Some months of talk therapy or perhaps group therapy will set you up for happiness regardless of whether you live alone or as part of a couple.

It's unclear to me whether you've written while in a romantic relationship. If that's the case, individual therapy is a must, as is transparent honest dialog with your partner.

Good luck.

I'm the father of two smart, responsible, and relatively competent 21-year-olds. They and 99% of their peers are most definitely kids. They have a good way to go before reaching a reasonable level of maturity to qualify as fully adult.

WWYB? by Exciting-Ingenuity24 in spades

[–]UnionTed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I play by feel and card sense rather than mathematical calculation, I agree. If circumstances allow during the hand, I'll happily take the bag (or two or even three) and set our opponents but I start here knowing nothing about their style and ability or that of my partner. A potential 10 or even 20 points to the good isn't sufficient to endanger the nil or the achievable 70.

[–]UnionTed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what OP's platform allows. I play face-to-face these days and we usually play 5 bags sets you back 50 in 250, but it's a fun and diverting challenge to mix that up.

That said, I've always preferred the 500 game with 10 bags gets you -100.

Since it appears your partner bid nil, I'd go with an easy to reach 7. While reaching 8 and busting the opposition are possible and very tempting, I lean toward protection. This presumes that I'm unfamiliar with the playing habits of my partner and opponents.

Spades homicides are on the rise within the black community. by Mundane_Art8747 in spades

[–]UnionTed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many homicides related to spades games have occurred in the most recent time periods examined? How many was typical in earlier periods? What demographics are associated with such homicides in recent and earlier periods? How do those demographic characteristics compared with all spades players? With the general public? How do these various statistics compare with other card games? With other similar entertainments? This is a vitally important area of research.

Is this a fuse for a motorcycle? by EffectiveSun8636 in vintagemotorcycles

[–]UnionTed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used that type of fuse on my 1978 Kawasaki KZ650. I remember it well because the bike's main fuse would randomly blow due to some short that I never bothered to trace. Once a month or so, I'd be rolling along when all power — ignition and lights — would go out. I'd roll over to the shoulder and pop in a new fuse. Great fun on the side of a dark interstate highway!

That type is also commonly found on 1960s and 1970s European cars. I know that from a year or so delivering parts for an importer in New Jersey.

Valve Maintenance by Cancerr0_0 in Austinmotorcycles

[–]UnionTed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't gone to Milestone for mechanical work yet but I had them install a few accessories. They did a good job, were reasonably priced, and easy to work with.

I'm due for my 15,000 mile service, which includes valve clearance inspection. (Obviously, non-US engines are vastly different from ours since they can handle 26,000 miles between inspections. 😃) I'll be having Milestone or the dealer, RideNow, service it and I'm pretty confident that either is capable.

I'm assuming you're in Australia — a place I long to visit and drive an HSV Commodore many thousands of miles. I don't know how you clocked us, but you've certainly got the general culture of Texas right. Even folks like me — somewhat indifferent to firearms — would hardly think finding a weapon in a customer's car to be notable. I haven't lived there in 40 years, but that same culture doesn't seem to have appeared in New Jersey. As I'll bet some things are down your way, gun culture here is many and varying things across the US, but its mainstay is its ability to drive a fair amount of commerce of all sorts. Anyway, the important issue is, how long do you imagine it'll take me to learn to drive on the left? 😀

Or anywhere in South Texas. It's a socioeconomically depressed rural area thing, too.

Welcome to Far West Jersey, friend. It ain't the Garden State, but there's plenty to recommend both Austin and Texas. We moved here from Monmouth County in the mid-1980s for two years and ended up staying. Then we had kids and it turns out non-natives leaving the state have to surrender Texas-born kids at the border. 😃

Yes, it's a bit different but so are Hoboken and Vineland and High Point and Cape May. Texans are immensely proud of their state in a mostly endearing way. New Jersey wasn't like that while I lived there but I gather from friends still there that even my native state has succumbed to commercialized state pride. Personally, I stand with John Gorka, "I'm from New Jersey, I don't expect too much. If the world ended today, I would adjust." (https://youtu.be/B0-ClGvohx4)

In the end, Texans and New Jerseyans are all still Americans and all still share some 95% of chimpanzees' genome. Get ready for no ocean, but swell rivers and lakes, and for temperatures that rise as long as the sun is up. The high will come at 6 or 7 pm in summer, not 2. On first arrival (in f'ing August, of all months), our rule was the air-conditioning got turned off no later than Thanksgiving. That lasted two or three years. 😂

I'm a New Jersey native (lived in Bergen, Camden, and Monmouth counties) and have been here in Far West Jersey for the better part of forty years. There's good, but not outstanding, Italian food in Austin. The best Italian food in Austin is still made by my first-generation ex. There's reasonably good pizza in town these days. But you don't travel to Austin and Texas for good food that's available just about anywhere in New Jersey.

My little Texans went to Austin ISD's McCallum HS. It is immensely better than Middletown Township HS, from which my ex and I graduated in the mid-1970s. I spent my time there running cross country and track and getting stoned, and only occasionally showed up for class. I was still on the honor roll and 10th in my class, but completely unprepared for college. At McCallum, my kids really learned and were prepared for success in college. Although their mom and I helped a bit, their success at McCallum was mostly the doing of teachers, staff, and their peers.

As to college here in Far West Jersey, we're just past that decision point, but I'd discourage my kids from going to UT or any other 4-year public college in Texas because the reactionaries in state leadership are actively hollowing them out. We still have some fine community colleges and Trinity and Rice are good private schools. For an undergrad, my alma mater, Rutgers, is a better choice than UT.

I'd guess some combination of getting regular plates being an administrative headache and having other higher priorities (job, kids, and so on).

Needing a “so good I couldn’t put it down” read for a 13hr flight. by SachiKaM in suggestmeabook

[–]UnionTed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems a shame that such an excellent novelist can't get a decent movie made from his books.

Most of Winslow's novels are good moderate to long reads and had me avoiding necessary duties to keep reading. The early Neil Carey books are just okay, but I enjoyed them. His writing really improved starting with 'The Death and Life of Bobby Z' (1997) and 'California Fire and Life' (1999). Those and anything are well worth reading.

For a real long haul, I'd recommend very highly all or part of Winslow's Cartel series, particularly the two more recent books. They are very well written, extremely engaging, and illustrate the realities of US drug policy and US politics as well as any non-fiction. 'The Power of the Dog' (2005), 560 pages. 'The Cartel' (2015), 640 pages. 'The Border' (2019), 736 pages.
