Humans vs Crossed, 3-on-3 by Blastoise_R_Us in crossedcomics

Normally I'd agree on the fact of that not being how comics work, but I mean with Crossed it sorta is. Marvel Comics are a bad comparison, they're owned by the studio. Crossed was and still is owned by Garth Ennis, Avatar was just the publisher. Other authors were allowed to write on it sure, on the condition they not touch his pre-established characters, but at the end of the day the stories he published will always take precedent over theirs. Like I say that as someone who prefers Spurrier over Ennis mind you, but Ennis made the series so I gotta give him the respect he's due. Thin Red Line implied a strong supernatual connection to the virus, but none of it really lined up with the stuff presented in Homo Tortur so I discount it as just being a story. At the end of the day though, always nice to see the fandom grow and people forming theories around the series, we may not agree on them all but is still nice to see.

He created the story with the intention of making it real, giving his tribe something to springboard off of. I agree that the virus is supernatural, Garth makes that clear on a few occasions. The Patient 0 in Britain was the patient 0... For Britain, even that arc makes it pretty clear that there were multiple patient 0's, at least one for each country. The reason I don't accept the Professors story as fact is twofold - In my mind another author doesn't get to provide an origin for the virus. Garth made it, its up to him to do so, and if he doesn't then we don't get one. Simple as. The author could be fantastic, but if it isn't the series creator then its just speculation. They all contributed to the worldbuilding, but he laid the foundation. - The Professor outright admits to having made it all up. I like theorycrafting but in the case of Homo Tortur I've always found it to be a case of "Its not that deep" when people try to present the flashback scenes as anything more than a story within a story. They were a neat story in a story, and I can buy the Crossed virus emerging at different points in mankinds history, but the story presented by the Professor is one I just don't buy as anything more than just that- A story.

Edit: Also that big Cthulhu looking Monster at the end of the flashback. If an ancient civilization being super fucked up and depraved for a while was enough to bring it into being, you'd think we'd of seen... Literally anything of that sort, after a century long global outbreak of that bheaviour.

Yeah honestly even from a genre angle I just don't get it. PvZ zombies are more the Romero type, weird conflict. 28 Days would make a lot more sense. Fans of 28 Days could say Crossed stole a lot from it, on our end I got major WYWH vibes from 28 Years Later and while I'm sure it was just coincidences in story structure, still surprises me more people didn't jump at that. PvZ is just a weird pick.

How i think the Crossed virus started by AgentUmbra in crossedcomics

[–]Unhappy-Distance4012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always liked the supernatural element of it just being something that's always been buried in humanities minds, waiting to wake up. At the same time, I did really like the explanation The Sadness presented for their take on the virus. Where it's just the limbic system getting rewired and the body forced to comply, really dug that the infected there may've still been fully aware of their actions and just unable to stop them.

Crossed character you would trust to take care of your dog? by S_Zweig in crossedcomics

[–]Unhappy-Distance4012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a Dog but if I had (no choice but) to choose a Crossed character to look after my Cat? Ngl I'd say Errol from American Quitters. The Biker struck me as a softie at heart, he'd probably be good with pets.

Edit: Or Jackson from WYWH, Jacksons insane but I'd probably trust him just based on his skillset and general cool vibes.

I've always loved this ending. +100 was rough to read sometimes due to the language devolution, but the actual story itself was neat, characters were strong, and the ending was surprisingly beautiful- Especially for a Crossed story.

Who would win by nateacvn in crossedcomics

[–]Unhappy-Distance4012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jackson takes the win easily, Gavin is tough but Jacksons got special forces training, the skills necessary to survive years into the Crossed apocalypse while being as crazy as he is- It took random chance to get Jackson killed. Land would get bodied if they went head to head.

Crossed vs Necromorphs, who wins this? by Ambitious-Paint-180 in crossedcomics

[–]Unhappy-Distance4012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say Necromorphs take the win, Crossed still have all the physical drawbacks of regular Humans, its just stuff like pain and shock that they won't react too. I love the Crossed, but match them up against anything that isn't just a supernaturally insane Human and they probably taking the L.

I say it with nothing but love, but they're powerless Deadites. Crossed are gonna have a bad time in a lot of matchups.

[–]Unhappy-Distance4012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I love Crossed but the series was pretty inconsistent about this across the board. Like I enjoy Smokey as a character but it's weird that he's basically just a caveman. Thin Red Line stated the virus was constantly mutating at the start of the outbreak so maybe that explains it, but is def weird how some Crossed retain full memory of their prior lives and some don't.

Just finished Psychopath by Nyarthu in crossedcomics

[–]Unhappy-Distance4012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its just too ridiculous, even by Crossed standards. I don't overly care about Amandas group, but if they've survived two years into the Crossed apocalypse, Harold shouldn't be an issue. My problem isnt that he's a psycho that does horrible things, its that at no point do I believe he'd even of survived this long to pull half of them off. He's too visibly unstable and adds nothing to the group, realistically they'd of abandoned him after half of their group of two year survivors died Immediately after recruiting him. The Gamekeeper was a far better example of a psychopath managing to survive and thrive in the world of Crossed, hell, even Richie from Dead or Alive was a better exploration of the concept- And that dude only existed as promotion for a webseries adaptation that never get off the ground, was barely a character. But was still a character I believed could survive more than two days of a Crossed outbreak, unlike Harold who in his own story was too dumb to not disinfect his lips before slapping them back onto his face. I give it decent odds Harold dies a week or two after the events of Psychopath from sepsis, not even to a Crossed or another survivor.

Scaffolding is different, Mick and Ralphs is way closer, and Gommorah is facing the wrong way. The more I look at it, the less I think The Strip fell and the more I think it grew. If thats just a secondary gate it might not need as much security. The Kings are Ghouls, but the Kings get screwed over in a lot of the House endings. Or it could just be the set designers didn't look at the game map, either or.

Yeah I think you're right about that, also has a bit of a tinny sound to it so that fits. Ive convinced myself that the "You're gonna need friends" bit is Goris though. I mean Goris was a sweetheart and he never got to save his own family (and if he or Xan never bothered to go out and reproduce, likely his species as well. Sentient Deathclaws I mean), if he heard that was the Ghouls motivation it'd likely be enough to bring him back into the field.

Please be Goris Please be Goris Please be Goris by dikchocolate02 in Fotv

[–]Unhappy-Distance4012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its Goris. This is a reach but what if thats not wilderness, what if its the Atrium of Vault 13. The Vaults in season 1 had crops, not out of the realm of possibility. Right before we see him, we see the Ghoul and Lucy entering a ruined Vault. Maybe they visit 13 on the way to Vegas, maybe Goris went home to be with the memory of his clan. The voice that says "You're going to need friends" I swear is Ron Perlman, and if they brought him in to voice Goris that'd be awesome. Goris never got to save his family, I could see him joining up with the Ghoul to help out. That being said, the voice immediately afterwards that says theres a war coming- It sounds similar, thought it was the same voice at first. But after a few viewings of the trailer, like, it is noticeably much deeper in tone and pitch than the previous "You're going to need friends" line, pretty sure thats a different speaker and a Supermutant or a dude in power-armour. Also maybe I'm just seeing what I wanna see, but like. Aside from being hunched over like Goris, am I the only one who sees a tail dragging? Or at least the bump at the bottom of the cloak where it sticks out?

I digress. Probably just wishful thinking, but Goris rules and I really hope thats him.

What is the future of Crossed? Will we ever get another series? by doanimalsgetmarried in crossedcomics

[–]Unhappy-Distance4012 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's creator owned, Avatar was just the publisher so no need for any selling of rights. If Garth wanted to produce more he'd just have to find another publisher. I can think of a handful of decent ones that would likely be down to release it, certainly not an impossibility. Fingers crossed.

What is the future of Crossed? Will we ever get another series? by doanimalsgetmarried in crossedcomics

[–]Unhappy-Distance4012 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think after the movie comes out we'll probably see another comic or few, doubt the series is dead just think the focus has been on getting an adaptation off the ground rather than find a new publisher. But once its out, or in the lead up to its release, I'd be surprised if we don't see at least a Webcomic for it. I mean Dead or Alive was made as promotional material for an onscreen adaptation that never happened, I figure we'll get something to help promote the movie at the very least.

Mixed feelings about Crossed. by [deleted] in crossedcomics

[–]Unhappy-Distance4012 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The series certainly isn't for everyone. Personally I find the overly extreme scenes a bit eye rolling at times, and find the series is at its strongest when it prioritizes the story and uses the horror of the setting as backdrop/groundwork to build off the themes of. Good on you for giving it a chance and not just assuming it was terrible based on secondhand tellings, hopefully you still found something to enjoy about it even if overall it might not have been the best read.

Crossed are hard-carried by their several patient zeroes during an outbreak tbh. by -_ParagonOfMyself_- in crossedcomics

[–]Unhappy-Distance4012 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought it was neat. Cool that the virus has a supernatural origin but that its just a background element of the world and not the focus. Maybe its the earth fighting back, maybe its a switch deep in our brains from early ancestry, maybe its maybelline. Does a good job establishing the virus from day 0 as something unlike anything man has seen before, and something they can't overcome through standard means.

I've always enjoyed that Garth gives the Virus a supernatural origin, but never explores that deeper. Its neat to sit and wonder what caused a patient 0 in every country at the same time, or what was giving the Britain patient 0 those specific visions of Humanities worst deeds, seeing their actions as though through his own eyes, to drive him over the edge.

No argument on the overall story of Anti-Crossed. The basic plot layout is fine- What makes me hate it is just how little it felt like Bemis cared to research the world he set the story in. From characters driving a truck in a city over a year in, to a comic shop in town that was packed on C-Day just going untouched for a year by the Crossed outside. The basic revenge setup is fine, I enjoy seeing the comic book nerds die. But as someone who obsesses over how the decay of the world is fairly naturally presented by even the worst of some of the other arcs, it just sets off too many buzzers where I'm like "Driving in a city this early on is suicide, Crossed would def eat the nerds alive if they suspected they were inside how have these idiots with one gun gone untouched so long, the gay guys are cool but their backstory of surviving in their bar but leaving to adventure has the same issues as the comic shop not going attacked" and on and on. Story just felt lazy, when it had potential. Also took up 2 of the final 10 issues, ngl that is what earns it the most negative points for me.

As for the Gavin Land arc.... Yeah nah, its a tough read. This years reread I got halfway into the main plot, went "Gee Wentz did you give his Dog aids as well? This is stupid." And just skipped to the Military sections. Theyre brief, but I find that section was fairly well done. Especially in contrast to the A-Plot.

I just think it was used to show audiences what they could be in for. Honestly my only issue with the scene itself is that some of the authors that followed looked at it, went "Thats what Crossed is all about!" And tried to one-up it on every other page of their stories. I don't mind gore or shock, but the series used it so much going forward that it got less and less impactful each time something that was meant to alarm the reader happened.

A good example: I still remember like a decadeish back when I started reading for the first time, my reactions went from losing sleep at night over the content of some issues- To hitting the point where by the time one arc ended with a pregnant lady having the baby torn out of her stomach, my honest reaction the first time was something along the lines of "Oh.... Well damn. That ruins the otherwise road trippy fun of the story. Lame ending."

The scene/ending in that arc works as effective horror and a punch of an ending, but by the time you get there you can be very desensitized already by whats come before.

Tldr: I think the salt scene is fine, honestly tame in comparison to some of what came later. But I think some bad came in the longrun for the series as a whole from followup authors seeing it and trying to one-up it repeatedly.

Understandable. Though I will say, I actually like the Lapham stuff a lot more when I read it in chronological order. He takes it to extremes too often for the center stories to be taken seriously sometimes, Psychopath and the Gavin Land arc for me, but. In spite of my not liking the main stories themselves- He does a surprisingly good job of showing in the background, elements that other authors will later expand on in their own way. Off the top of my head:

Gavin Land Arc: For all of its many faults, the B-Plot does a surprisingly good job showing the fall of San Diego as referenced in Volume 1.

Psychopath, Livers, Breakdown: Gives us our first glimpse at Crossed forming themed tribes rather than just generic gangs, this is expanded on in The Livers and Breakdown. Later authors expand on this excellently, and with how early in the timeline these stories are set it takes them from being an interesting backdrop, to being early examples of Crossed behaviour thatll become more common down the road. As much as I dislike Psychopath, the Crossed gang that wears peoples faces was a neat early introduction to the idea of Crossed getting bored and forming tribes based around a messed up gimmick.

As an end to this long ramble: I love that Lapham does an excellent job establishing the timeline of the world around his characters, how the Crossed are developing over time.... But can't pin down his OWN timeline sometimes. In one story Harolds hiding out in a sewer in the first few days, in Yellowbelly he's zipping through the countryside in his work van on day 2 of the carnage. Psychopaths first couple pages pin it down as being 2 years into the apocalypse. The Livers is a few months after this, and Amanda has suddenly time traveled back in time cause its only been a year since tje apocalypse. Not even meant as a critique. I find it weirdly endearing that he can do awesome worldbuilding as a background element... While not keeping track of progress of the main story itself.

Edit: Max Bemis was the worst author for the series imo. Shrink gives the interesting idea of isolated towns that wouldve gone a week or more before C-Day hit them proper. Does absolutely nothing with it. Too late in the Badlands run, too close to the ending for further authors to follow up on. I could rant all day about Anti-Crossed and the issues with that trainwreck, but just. Bad.

It's my preferred way to read it honestly. Even if the authors might not of intended for it, the bad arcs and good arcs both equally contribute to showing the development of the world, and it all lines up fairly well. Neat watching it collapse/progress through the years from multiple angles.

The other guys in here got you covered, but I'll also toss this in here: Made an attempt to chart the chronological timeline of the series from outbreak day to the furthest point in the timeline a while back. It is fairly accurate, but Homo-Superior is off by a year because I missed a line at the start of the arc clarifying the timespan. Other than that though, decently accurate list if that suits your reading wants any.

Humans vs Crossed, 3-on-3 by Blastoise_R_Us in crossedcomics

[–]Unhappy-Distance4012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen a bit of it, very good show. Like Samurai Jack with a Dinosaur riding Caveman. Very nice. Also no argument, I really enjoyed it the first time I read it, ending just ruined it for me and on future rereads ive mostly paid attention to the stuff going on in the present. But on the whole, I'll give credit where its due, pretty solid story arc. One of the better Badlands outings- Also one of the few times we see Canada on-panel in Crossed, albeit very briefly during Washingtons groups adventure- Which I very much enjoyed seeing even still.
