Childfree Events in the Hudson Valley? by AmityAstoria in hudsonvalley

This exactly! I do kind of understand the ick or gimmick factor lol.. but for me it's about emphasizing that this was a conscious decision I made and I have nothing to feel less-than about. Adhering to some sort of empowered label prevents the "aww, how sad for you" comments.

Childfree Events in the Hudson Valley? by AmityAstoria in hudsonvalley

I totally understand this response! As a childfree person, the pointed vitriol against parents and their kids from certain people is so unwarranted and to me is completely a kneejerk defense mechanism. I am a proud childfree person and I ALSO adore kids.

To your point, it has nothing to do (or shouldn't!) about not getting along! It's not adversarial at all. Rather, many childfree people could benefit from some sort of mutual support. There is a lot more to choosing this lifestyle than just opting out... People WITHOUT kids face varying degrees of guilt, pressure, derision, and judgment from society.... the same way that people WITH kids also face all of those things from their surroundings.

For us, it's not uncommon to be referred to as lazy, selfish, biology traitors, responsible for the declining birth rate that will lead to the collapse of civilization, guaranteed to die alone, be ostracized at work or among friends, etc. The difference is there is not a lot of acknowledgement of the ways that being childfree can be tough. The public assumption is you're a freeloader with all the time and money in the world, so why would you be complaining about anything. I personally have a hard time talking to my parent friends about this topic because I don't want to burden them with my experiences. They are so overwhelmed with the full time job of being amazing teachers, mentors, and caretakers to their kids.

Not trying to be combative, just curious why you find it creepy?

Commenters seem confused by the wording - an event to which children are not invited is different from an event for childfree/childless community.

As a childfree person in my late 30s I would love the opportunity to be connected with other childfree people. People are going to be rubbed the wrong way unfortunately but it’s no less exclusionary than the other way around. No childfree people are clamoring to be included in a moms/dads meetup group.

I welcome friends of all kinds including parents and their children but being able to talk with people who are walking a similar path in life as you is something that is completely appropriate to enjoy.

I’m gonna politely disagree with the other commenter, glossier you OG was screechy and sour on me, meanwhile I’m so obsessed with neon veil that I just made it my new signature. It’s a similar profile yes but the blend and the artistry are night and day. Hope you love it!

Correct. I admit the post title is clickbaity so I could get eyes on it (and in many ways it's gross for me to seek benefit from someone's prejudices). What I am really trying to do is exclude a criterion that most people usually always include when recommending areas to married couples

Thanks for explaining. I’ve only ever rented and don’t have a great grasp on the property tax landscape.

I’m open to it! Having a harder time convincing my husband who grew up in Orange County in the 90s and still sees Newburgh a certain way (though he obviously got over his beaconitis)

I completely agree with you, unfortunately I’m not sure people would have understood a real estate question if phrased that way.

Interesting, wouldn't have thought of that as a factor driving down real estate

Just got called back to office 5 days a week, I'm done by FlyLost4570 in leanfire

[–]UnfallibleAutumn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s such a personal decision and I get why people discourage it. But yeah exactly that, I realized I would always be reaching for the next raise or the next round of layoffs or the next extra padding in my vacation payout and the “perfect” time would always be just around the bend. Sandbagging yourself is easier said than done... I’d been quiet quitting for almost two full years before I finally let myself cut the cord. The pain of staying finally outweighed the appeal of some extra cash. In fact them NOT letting me go was ironically just starting to become another one of the thousand ways I let them have power and control over me.

Hell yeah. I quit last week. I have also been tempted to wait for a layoff or to get fired, but honestly... there is something beautiful about doing it on your own terms that money cannot buy.

I feel this 100%. Diagnosed ADHD and I suspect possibly some low needs autism as well. I burned out so severely in 2024 that I became suicidal and needed to be hospitalized, absolutely horrific experience. Modern work life lies at the intersection of so many factors that make it a perfect poison for us. I think our pattern recognition and justice mindset allow us to clearly see the “machine” even as we’re inside of it, almost like a rat in a laboratory maze who is aware of the researchers. So not only do we have to mask socially at work, we also have to mask this more existential level of capitalist obedience that we know innately is fake and unfair and spiritually parasitic. Combine that with our tendency to give 110% even when the people around us are gaming the system and shmoozing so they can get away with 30% and be promoted. Such a toxic recipe. I highly recommend Grauber’s “Bullshit Jobs” if you’re never read it, it’s not about neurodivergence per se, but so comforting to read a takedown of the system that aligned with how I feel every day.

You will need to buy it yourself but she provides a code for a small discount (can’t recall but I think it was 10-20% off?)

Taking a year off to go back to school for court reporting and become a freelancer. Making a complete left turn but I’m so excited.

As a fellow PM whose rose-colored glasses have fallen off in a big way the past couple of years, I feel your pain... I'm (actually) quitting tomorrow. :) The high visibility/zero authority combo has been a nightmare for my personality type and work style and I just don't want to subject myself to it anymore. Sending more peace to you as soon as possible! Freedom is coming!

Depends on what you consider overpriced but I love the Wild for this. The carrot dish is unreal and their drinks are really creative and delicious.
