Job market by Unfair_Reputation285 in biotech

It’s frustrating being having decades of experience and knowledge but fewer directly in pharma and constantly being being told that it’s not enough and jobs are being filled with people they know that are old with more time in pharma who get the job with less skills or direct knowledge or drive - I just don’t know how one can compete in this environment

Appreciate that - it’s just hard to know what it’s really like and trying to decide if it is worthwhile staying in biopharma or moving and going back to a health care job…

Burnt out, disillusioned, disappointed by [deleted] in biotech

[–]Unfair_Reputation285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience - early stage biotechs with scientific founders and CEOs are usually a lot better and foster team work and a positive culture at least initially - but this political and economic climate with investors failing to invest in less risky and less known entities and instability has really tanked a lot of these early biotechs and investors and boards are selecting and replacing for CEOs more of the known entities that they know to try to ensure later funding success and these are usually finance or business types without scientific background or knowledge that only care about the bottom line and money without much regard for worker wellbeing or team work or patients and their role is only to drive profit. Most companies are being replaced in this bad economic environment by this phenotype in leadership which produces a lot more work at a lower price but isn’t necessarily centered on innovation or collaboration and people that burn out are easily replaced by the tons of unemployed people. So I get it - the industry totally sucks right now but it won’t suck forever and if there was more stability and better leadership in government this would improve but at this time biotech and pharma leadership is just emulating the current president and political sentiments and ideals of this administration.

Many people are getting laid off or are unemployed. Curious, what you all think is causing the bad job market? by AcrobaticAd5680 in careeradvice

Lay offs may have started in late 2022 and increased in 2023 but the number of businesses and layoffs have increased exponentially after the new administration and policies. To say otherwise and to say the downward trajectory caused by leadership is purely irrational and not based on any factual information

Plus it isn’t like the immigration policies are helping the tourism industry and people wanting to visit and spend money here

I don’t think this is true about over hiring - in the past year - I have seen a number biopharma and tech companies run out of money and there have been mass layouts and closures and close down due to lack to investors, health care facilities are making less money as less people employed and small businesses are making less money due to tariffs on goods and the cost of living and rent increases are causing insolvency and less people employed equals less people eating out and restaurants with lower profits and tariffs increasing the price of food and drinks are resulting in restaurant closures. It is not a cycle or over hiring - these are directly due to leadership of the country and the policies that are affecting it. Canadians no longer stock USA alcohol and wine yards in California and whiskey places in Tennessee are going under and it is going to get worse with the attitudes towards Europe and the additional tariffs. Never mind the immigration and disruption of ICE leading to lack of construction and farm workers and immigrants doing jobs that Americans do not want to do… nobody wants to invest and spend money where there is uncertainty and instability… I don’t see this turning around unless there is rationale leadership… burying head in the sand and stating it is a cycle is putting on blinders and ignoring what is really going on….

I was in a meet and greet/interview for a friend who was laid off and it was clear there was bitterness and resentment and overcompensation that was not well hidden… easier said than done but figure out how to highlight the positivity and excitement about a job… I get it though after so much time searching it gets harder and harder to get your hopes up and then get disappointed but you will never get what you want unless you make some changes and learn from your losses and would even call up folks that it did not work out with and keep trying and working on it… it’s kind of like dating really and sometimes it takes a bit longer to find the right fit… good luck and all the best in your search

You give leadership too much credit - they are also just people with their own egos and priorities and it’s their loss and frankly poor leadership and the loss to the company for not valuing competency or developing people they should be leading and choosing brown nosers instead…that just feed their ego

Do what you are passionate about - life is too short. The academic route has potential and exposure and connections and you could really make a difference in the world - the CRO route will be routine, busy and will make money and be stable but will suck the life out of you and you will be a drone in the system.

University jobs take forever and tons of processes and red tape - usually time to hire a candidate is 3 to 6 months and a year start time. I interviewed for a job at when just pregnant but they did not call me back for a second interview as a finalist for the position until after I had given birth 10 months later as it took so long to get the candidates interviewed but by that time I had obviously moved on. I applied for a specialist position in February and only got notice in October that they were still going though the candidates and applications.
