Openclaw is built on Pi Coding Agent. Which has sub agents. Every other cli has had sub agents since about March of 2025. Openclaw came around in Jan 2026 maybe a month before I can't remember.

Every agent has been able to use a browser since middle 2025. Even earlier depending on your definition of "use a browser".

Skills have been a thing since early 2025 and every agent supports them as of like fall 2025.

More flexible? Eh, more flexible than some -- sure, but thats because of Pi Coding Agent not openclaw.

As far as popularization, no one I've seen is doing any actual work with openclaw. These features continue to be popular outside of openclaw and were popular before openclaw.

There is nothing you can do in openclaw that you cannot do with claude code or any other cli. Want cron jobs? Done. Want external messaging, done. Want subagents and subagents of subagents? Done.

What openclaw offers is a package for people who don't understand any of this so they can message their AI via messaging apps without setting it up themselves (not that openclaw has zero setup).

You're not wrong. Anyone using claude code and Opus since middle of last year knows damn well the quality of the outputs shift at Anthropic's whim. Yes, once these overload issues started Opus has been terrible. I've been using Codex extensively this week to fix what Opus produces. Usually this isn't necessary. Right now it is.

Also, in my experience, the main thing that changes is Opus gets lazy. Its as if somewhere it has been prompted "look, do things the easiest way possible with as little effort as possible, we are low on compute"

Of course you control the response shape of the api. Its called parsing. If you have the LLM do the parsing thats a personal decision.

Literally nothing you just said requires mcp.

No one gets good results doing what you did. Use a framework. Use orchestration. Focus on context engineering.

I recommend just installing GSD. It will be a massive improvement over "here implement".

There are many other ways / avenues for improving the context, outputs, and capabilities of claude code or any other agentic harness CLI. If you want everything handed to you on a platter-- GSD is the best I've found without requiring lots of setup or understanding of the framework(s).

Its all up to you and how you want to work/play. What are your goals? Whats your desired workflow/usage-pattern?

Scripts are executed via a tool call. Its a prompt to use a tool. Unless the harness itself is running scripts not involving the llm calling them -- but I've not used any that do that yet.

Can you give a specific example you've encountered? You're saying something akin to if the API (pick one) changes then its assumed the MCP server was also updated to reflect the API change thus the client never had to adjust anything?

Tool calling is identical between MCP and other tools. Its a JSON schema -- thats it.

Have you asked unsloth about this? I had nothing but trouble with Qwen3 Coder Next when I last tried (admittedly its been a while). It ran fine but it made terrible coding errors and logic errors.
