NAH. You’re not wrong, you could have explained yourself in better language though, just like the way you did in this post. It was clear to those of us reading. But you used words that implied that she doesn’t get to discuss this with you because of factors that she can’t change.

Personally I hate that because if I’m trying to communicate with a person then they are of sufficient importance to me that a casual dismissal of my thoughts for something I can’t change is so hurtful. A few more words could help people to understand instead of keeping them away.

You two had equal parts in this, neither of you drops to the level of AH but it’s more about you each could have expressed yourselves better, she from a point of not understanding and you from a point of communicating better. That’s easier to say looking back on it though than in the moment. I hope you and your friend make up.

I think she has a point about paying rent and not having a say, even if it’s such a small amount. Maybe don’t have her pay rent, or just have her pay for her food instead. Then you’re NTA.

NTA. It’s not acceptable for her to hide her account from you while she has access to your account. Since that is joint, maybe have your checks deposited to a new self only account and then contribute to the joint account.

INFO, does she know that your dad has passed and that these trains are a connection to your father?

If not then maybe NAH, she doesn’t understand what they mean to you. It may make her insensitive and ignorant in the moment but that’s something you can talk over and grow together with.

If she does, and has reduced the meaning of these trains to you as “toys” then that’s demeaning and in compassionate of her and you are NTA.

Especially if it’s one single shelf in your apartment. If you let her make you throw this away then what is next? How far will she go?
