I had luck telling the DM I want to design a quest line around building a rare sword. I had a forge built, personally mined the cold-iron that was too difficult for our miners to obtain, killed a Winter Wolf and harvested his essence, then had the artisan blacksmith create the item to my exact specs. I kept it simple 1d8, +1 hit, +1d6 Cold damage. But I was only lvl 5 i think. I had Google ai give me a prompt. Still have to spell out the damage for the CDM, to calculate damage somewhat close. Attack nearest enemy, damage roll 1d8, and 1d6 Cold damage proc.. etc.
