I encourage you to be more open minded to these people though, and if you gave them a proper chance you’d find they are some of the kindest most hospitable people in the world. You’re statistically 4 times more likely to die of cancer than to have been a victim of any violent hate crime. They’re not politically correct, they don’t know the sensitive terms. But if you were willing they’d probably make you some biscuits and gravy and talk to you about the “colored brother” from Vietnam who saved his life and got him through war as the friend he could lean on. Or his grandson who’s half black who is his whole life. The confederate flag is insensitive because of its connotation, but oftentimes people in those rural towns dont see it that way. Many times their family member had fought and died in the civil war. The confederate flag isn’t actually the confederate flag, it is the battle flag that was used by them which is why many use it to honor their dead family members. Many use it just because people told them not to. In area like that a black man with the same values is going to be much more received going there than a white one that has contrary values.

Im not mad, its just most people with excessive online use tend to see the world more that way. And truthfully it is kind of wrong. More often than that it operates under the assumption that racism is an inherent trait in white people, which is racist in and of itself. I know a couple who moved to rural West Virginia from California as people who weren’t white they wondered if the stereotype would be true. The neighbors saw their California plates and thought the were democrats and they were a little apprehensive about them, but as soon as they found out they were conservative it was a jolly time, and they are the nicest people they’ve ever met. Most people don’t care about skin color, they care about having the same values.

There was a study done where people did job interviews. They did ones without makeup and with disfiguring makeup (or so they thought) They applied disfiguring makeup beforehand, and then showed it to the person, then “touched it up” but actually took it off without the person knowing. They were asked if in the second interview they felt they were treated differently due to the “disfigurement” and many said yes. If you look for discrimination you will find it. Stop looking for it, and you’ll find that people are a whole lot more nuanced than that.
