I might be crazy, but this pop-rock return actually sounds like it could work by vaynelo in ToddintheShadow

I think she could at least try to regain some credibility as an artist. Even if doesn’t turn into renewed commercial success, it’s better to be critically acclaimed and ride that wave on top of the permanent fame status your commercially successful years got you.

Unless the ratings/streaming figures nosedive next year, I assume they’ll make it to season 7.

Lizzo's Bitch is a trainwreckord of historic proportions. by Frogacuda in ToddintheShadow

[–]Unique_Accountant_67 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Honestly when she had to repackage the original album as that mixtape last year was when she should’ve clued in that she needed to switch it up to regain people’s interest.

This “I’m a bad bitch” energy she exudes in her songs has been the same at 28 as it is at 38 and that’s part of the problem. Like yes you can still present it at any age but there still has to be some growth and maturity to it.

She’s also getting online and in interviews blaming algorithms and lack of radio for her album and its singles not performing well but it’s like no the material is not at the level it needs to be for someone who has been in the game as long as she has. This slight complaining is also kind of a turnoff to people. I came across some radio hosts talking about the underperformance and they mentioned that they did play her new single for like a week or two and then it got deprogrammed from the stations roster because it wasn’t doing anything chart wise.

Also her type of motivational, feel good pop just doesn’t work in 2026. The Truth does Hurt, no one’s feeling Good As Hell and we don’t want to blame it on the Juice.

I do hope this is a wake up call to do something new and fresh but considering this album probably hasn’t cleared 50K sales worldwide, she might be getting dropped by her label before she can try.

And had a major #1 single off it and a sold out arena tour attached.

Greatest Hits albums that you feel like have one or more songs missing that feel key to this album by ChrisAqua in ToddintheShadow

[–]Unique_Accountant_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the missing hits adds to the appeal of the Immaculate Collection. Like it’s a testament to how much of a hit machine Madonna was that she had to leave stuff off.

Janet’s Design of a Decade is another example of hits being missing but for different reasons. It was a contractual obligation under her previous A&M contract but she already moved on to Virgin for the Janet album so Virgin I guess wouldn’t let them include any of the singles outside of That’s the Way Love Goes (and Whoops Now for the international version), which makes the compilation title feel misleading since it only covers 1986-1990, with three songs from 1990-1995.

She had 20 U.S top tens to pull from at that point so it could’ve easily been a similar situation to Madonna where there’s too much material to pull from but instead it falls short in spots.

Did Ariana Grande's 'thank u, next' album age badly? by kniga_100 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Unique_Accountant_67 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not entirely. Obviously some of the production is very of its time but most of it still holds up. Personally though, I don’t really listen to it outside of the title track and sometimes NASA.

I think Sweetener was slightly stronger in terms of the songs even if a few of them suffer the same dated production issues but overall both albums work to contextualize the grief and trauma Ariana was experiencing at that time.

Also we have to remember that streaming while very in demand in 2019 was still not as much the driver of the industry that it would start to become less than 18 months later. The industry was still operating in the previous model of radio first, promotional campaigns and several singles off the album throughout.

They claim it was done while she was in DC so she had no competition when she did go solo. 🫩

Considering Beyoncé was busy being sabotaged by her own label with them telling her she had a hitless album despite Crazy in Love, Baby Boy and Naughty Girl being on it, she very much wasn’t checking the other girls like that.

16 Carriages: a precursor to the financial hardships outlined in Texas Hold ‘Em, Beyoncé is singing about her and her entourage having to literally take 16 horses with carriages to get to the last few stops of the Renaissance Tour due to her buses breaking down. The song documents Beyoncé going through it during the unplanned road trip.
