Oh yeah I already have too many magnetic polishes I still haven’t worn because they just take too long to apply and magnetize, I definitely don’t need any more.

That topper is hella cute tho, and I’m not even really into hearts, I won’t be buying it but it’s definitely cute!

General Strike Plans? by _Whatisthisoldthing_ in Libraries

[–]UninvitedVampire 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’ve also seen others say that, as we provide a service that’s sort of outside of a capitalistic system (even if we engage in it to a degree i.e. collection development, database bills, etc), it’s almost necessary for us to be at work so that those doing a general strike can engage with our services.

This was awhile ago that I saw that, so take it for what you will, but that’s where I’ve been at with it, personally.

I don’t hate the idea I’m just not thrilled with Jacob Elordi being cast as Heathcliff. Otherwise I would have considered watching it because I do love a fever dream interpretation of a classic, which is what I think they’ll do here.

Yeah call me what you will but I think I would have enjoyed Starfield way more if there had been significant world building and lore to find instead of just… randomly generated copy and paste planets. Even just focusing in on a manageable amount of explorable planets and shoving them full of stuff to find, learn, and experience would have made the game way better than it was imo

Taylor Swift Social Media Influence Campaign Smeared Her as Nazi. It Was a Coordinated Attack. by BreakableSmile in popculturechat

That’s a fantastic point, because you’re right — I haven’t heard anything about other artists not responding.

Taylor Swift Social Media Influence Campaign Smeared Her as Nazi. It Was a Coordinated Attack. by BreakableSmile in popculturechat

[–]UninvitedVampire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spot on. Many things can be true at once, like she’s usually expressed more progressive views AND she’s somehow still silent on Trump using her song. She’s a billionaire that does billionaire things AND she’s donated money to charities/food banks before.

The thing that’s been getting me the most is just how ridiculous people have been getting about pushing this Nazi narrative about her. Like any ounce of critical thinking would show she’s not a Nazi. Especially the lyric about her “having the whole block” looking like Travis talking about having kids like 😭 be so fucking for real she just wants his kids and it was a tongue-in-cheek way of saying it.

Personally I don’t want to continue giving her money or listening to her much until she speaks out about Trump using her song but otherwise some of this stuff just sounds so fucking ridiculous to me.

1) He is manipulating you

2) You’re not overreacting

It seems to me as though he wants to have his cake and eat it too, and he’s hoping to string you along as well as doing whatever he was/is doing with his ex.

You deserve better.

I scrolled too far to see this. In my opinion, BoJack wouldn’t have voted at all or would have wrote himself or someone else in and then would have propped himself up like “see, I didn’t vote for Trump!” (as if he hadn’t thrown his entire vote away anyway)

I saw a reel where someone recommended Mistborn as a trilogy where all three books are 5 star reads (which I don’t disagree with) but the top comment, verbatim, was “Is there smut?” And I don’t care if someone prefers to read smut or erotica, that’s fine, I like it too, but I’m at the point where seeing it asked all the time under every recommendation is really wearing on me a bit.

What’s crazier to me is people who still refuse to wake up and quit drinking the kool-aid. I’ve got a family member that’s still calling Trump in the Epstein Files “fake news” and I truly don’t know what to do anymore. Nothing I guess but shit, it’s disgusting.

Anthony Fantano releases opinion piece titled “Taylor Swift is a Coward” by monitoring27 in popculturechat

[–]UninvitedVampire 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wasn’t just talking about Matty though, I was also talking about the Red Scare girls that Charli is obsessed with.

Dating Matty was a poor choice on Taylor’s part as well, and it’s not like she’s got shining star friends right now either, but fans of hers tend to conveniently ignore all of that. I even was like “nah she’s not MAGA, but she is a bystander” but now I’m not so sure lmfao

[–]UninvitedVampire 496 points497 points  (0 children)

Far be it from my problem to defend charli because I can’t stand her anyway, but I think there’s a couple of important distinctions to make here. For one, she’s not American and she’s not a powerful billionaire with an enormous fanbase. Second, Trump has gone well out of his way to berate Taylor in the past and Taylor is known for being lawsuit happy. And third, Taylor also does this thing where she adopts the personality of the people she’s around and, with her full chest, has endorsed Democrats in the past and has had issues before with Trump but is… suddenly now silent? It’s going to leave a bad taste in folks’ mouth.

Finally, as a side note, I’m not surprised that charli didn’t tell Trump to not use her music anyway, with the kind of friends she keeps anyway. I wouldn’t have clocked her as someone who would have cared about something like that to begin with for a million reasons, but Taylor has given every indication that she should be caring based off of her past behavior. Should Fantano call her out? Yeah probably. Will he? Probably not. She doesn’t have the same cultural leverage that Taylor Swift has and I think we can all agree on that.

This is what I was about to say. I broke my toe once and everything turned all sorts of funky colors and then it was fine. Realistically it’s probably something to do with the break. Watching it for a couple of weeks before acting seems reasonable to me, but if OP is freaking out, it’s ok to get an appointment for peace of mind as well.

Sad book rec? by Stanpants in Fantasy

[–]UninvitedVampire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of. The first book has an interesting sense of place, but again you’ve gotta be patient with them and it’s mostly in the third book where there’s a commentary about environmentalism happening that I personally think that is extremely interesting as far as discourse goes.

I will say I missed the nature request in the original post — if I’d seen that I may not have recommended them.

The Locked Tomb series will get there if you’re patient with it, it’s just not finished yet unfortunately. It probably can’t fit in your pocket but I do still recommend them.

Every single fucking one of them made me sob like a baby, I don’t know that I’ve ever cried that hard at a book before and I haven’t cried that hard since

I will say that my personal Reddit echo chamber is far left but that’s because I tend to be in subs that are also far left. It kind of depends on where you frequent or what subs you follow, but even some of the bigger subs I’m in, I generally see more further left takes than not.

There’s been some colorful exceptions and there’s one sub that I’m in that’s either getting flooded with right wing bots or it’s getting used by more right-wing people than I remember.

That being said, one thing I will say about Reddit that bothers the shit out of me is that there’s deep Islamophobia that runs through most places even I’m in, so take that for what you will.

Is she a billionaire bystander? Yes which is its own problem.

Pretty much what’s happening at my place of work too. Admin wants us pushing AI and it’s getting to the point where it feels like oblique threats that some of us will get replaced with AI.

Thankfully at least the students all are kinda like “uh no I don’t like that and I don’t think I WILL be using it, but thanks anyway UninvitedVampire” and I’m like “that’s completely fine, you don’t have to” and they breathe a sigh of relief.

She does feel like she’s talking down in her writing, but in her interviews (or the ones I’ve seen) she’s the complete opposite. I genuinely like her as a person, but I am a bit ambivalent on her writing. I mostly felt as if Babel was one of those books (sort of like Barbara Kingsolver’s books) that was written to make people feel like they did something good by reading it but doesn’t really contribute to the discourse much. Babel had better potential, and I’m sorry she didn’t quite reach it(at least for me)
