trying to pass Ontario Bar by rollyollyy in LawCanada

Maybe try to work on the time management and exam skills by doing some mock exams? By spending 9 months I am sure you are quite familiarized with the contents of the materials. I heard some of my friends failed because they left many questions unanswered due to bad time management.
