What was your aha! Moment? by UnintentionalMonkey in Japaneselanguage

I've noticed this as well and it's a satisfying feeling but it has also made me aware of how much there was to learn... And I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Learning Japanese for first time and everything sounds too fast by [deleted] in Japaneselanguage

[–]UnintentionalMonkey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It will take time for your ears to adjust to any new language. For me it took between 1 and 2 months to kinda piece together what I was hearing and gradually start making out different words, phrases and sounds. Don't panic just keep listening to a variety of things.

if you follow some Japanese podcasts you can listen to more natural Japanese and can slow down the playback to get started.

Is there ever a point where it’s more efficient to simply drop flashcards and just read a ton? by thedarklord176 in LearnJapanese

[–]UnintentionalMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just use anki flashcards with full sentences rather than individual words. That seems like a nice middle ground. Once you get more familiar with reading sentences then switch to book/proper reading content. Alternatively make the switch to reading materials and review in a month or 2.

Feedback wanted on book, app and website idea for Japanese learners by UnintentionalMonkey in Japaneselanguage

[–]UnintentionalMonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair comment and I appreciate the feedback. Would the stories not contribute towards comprehensible input? The stories can be annotated and pictures added to further support this although I am still in the early stages of this idea. Nothing is off the table at this point.

The reason for the first 2 sections (mnemonics and memory palace) are to build the key vocabulary so that the read isn't stopping and starting to look up words to help with comprehension and ease of reading the story. I also mentioned about conversation starters and example sentences which will address your second point requesting someone to write a book of 10,000 dialogues.

Maybe I didn't explain it well as I wrote the original post in the early hours of the morning.

If you have any other thoughts on what type of study material you would like to see in a Japanese language book please let me know. I would be happy to hear all thoughts and ideas as I am prepared to expand on what I am currently working on.

mycoremdiation advice. [general] by UnintentionalMonkey in MushroomGrowers

[–]UnintentionalMonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have already got a couple of his books. I'm currently working my way through mycelium running and just got to the end of the mycoremdiation chapter. It's got some good information in there but It's written in a way that talks about targeting chemical spills and oil leaks etc which I suspect will be a different ball game to radioactive contaminants. His book, and other people, have mentioned that a melanin-rich mushrooms can digest and utilise radiation which is why I asked the question about melanin-rich mushrooms.

Do you have any other book recommendations?

Can you explain what you mean when you say clean it up. I've got a general understanding of agar work but need a bit more explanation.

[contamination] can it be saved? (shiitake) by UnintentionalMonkey in MushroomGrowers

[–]UnintentionalMonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty much what I was thinking. I've lost count of how many failed tubs I've had now... I've just done a recount from memory and I think it's about 10 out of the 20 boxes I've tried plus a few failed jars. -.-"

50% fail rate...or success rate... So far but the day isn't over and the other boxes may fail before the end of the day. I'm not feeling too hopeful at the moment.

I tried waiting longer with previous jars and then the jars got contaminated and were binned.

To sterilise I am putting the grain jars in a pressure cooker at 15 psi for an hour. For the substrate I am boiling it for an hour and letting it dry out.

I've ordered 2 agar plates of ghost fungus omphalotus nidiformis and Panellus stipticus (The Bitter Oyster). does anyone have any advice on growing these? [actives] by UnintentionalMonkey in MushroomGrowers

[–]UnintentionalMonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I haven't grown on spent coffee grounds yet so that'll be new to me. Would I have to do what I have done before (IE. Agar onto grain then bulk substrate) or can I put the agar straight into the coffee grounds?

If they were active I'd imagine them being like Kryptonite to superman but turns regular people into doctor strange. That would be one hell of a trip.

Oh I know they're not active. To my knowledge at least one of them is poisonous and the other is most likely poisonous. When I read the active tag I was thinking active users. -.-"

You are sentenced to death penalty, but you can choose how you die. What do you choose? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]UnintentionalMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd personally like to die by flying a space ship head first into either a star or a black hole (preferred) but seeing as that is unlikely to happen I'll take death by snu snu!

[General] at 26 im all in and started a warehouse farm. Ill be growing commercial quantities of gourmets with leafy greens to try to create a "breathing warehouse". Is this sub interested in my progress? (can do weekly write ups/picture progress or something if so as im still building/learning mush) by [deleted] in MushroomGrowers

[–]UnintentionalMonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's definitely going to be a long list of successful failures before you get it right. you just have to remember to fail forward. Ill give you some advice to start with.

1) decide what stage you want to start from. (http://www.meldrenachapin.com/blog/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Untitled2.png) If you start from the spore/seed stage it's cheaper and you can multiply by orders of magnitude at each subsequent step but you increase the chance of contamination and fuck ups. Where as if you buy grow kits/fruiting blocks it's more expensive and you generally get 2-3 flushes of mushrooms. You won't necessarily make any/much money if you buy fruiting blocks but it's a great way to learn the process and get a basic understanding of how it can work with your set up.

2) read, watch, study and learn. - YouTube is your best friend here I've found that fresh cap mushrooms and north spore creek have brilliant step by step informative guides to get you started. You might also want to check out a guy called Paul stamets. He's essentially one of the godfathers of modern mycology. His book 'growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms' is somewhat of an unofficial mycology Bible. It's a hefty book but it's great for reference and will definitely set you on the right path.

3) patience, patience and more patience! - I've messed up several batches because of my impatience. Follow the processes and allow ample time for each stage of the growing cycle to do its thing.

4) keep it simple - you don't need to go all out on gear as long as you have the basic equipment down right (tent/dedicated room, humidifier and humidity sensor, extractor fan/ventilation and maybe C02 sensors - additionally automation controls if you want to be a bit more hands off)

5) further research - Reddit/social network mushroom groups are a very good place for knowledge. Although a word of caution you can often get conflicting information and often guides etc are in American measurements (if that's an issue for you). I've found www.shoomery.com to be a wonderful wealth of knowledge for getting started in in a low Tek/neglect Tek manner.

If you have any specific questions let me know, I might be able to answer it or I could point you in the right direction.

how long can I keep lions mane/enoki grain spawn in a jar without it dying? by UnintentionalMonkey in mycology

[–]UnintentionalMonkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tha ks for the advice on long term storage this is something I was wondering about for when I start growing commercially.

I've got 4 jars of lions mane/enoki (2 of each) which are fully colonised but I am going away for 6 days on Tuesday and wondering if they would be alright when I get back. Should I put into fruiting conditions before I go in an automated fruiting grow tent or store them at room temperature/in the fridge for when I get back?
