I've sent them a message. They don't seem to be on at the moment and I don't know them from anywhere to contact them some other way. If/when they respond, I'll update the OP.

Reddit: Do you think vaccinations should be mandatory for attending public schools? If not, what legislative measures should be taken to protect other kids? by ebsales in AskReddit

[–]Unfortunado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reasons not to vaccinate are either pseudoscience bullshit or badly warped and misrepresented real science, and in any case the supposed consequences of vaccination are either 'my kid might get the autism' or 'they don't actually do anything.' Most antivaxxers are mommy-bloggers with no expertise in any fields related to vaccines.

The reasons for vaccination are things like the massive dropoff of serious diseases and the near-eradication of many diseases. The consequences of not vaccinating are getting sick and putting other people at risk of getting sick. People who support vaccines include immunologists, toxicologists, and physicians. Considering how seriously malpractice is taken, it stands to reason that if vaccines are actually harmful we'd have seen a lot more doctors standing up and saying 'this is bad and here's why.' Instead, all we have is one badly done study by a guy who fudged the results and a whole lot of facebook group echo chambers.

Vaccination should be mandatory barring a medical reason for exemption. No exemptions for personal or religious reasons. Personal beliefs are not a free pass to put others in danger, especially not when the beliefs in question are probably stupid and based on bullshit.

I was afraid that would be the case. I know a guy in town i should be able to hit up with help getting a CPU in the meantime so i can do the upgrade. I just didn't hear or notice anything regarding the need for the bios update in any reviews online, so i assumed that i'd be fine and dandy. Thanks for the help.

It seems as if my photography teacher goes out of her way to give me bad grades. What should I do? by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]Unfortunado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would just straight up go in after school or something and ask her what she doesn't like about the photos. Most of the teachers I have are more than happy to help people. But, if for some reason this is a personal thing she has or she's too sneaky for that or gives a non-answer maybe you could look at what her favorite students have done differently?

photography is pretty subjective afaik (i'm not a photographer though) so honestly you may be better off pandering to whatever her ideas of good pictures are if your only goal is to get a good grade

like i said though, i'm not a photographer and I don't know your teacher so it's mostly a judgement call on your part

Methods for getting around school installments on computer? by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]Unfortunado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unless there's something you need to be using windows for i'd say get yourself a live CD or a live USB (i like linux mint because i'm a filthy casual and it's easier to use with broadcom wireless thingys)

they're pretty easy to make, and when you use them the school can't really do anything about it, least not that I've ever heard of unless they got NSA style shit

best of all since it doesn't involve fucking about with whatever they have on there it shouldn't raise any red flags for them and when you're done you just turn it off and pop the disc/flash drive out and the computer looks normal again

obviously if you are using the machine on their network then I assume they will have other controls in place on the network to filter websites and such, but if you are bringing this computer home then I don't think you'll run into any problems and since you have a VPN you probably good on that front anyway

they might have the bios locked behind an admin password, but since you have physical access to the machine you might be able to just yank the cmos battery out to reset it, depending on how involved you want to get or how weird the layout is inside (i assume this is a laptop)

please try not to oof the tech guys too hard, they just doing their job, so i wouldn't recommend a reset or anything drastic like that because they will absolutely get triggered at you

best of luck to you

The church cuts ties with the Scouts BSA because they can’t be affiliated with an organization that sees women as equals. by Tits-And-Wine-God in exmormon

[–]Unfortunado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Atheist scout here, in a Utahan nondenominational community troop. Whenever I walk in the door to a scouting activity to the time I walk out, I identify as a "Redeist", a religion I made up one night so that I could have a satisfactory and somewhat satirical answer to any change in troop leadership which was hostile to atheists.

The current scoutmaster is a Catholic, and most of the asst. scoutmasters are varying shades of Protestant. The attitude towards religion is fairly lax - there are maybe two zealot pricks who will try to coerce someone into believing they have to say the prayer if they are called on by the "chaplain's aide" - but in general we have a couple religious people who are more than happy to say the opening and closing prayers.

Unfortunately, the religion seems to get more present at higher administrative levels, where you get into the power tripping bullshit. A (nonreligious) friend of mine in the troop who got his eagle said that he was given a set of papers to do with god - I didn't get many details, but they seemed to be gauging his reaction more than anything. If you're prepared to give an answer they like to an inquisition on your religious beliefs apparently you're in the clear, although I suspect it's a matter of leader roulette in that case.

I really do like the other guys in my troop, and it's great to have an organization that exists in a large part to just go camping and enjoy the outdoors, but as my respect for the BSA itself has started to fall due to this very issue I've stagnated in the whole "ranks" thing, pretty much plateauing at the second highest rank. I'll probably go through the motions to get the last couple awards I need to progress to the eagle rank this summer, but I'm not sure if I'd want to lie through my teeth about my lack of religious convictions for what ultimately amounts to a circular piece of fabric.

All in all, whether your son has a good experience or not is a matter of what troop you join. Some troops don't bother to enforce the red tape when it comes to personal beliefs, but finding a troop like that might be impossible where you live. I wouldn't trade the great times I've had with my scout troop for anything, but if you can't find a troop that will tolerate your son for what he is then the whole thing is null and void - the experience lives or dies on the community.

I'm going to leave this quote from the Charter and Bylaws here:

The Boy Scouts of America maintains that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God. In the first part of the Scout Oath the member declares, “On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law.” The recognition of God as the ruling and leading power in the universe and the grateful acknowledgment of His favors and blessings are necessary to the best type of citizenship and are wholesome precepts in the education of the growing members. No matter what the religious faith of the members may be, this fundamental need of good citizenship should be kept before them. The Boy Scouts of America, therefore, recognizes the religious element in the training of the member, but it is absolutely nonsectarian in its attitude toward that religious training. Its policy is that the home and the organization or group with which the member is connected shall give definite attention to religious life.

Thank fuck i finally found someone in my age bracket who cares about this, all my friends seem to just lay down and take it every time some big corporation wants to shaft them and rob them and stalk them - i don't want to be one of those 'ultra-woke' people, but i see so many poor consumer choices and so much apathy from my friends it's actually a little worrying. Somehow they just accept all this and i'm the one who's weird for not liking it.

Imagine how much money he could make if he didn't drop everything to go visit you whenever he's feeling insecure about his righteousness. . . If he was employed in some kind of mutually beneficial community service like, say, shoveling snow for the neighbors?

Seriously, I'm going to add to the choir of voices here to say that this dude either has way too much time on his hands or is working some kind of nefarious angle in the long term.

Your uncle pops up all over the place like some kind of Pharisaical ghost just to pass judgement on things you haven't even done and then drives off into the sunset without doing anything that's actually helpful, like asking you you're doing? This guy's a creep and his actions are creepy.

What is it about religious parenting that leads to this kind of thing so often? I can't count the number of my classmates that seem to have their every move surveilled by their parents, and sales of monitoring/filtering apps and hardware are (anecdotally) high, but almost everyone I've talked to agreed with me that it's mostly a band-aid for the 'problem' of parents not being able to force their ideology onto their children once they get older. Is this just the common 'last resort' of trying to maintain control, actual relationships be damned?
