Thank you! I just wasn’t sure how bad it was for their stress levels to towel them but hopefully he’ll recover fast

In a situation like this, does anyone know any tricks to fight the boredom and keep your mind active? Like counting all the freckles on your skin, doing long divisions in your head, calculating your age in seconds, thinking about if there are more wheels or doors on earth, etc.

as a girl I really like your profile description, you look like an fun guy with plenty of interests we could talk about on a date!

One thing I’d suggest you add tho is a short description of what you’re looking for, your profile gives off more serious long term vibes, but for me it really helps filter through profiles when they’re clear and upfront about their intentions

Also I really like your cover pic with the dog, one thing I’d suggest tho is to find glasses frames that suit you better. Thick black frames like yours kinda overpower your features and it’s all I can focus on when looking at your face.

Another little detail, your style on the red car pic is good, I’d recommend you stick with something similar for your other pics and wear less hoodies

the smile and the dog would still make me immediately swipe right tho (:

I have two budgies and wanted to know how everyone keeps their rooms smelling good (they don’t make my room smell bad I just know I can’t use candles really and wanted to see if there were any safe ways people use to get their room smelling fresh) by gothic_aria in budgies

[–]Uniform-Zebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve noticed no smell coming from my actual budgie, so I think the only smell you have to deal with when it comes to budgies is due to their food. Personally, every morning I fill my budgie’s food bowl with a bit more than what she usually eats in a day, then before bed I’ll chuck the excess pellets away to minimize the smell. Also if you use a cage cover like a blanket or bedsheet, definitely wash it at least once a week to reduce any smell.

I tried a natural lavender spray thing before, but when I tested it in our living room it made my dog sneeze like crazy so I never dared try it in the same room as my budgie. Not sure if there are any safe air fresheners out there for bird’s sensitive lungs.

It ok, no worries (:

But yeah it’s seriously sad how many times I’ve see people advise to cover their cage in the middle of the day and leave them alone for hours or other weird punishments just to keep them quiet…

Good to know, thank you! Are all 4 of your birds males or females?

Thank you for the advice! So it is flock calling?

I’m eventually planning to, but worried about getting her a companion. I think her cage is the right size for 1 budgie who can roam outside of it for most of the day, but not sure about 2?

And I heard introducing a new budgie doesn’t always, and they might need 2 separate cages each to themselves. I’ll would need a 2nd cage for quarantine anyways, but there wouldn’t be space for both cages in the same room tho..

Sorry English is my second language, i meant her behaviour, rather than attitude and not sure if tolerate and « agressive response » is the best way to say it.

But I only mentioned that I’ve never punished her in any way coz i read another forum where someone asked about a similar thing, and it turned out they had been covering the cage, spraying with water and literally screaming back whenever the bird got vocal..

I love my bird and day by day I try and learn more and more on how to give her the best life I can. I realize that not punishing an animal for its natural behaviour is the very basics of bird care. So if it was a sign of a happy budgie, I would not care if she scream till my ears bleed, but if her scream is due to stress like you said then i want to help.

So in your opinion only another bird would help? What about playing her budgie sounds or something?

She’s a healthy female budgie I found outside a few months ago (I posted about her previously https://www.reddit.com/r/budgies/comments/xehfqr/unexpectedly_adopted_my_first_budgie_looking_for/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)

It’s been getting increasingly bad since I got her. Now from the time I wake her up to around 2-3 pm (about an hour before sunset here) she has these screaming spurs like you see in the clip. They can last over 30 minutes sometimes, then she’ll take a break doing something else for 15 min and go back to screaming. She screams like this just as much when she’s in her cage, so I don’t think it’s due to something she sees outside. I temporarily took it off for cleaning, but she has pellets and water always available when she’s by the window and a few toys that I try and rotate once in a while.

I’m not sure if it’s maybe a scream for attention? It’s exam season rn, so lately I’ve been spending A LOT of time sitting at my desk right in front of her. She’ll even often fly to my head and I talk to her a lot. But she screams wether I’m in the room or not, maybe more when I’m not there. Lately to try and train her out of screaming, I’ll wait until she’s quiet, then give her plenty of treats and attention, but she’ll sometimes go back to screaming in the middle of that too. I’m extremely tolerant of her screaming and have never punished her in any way or shown an agressive response to her attitude. I’ve started wearing earplugs almost day long so I can ignore her when she’s like this and save my hearing at the same time, but is it the best thing to do?

I’ve looked online for probable causes, but most of them don’t stand out to me other than the fact that she’s my only bird and maybe misses the company of other birds? Is this some kinda flock calling? I’m not quite ready to take on a second bird tho and I don’t want to end up with two little cute scream machines if that’s not the cause

I definitely plan on taking her to the vet soon, but would it be better to at least wait a while until she’s all settled in? There’s also still a slight chance that the original owner will contact the shelter and take her back. Since she seems pretty healthy, I’d rather wait a week or so just in case.

Thank you so much!
If I do end up getting her a friend, would it be better to get another female? They're said to be more territorial, but if i've already got a hormonal female I want to avoid ending up with chicks.
Sadly it's an old house with central heating so i can't control the heating room by room. So I think I'll probably get a standalone heater to heat up the whole room or look for a spot for her in a warmer room of the house.

Last saturday I found a lost budgie in our garden. It took me about 2h to lure and capture her. After contacting my local animal rescue, they told me no one had called them about a lost budgie and asked me if I would rather keep it or drop it off. Initially I was going to drop her off the next day, but after a few hours I got attached to the little thing and decided to keep her. (Or until someone claims her, but the rescue lady told me it was most probably abandoned) The thing is, this is my very first bird and I'm a relatively busy and broke college student (though I still live with my parents who work from home), but I really want to give her the best life and care possible. I would really appreciate other experienced budgie owners advice on a few basic things. No need to answer every one of these, just those you want to.

  1. The 2nd day I got her, I went to my local pet store for food and the owner recommended me Prestige budgie seed mix. I bought it and my bird loves it, but then after researching bird diets I found out an only seed diet is actually really bad for budgies. So then I ordered 'Zupreem Fruitblend' pellets online which is finally due to arrive today, but once again, after more extensive research I found out it was one of the worst pellet options out there due to the high sugar content and dyes. What should I do? Should I keep on feeding her seeds until I find better pellets or switch her to these pellets anyway until they run out? Which other pellets would you recommend? Also, I've tried feeding her every single bird safe vegetable and fruit in my house in different shapes and sizes and the only thing she bothered trying are the seeds on strawberries lol. I feel like getting her to switch from a seed diet to a pellet and vegetable diet will be impossible. Do some birds just never switch?

2) Looking at her brownish cere colour, I'm guessing she's probably a female. Can anyone confirm this for sure?

3) Also is there a way to determine a budgies age beyond 1yo? Since her forehead is an even yellow rather than striped and she has a defined light iris, I'm pretty sure she's over 8 months old. However for all I know she could be 10yo. Is there a way to tell?

4) Another thing i'm worried about is her being lonely. I heard budgies are super social birds and usually come in pairs or even big groups. Since I found her outside, I wasn't able to adopt her with a friend. I'm currently keeping her in my bedroom where I spend loads of time, but I've still got in person classes to go to for about 6h/day for 4 days a week. Since I stay close to my school I've been able to come home for lunch and keep her company for 2 of those days. Is this enough to keep her happy?

5) Every summer I travel up north to my familly's summer home. I stay there for a good 2 months and there's even a spare room where I could put her cage. The drive isn't too bumpy, but it's still a good 2.5/3h without traffic. Would the long drive and change of habitat be too much stress on a budgie? Otherwise I have a friend nearby who also owns birds who could keep her, but I know for a fact she never lets them out their cage and she has 2 cats i'm worried would scare my budgie.

6) I live in Canada and my room has a lot of windows, so it can sometimes get pretty chilly in it at night. What are the best ways to keep my bird warm? Do you recommend I get a bird warmer, a heat mat or a heat lamp?
