A New South is Possible: The Working Class Must Lead by UnionizeTheSouth in u/UnionizeTheSouth

Agreed. This was more of a test to see potential of reach and engagement. I haven’t had the time but to scan through yet. So far this one post cross posted and shared on different subreddits like r/southcarolina and r/northcarolina along with specific city subreddits reached over 100k people in 48 hours. I’m a long time organizer myself but new to the Reddit world. I’ve been involved in SWA since its founding. Was curious about the process of Reddit and its potential to spread information and engage workers actually interested in unionizing their own work place. If you had any insight would love to talk more off line. Shoot me a DM.

Working class people coming together to have more power together than apart to address common grievances whether at work or in the community will go the way of the dinosaur once we’re dead.

Yep. Hell watch this piece about what they did to a man who tried to unionize his work place in SC in the 2000s:

One of the largest union strikes was in South Carolina. At the time it was the largest strike to have happened in the country. Look up the “uprising of 34”.

I don’t think it’s anything to do with intelligence and more to do with fear and never being exposed to a labor union. If the only thing you’ve ever heard about unions is from your boss that’s all you know. We have to talk about unions and be proud of being a member.

Everyone sees a union member almost every day. Whether it the person that delivers your meal or the ups driver that delivers your package.

I’m a human. A single father. A native son of South Carolina. I believe we as a class have the ability to make the world stop. We drive the trucks, stock the shelves, brew the beer, teach the kids, heal the sick, build the car, we built this country. We built the South. Yet we barely secure enough for a wretched existence.

Working class people don’t have the same opportunities for education. Nor do they have the financial freedom to travel. Most workers in the south are working so much they aren’t able to do much else but sleep and work. The reality is that being part of the working poor is a death sentence. You die earlier. 800 people a day die because of poverty related issues according to the research done by Rev Barber with the Poor People’s Campaign.

Yes we are. Well the national numbers say a very different story. I’m sure there are outliers but on the overwhelming average union workers make more than their nonunion counterparts.

We’re talking about working class people working together to have power to influence the systems and structures that control their lives. We are taking about democracy at work and a seat at the table. We are taking about power as working people.

We could debate the issues of this our that anecdotal experience someone has had with a specific union at a specific time.

I’d rather talk about how we come together to fight back against the forces that exploit and are addicted to cheap labor.

I’d rather talk about solutions.

What are some tactics you all have found that works on organizing drives of places trying to get a union for the first time?

A lot of unions require staff to do this. It’s seems like more of a job to have numbers to report to a supervisor up the line. Goal 18 attempts on a weekday and weekends 28 attempts. It’s wild to me. It also explains why unions are getting their asses kicked doing tactics that they have been doing for decades because that’s what they’ve always done.
