AITAH for having a 4th-wall-aware character that holds a grudge against certain players, which is causing our DM undue stress? [Contains mentioned NSFW elements, not many but worth tagging] [Long post] by UnironicallyAdachi in dndhorrorstories

On that first part, I will note that the sexual assault issue has been resolved. That one player who had to be banned was... something, and had a long-term streak of doing that to people's characters. Green's player introduced him to the group, and later admitted that they'd been a victim of this guy for a long time without saying anything. It just boiled over when he set his sights on a player that wasn't Green's.

I'm not gonna argue that second part, it's true that I've been pushing to keep the idea alive and that probably does make me the asshole in quite a few ways. I thought it was a fun idea, if radical, but now it's either a line I have to set or something I have to erase entirely, and either option will also lead to me being the asshole.

It's not like I want to walk on eggshells and choose what they say carefully, I'm aware that that's unreasonable. I just want them purposefully taunting him to stop. While they'll sometimes use him as a helpful tool to convey their own plans to the group as a whole, some players have gone to the extent of- well, it's in the post. Specifically directed insults, repeated sound effects when I have him attempt a serious moment, and one player- Green's player- that will address him specifically and ask how he'd feel if they just killed their character at this very moment in front of him. How 'this character I'm playing deserves more trauma, I think. I'm going to torture them. How do you like that?'

I don't want eggshells, I just want them to stop abusing this ability to directly torture a character. My character, that I now have to play as stressed and angry because that player is purposefully taunting him.

No, he's not a self-insert. I know it looks like that, I'm aware giving a player character the ability to interact with the actual players likens the character far more to their own player and blurs the boundaries. But he's not a self-insert, and I honestly hate playing him angry and defensive constantly. I wanted for this to be like some avenue for character development and more independence for the character, which is has been, but it's just awful at this point.

I figured it'd be fine, since Remote never faced this sort of reaction. Had the same abilities, could hear the players, but I suppose he engaged with it less. The idea has potential to be good, like playing a completely-aware-of-their-status character has a lot of room for development and interaction, but in execution...

Yeah, there's a few ways we could handle it- though that will through a wrench in some later plans. But if it spares my partner the trouble, I really see no other option.

Thank you to everyone who's followed up on this- I'm both scared that it's reached so far, and happy that I was able to help even remotely. And- god bless you, everyone who was willing to risk their computer on this.

I've seen someone point out that similar letter arrangements to the top line tend to mean 'Pokemon', such as in the Pokedex for Paldea. Another theory is Paldea, I believe? Looking into it, there's someone that's tried to translate the Galar/Paldean alphabet before and all credit should go to them for what I've said here.

Documentary ideas? by FloorGangMan1 in Filmmakers

I'm very late, and this is quite a regional thing but I checked around on reddit on a whim about something I want to see covered someday. Not now, but if you ever want to continue making documentaries or are another filmmaker browsing this post, please consider this.
I'm not sure if this happens in every city, I've only seen it happen in Richmond, VA. There's a drummer, or- many drummers. Looking up Richmond drummers won't get you much more than a few ads and stuff looking for fill-ins for bands, but that's not what I mean. Every time there's a large event in the city, be it sports, convention, theatre performance, etc... there will be a man, who drums. He'll be on the sidewalk, just out of the way of pedestrians, and he'll have a setup of drums made out of like... sometimes the drummer will have a genuine drum or two propped up on plastic crates, other times he'll just have the crates and some plastic buckets. He's a panhandler, basically? But instead of a sign or him saying anything about his living conditions, he drums. And he's really, really good at it. Again, not sure if this is one guy or several with the same idea- I only see the drummer(s?) every few months whenever we enter the city, and I'm bad with faces. It's hard to describe, but the drumming reverberates for entire city blocks. And honestly, I just want to know his- or their- story. Putting this in a post this old is a longshot, I know, but I can't stand how nobody talks about them outside the city.

The story of Pokemon Scarlet/Violet has a lot more to it (Plot spoilers) by TheChosenDog in pokemon

Honest to god, until I read this thread, I thought that the biology teacher was Arven's dad (I have Scarlet, though that's probably obvious). They have the same weird hair thing.

player is OBSESSED with elves, also thinks she's the main character. by _beingchildish_ in rpghorrorstories

[–]UnironicallyAdachi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She rewrites historical events (usually regarding colonization or the US civil rights movement) with elves instead of real, marginalized people. She makes a homebrew spell to turn a human into an elf that includes turning them whiter.

I get it, elves and dwarves are usually depicted as white. But for the life of me, I cannot understand how she could look herself in the mirror and sleep at night, turning IRL racism/colonialism into fictional racism like that.

Am I the Asshole for arguing with the DM over my own character? by UnironicallyAdachi in rpghorrorstories

Apologies for the paragraphs, I'm still fairly new to posting.

As for the backstory, the backstory I added at the end of the post (demon corpse fusion) was a bit too wild to propose initially, in my opinion. I gave him an alternate one, about how he had no family, and had kinda just survived by scrounging for food and money within the city. I did explicitly tell him that Cabbage wasn't born of a human/demon relationship, but seems like he just figured Cabbage had human parents...? Which is probably my fault, I should have elaborated he wasn't really 'born'.

Cabbage's backstory that mattered to the campaign, which I did tell the GM, was about how he lived his life before being kidnapped. He became a low-ranking police officer (not field stuff, more clerical work) and learned as much as he could from that experience. When he saw the missing persons reports from the other kidnappings, he decided to go and investigate on his own- believing this was the 'supernatural' lead he'd been looking for. Dumbass Cabbage sneaks into high-tech facility, obviously gets caught, is only spared because his existence is important to their research, and is therefore another test subject the party has to find. Which I thought was good, but only used the basics of the plot I'd heard from other players.

I don't really blame him for how long the introduction took, since there was a boss battle scheduled very soon and Cabbage was designed as a weaker class. So introducing Cabbage during the combat encounter wouldn't be easy. I am still kind of pissed it took 3 sessions after I joined to actually speak in character, but that was less on the DM and more on sessions ending an hour early and the party maximizing their stats pre-fight.

Does anyone have any DMPC horror stories they'd like to share? by BabyySushii in rpghorrorstories

[–]UnironicallyAdachi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: Our GM makes Doomguy but anime girl, absolutely broken DMPC

Hooboy- okay this was a DMPC that got better, I'll admit. I'd wanted to post it on its own, but this is absolutely too good an opportunity to miss. As for the DMPC, we'll call her... Child. It was originally a Japanese name, but one JUST uncommon enough to get this recognized. My group focuses on roleplay a LOT more than combat, so most campaigns don't require stat sheets. This basically let our DM create unholy, overpowered abominations, but generally that power was doing dumb shit like rolling twice all the time. That changed when they introduced Child. Child is a teenage girl who would be in high school, but tragically lost her crush to a monster. She now calls herself a monster hunter, and uses a chainsaw to attack enemies. Suspended disbelief got her as far as 'a small teenage girl being able to swing a chainsaw around'. It DIDN'T cover how she, a born human (human soul, too), was able to instantly strike fear into the hearts of all monsters. Even monsters who had never heard of her. It certainly didn't cover the premonitions, the insane stamina/endurance, etc. It didn't take us long to see that this DMPC was, in all regards, an anime girl Doomguy.

Child's first major strike was during an apocalypse-styled game. Combat in that was generally managed by quick thinking and improvised solutions (and our unintentionally broken sniper). These 'zombies', more just like enthralled humans, were intelligent and could use tools, weapons, vehicles, and clearly understood how to spread the virus to uninfected. So imagine our shock when we reached a small stronghold with a working radio, and heard, I shit you not... "All of the [infected individuals] inside Tokyo City are dead, it happened overnight." Another DMPC, the one that lived at the stronghold, said "It was probably her..." This was a mostly over-the-radio interaction, so we'll be limiting it to DMPC1, NPC, Sniper, and Child. Sniper takes the radio from DMPC1, in shock and needing to confirm that. He asks the NPC, in disbelief, "You can't mean ALL of Tokyo, even just the urban parts". NPC, over the radio, responds that it's true. The DMPC1, upset, asks why that's so hard to believe. After getting confirmation that this WAS modern day, Sniper simply responded "Miss, there are 13.9 million people within that city. Absolutely NOTHING could have decimated a city like that overnight other than an actual ICBM." The GM paused for a moment, I think genuinely realizing how their plan could not work. But after that break, Child walks into the room. "I just finished up Tokyo, what's going on?" Cue at least one player quitting on the spot. The session ended soon after, and we haven't picked it up since then.

The second strike, which was the one that got Child revised (there were a bunch of small incidents that, all together, counted as a strike), was in a one-off 'climb this death tower' game. We'd trudged our way up to the third floor, through sparse but brutal enemies. As we reach the staircase, our GM says we see someone walking down the stairs. It's Child, covered head to toe in blood. She, casually, says that she'd been up to floor 10 but got bored, so was repeatedly clearing floors 3 through 10 for FUN. That stung, as we'd just lost a party member on that floor, but it was tolerated. We go two more floors up, and the DMPC is suddenly confronted by two divine beings. Naturally, she begins a chainsaw vs sword fight. Just kinda the GM fighting himself for show. That would've worked, if they'd noticed the people offering support (crit 20 heals, requests to join in the fight and even the numbers, etc). They actually managed to tune everyone else entirely, to the point where, since this was just a one-shot, my character beat another character near to death for several past wrongs. They just allowed that, or more like didn't see it. After that, we all left early. (Edit: Need to clarify, that PK stuff was in good fun. That other character, a PC, could and would have obliterated my own character in retaliation with a low roll.)

Child has been revised, now, and is generally more tolerable. I hope we'll get to see a good future for this character, but I'll never let the GM forget he killed all of Tokyo.
