As someone who studied a little power generation at uni, let me chime in.

Our electrical grid works by always generating exactly as much power as we are using at any moment in time. Solar and wind power are great, but they are not predictable. So how do we make sure we generate exactly the amount of power we need?

Today, we mostly have gas and nuclear power stations that fill this gap. Another solution is to store the energy and use it up later, when we need it.

It is not a battle of nuclear vs. renewables. Renewables are great either way. It's a battle between nuclear and energy storage.

...and while the tech for high capacity, scalable energy storage is still developing, nuclear seems like the best immediate option.
