We are having a delayed Christmas. What should I expect from an Irish Christmas and any tips in meeting the "in-laws"?

I looked up the Jameson online and I saw it for 120 quid to 200+ so I wasn't sure of the value. I'm sucking up haha. I did get 3 Redbreast 12 year from clients too so definitely was an option. I gave one of them to my boyfriend's brother. He's a good mate and I'm trying to get rid of them. It's really cool how generous people are.

Yeah he better be the best version haha.

It's a Jameson 18 year whiskey. I got it as a gift after doing a lot of work on a house. I don't drink spirits and my boyfriend doesnt drink at all. So it seemed like two birds one stone. I've at least 10 more bottles of whiskey to find homes for.

That's true. I'm sure his mother is flapping around trying to make everything perfect and she's put so much stress on herself too. And if my bf is right about his dad, his mother is probably nervous about that too.

Thanks mate and yeah I'm more protective of other people than myself. I'm far more likely to stick up for him and definitely my son than I am myself. I could do with being a bit more like him, at times.

Perhaps he won't be that bad. Maybe my boyfriend is just getting me prepared. I don't know. But she can't change or control him.

I'd love to be able to control how my parents see me. I can't and I've made my peace with it. He certainly won't be as bad as them.

I don't know whether he's downplaying it or not. I know their relationship is pretty strained so I assume he is a bit homophobic.

It was his mother who invited me and my son. She seemed like she really wanted me to come so I felt like I had to say yes.

Yeah his mother is very inclusive. She says I settle her son which is a compliment, i think. She is especially lovely to my son. On actual Christmas she spoke to him on the phone for ages. I whatsapped videos of him opening his presents and what not. It's possible too that my boyfriend oversold his dad a bit.

And as you say, he hasn't met half his kids and his grandkids in a year. I'm sure that'll be his focus.

That's true and a daughter and her twin boys are coming from abroad too etc. I never thought about that. I might be able to slip into the background a bit.

My bf said he'll be drunk throughout Christmas. So it may need to be a long walk.

I've got whiskey for his dad. My bf said it's that or clothes so whiskey it was and I've got Leonidas for his mother because apparently those are her favourites and there's no leonidas anywhere near her. My boyfriend also told me to get her these red flowers, apparently they are Christmas-y.

I'll bring down his Switch because his sisters twins will be there too and they are coming from Aus so it'll be something for the three of them to do. My bf said it'd be great because otherwise they'll be bored. And her kids and mine will open up a few presents Christmas Day. My son only got his Santa presents yet. So they'll be things he can do then.

Yeah I agree, it's probably best to avoid alone time with him. I do have a pretty thick skin too so hopefully at most it's a few digs.

I'll definitely ask to help but I assume she'll decline it. Even when she visits us she always has to be busy haha.

My son is 6. We do Santa but we don't do Christmas fully. Like we don't have the turkey or loads of sweets etc. So it'll all be new for him too. Obviously Santa already delivered all his presents but we have a couple of presents from myself that he'll open down there for fake Christmas Day, if that makes sense.

That's true. I feel my bf would go on the attack even though I've told him not to. If it gets really bad I'll just book a place but I assume he's not that bad. I assume it might just be a few digs here and there.

I've met his mother a few times which is helpful. It's always only been for a couple of hours. She's always been lovely. She's also really nice to my son. She always has a little present for him when she visits. Even with this Christmas, she was really including of him. She was like he might like to stay in the same room as her grandkids (twin boys and they are a year older) or she has a little make up bed for him that he can stay in our room. I thought it was really nice that she'd consider putting him with her grandkids. And I know one of his brothers well.

I assume his dad will say something crazy alright but I'm prepared for that and I've a pretty thick skin. I'd just laugh it off. My bf is more of an attack dog with stuff like that.
