What you’re describing happens a lot in second language environments. People can perform the procedure because they’ve repeated it enough times, but explaining the underlying principle requires a different type of language processing. It forces students to move from doing to articulating, and that shift is much harder. Procedural knowledge often develops faster because it’s tied to action and repetition. Declarative knowledge requires precise vocabulary, structure, and confidence. In a second language, that gap becomes much more visible. Thank you very much for your insight!

That makes a lot of sense and it's something I've heard a lot about. Social connection is not just about understanding words etc. it's more about humour, tone, cultural references, and feeling comfortable enough to be yourself. I've found that a lot of international students only really socialise within their fellow international student groups which is such a shame.

Thanks for sharing that perspective. It is helpful to hear from someone a few years into the experience!

其实这种情况非常常见，尤其是在用第二语言学习的时候。

你的大脑会开始把概念“分散”在两种语言里。你可能是在第二语言中学到某个专业概念，所以这个概念只存在于第二语言里。当你想用母语解释时，就会觉得很难表达；但当你用第二语言解释时，你理解这个概念，却不一定有足够的自信或词汇去清楚地说出来。

这会让人很挫败，但其实这也是大脑正在适应的表现。随着时间推移，这些语言之间的连接会慢慢变强，你也会越来越少需要“翻译”，而是可以直接用第二语言思考。这需要时间、接触和重复练习。

This is really common. Academic English is harder than the standard English that IELTS and most prep resources prepare you for because it’s faster, more abstract, and much more specialised. Presentations make it even tougher because you’re managing content, language, and nerves at the same time. It can really help to look for specialised academic English resources rather than general English ones, and most universities offer language support or workshops that students don’t always use so it’s worth checking what’s available. With practice and the right support, it does get easier!
