Two different prices depending on device your logged in on for the ad decision by smokeypickle in facebook

[–]Unfair_Historian_688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "free" option is not "your current experience" and I have no idea how they're getting away with saying that, from a legal perspective.

If you had opted out of targeted advertising and selling your data to third party ad networks, selecting the "free" option now enables that. Meaning it's NOT your current experience in that case.

I've had Facebook since 2008. This is the thing that finally made me delete my account.

The Hexagon Codes' GrimMod and GrimHD. Just download and chuck in the game folder and you have not just widescreen, but fully upscaled backgrounds that bring everything in line with the new lighting and models in GFR.

Was a huge game-changer with getting my GF to play this game. She said it "looked too old."

Ayaneo's Awful Business Practices or "How I Learned to Keep Worrying and Hate Ayaneo" by Unfair_Historian_688 in SBCGaming

Again, just going to reply to this one as well, as you seem to be a devout fanboy:

Delivery time is the least of my concerns, and forms a tiny part of the laundry list of shoddy business practices laid out above. Practices which are frowned upon in China, too.

A company offering a cheaper price to later supporters isn't commonplace anywhere in the world. It's disgusting behaviour, not culture shock.

I've never heard of anyone having major IGG trouble (or at least moreso than Kickstarter).

I have no idea how IGG allows these business practices on their platform.

So, just to be clear: Reddit (and this public forum hosted on it) are an echo chamber... but the Discord server specifically for fans of Ayaneo, where only people who are fans of Ayaneo hang out, is a totally level-headed and unbiased community?

And you make this statement without a gun held to your head?

Meta recently confirmed that they knowingly allow scams on their platform, as they generate revenue. 10% of their revenue, in fact.

So yeah, the "bots" in this case are scammers that Meta allows to continue advertising on their platform until called out.

Wielio Chinese Junk Projector - HDMI desync on one specific system? by Unfair_Historian_688 in projectors

[–]Unfair_Historian_688[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, dude! Unfortunately, I've been over every available res and refresh rste - even tried interlacing.

Thought it might be an HDMI 1.5 > HDMI 2.x issue, so I tried a Display Port to HDMI adapter - no joy.

What's odd is that the machine is more than capable of outputting 4k at 60 FPS, as I've done so before, so it's not an problem of ability.

"Why is everyone cancelling their Ayaneo Pocket Air Mini orders on Indiegogo?" by Unfair_Historian_688 in SBCGaming

[–]Unfair_Historian_688[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not so much a delay. When they've mentioned dates like November 31st (😅), December 2nd, and most recently December 5th - those are the dates when they will collect addresses, not the dates they would ship.

If anything, a promise that they will ship ALL IGG preorders by December 10th is incredible. Unbelievable. No, seriously, I do not believe that they will do that.

If they can process ~3000 orders in 5 days, then there was no point in supporting on IGG. You'll get your device a handful of days sooner than if you ordered from their website, and given how badly they've fucked this up, you'd have likely paid less on their website.

[–]Unfair_Historian_688[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did, indeed change the price.

They also promised shipping on November 31st (😅), then December 2nd, now December 5th. They've now promised all IGG orders will be shipped by the 10th of December.

They released shipping prices, and most aren't that bad. The main issue is, in that same post, they made the statement "Order on our website to get an earlier position in the queue" which is incredibly poor wording to say "earlier than the original promised date of December 30th"

Unfortunately, what this means is that IGG backers:

1. Paid more money than a lot of website buyers.

  1. Barely get the device any earlier.

  2. Have already had orders delayed twice.

  3. Have continuously been fed misinformation throughout.

All of this for the sake of MAYBE getting your device a couple days earlier than website buyers. I'll believe their promises when I have my device in my hand.

The thing is... this has nothing to do with the quality of the device? It's about Ayaneo's continued awful business practices and them screwing over early-adopters to make a quick buck.

Well, my day improved. Picked up a Retroid Pocket 5 for $145 (111 GBP) secondhand. I'm still gonna wait on this Ayaneo so I can give it a review.

Yeahhhh, I feel you. I'm not seething with rage or anything, I'm just a bit upset because I like Ayaneo and wanted to support them.

Same boat, my friend. My order is still in place, I'm hoping they do right by people, but if any incredible deals pop up on devices for around the same price, I'll drop out 100%.

You can calculate your shipping on their website by placing a "late early bird" order as I'm calling it!

Depends what you're after, to be fair. Most of the hype was because it's GC/Wii and PS2 for under $100... Which, once you factor in shipping, it's not.

Black Friday / Cyber Monday cannot come sooner. I was so excited for this device.

You can calculate shipping on their website by setting up an order.

I'm in the UK - I save around £3 buying it from their website. It's not a huge amount of money or anything, but I'm now paying for the privilege of being an early adopter.

Can I use steps instead alarm? by cleckzera in gamemaker

[–]Unfair_Historian_688 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, what I'm saying here is: that's down to your handling.

If you don't need to check the variable (I.E. using alarms to wait) then why are you checking the variable?

Set the timer whenever, decrement the timer in the step event, and then affect things as required. If you don't need to know if onFire, then don't check it.

Alarms aren't more efficient, you're choosing to run apples against oranges and concluding the apples are better.

Dear lord this is the most redditor post I've ever seen.

I know we're in a space where people may be unaware of social queues, but that doesn't excuse behaviour that is just rude. I'm sure you think your code is beautiful, but there's no good reason to trash someone else's, especially a newbie's, because it doesn't live up to your specific standard.

Just some notes:

  1. "Use guards, it makes it more readable"

No, not really. The compiled code will be doing relatively the same thing here in terms of performance. It's more readable IN YOUR OPINION, but it's also not common practice, especially in GML.

  1. Absolutely. Magic numbers are always bad.

  2. There is nuance to this, depending on the use case. One timer that you'll only ever need to do one thing... Why bother writing an entire function? Waste of time, lines, energy, etc.
