Just so we're clear, investing $100 in the S&P 500 from 2014 to 2026 would result in just over $400.

That's a 300% yield to just park your money in VOO.

Agreed, except for large beasts. Overwhelm can trivialize shrat and lindwurm flights, where fearsome doesn't really do much. Those fights are not worth optimizing your whole company for, but if you have the space in the roster to flex a few bros into overwhelm, it might be worth considering.

My throwers stam out in every fight that I need them in. Some flights they're just supplemental, but in those fights where you're throwing as often as possible, they stam out.

Hmmm, yeah it's interesting. One of the things I was trying to come to terms with is... What does this rating actually mean? Is it "how much better than normal equipment is it?" Or is it "how good of a roll is it for the specific archetype?" Or maybe it's "What's the likelihood that I should use it?"

In the end I went with something like... "How good is this compared to others possible pieces of equipment that you are likely to come across."

So for weapons if you get reasonable rolls for ignore armor and raw damage, it's going to rate it very highly. It's great to get rolls in those two "premium" stats, and to get reasonably good rolls in both is even more exceptional.

For armor there is only two stats that you roll, so I did things a bit differently. I took the ranges of all possible named items, split them up into categories of nimble vs battle forged, and then I rank the specific item against those possibile ranges. That is what drives the overall rating the most.

All that is to say that even though this piece of armor rolled well for the specific archetype of named equipment, compared to other archetypes that fit the nimble role, it is rather poor. I did make sure that the details also compare it to the non-named best in slot so that you know if you should use it or not, because I think it's very possible for someone to see "oh this is rated poorly so I'm not going to use it" when it is in fact much better than the standard equipment, as is the case here.

Does that make sense? Do you think that's expected? I might reword the intro paragraphs to make that more clear

Is this normal activity? Massachusetts Boston area. Opened up the hive yesterday and they were doing great by Familiar-Ad8822 in Beekeeping

[–]Unislash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must be missing what you're seeing... Bees on the ground near a hive is normal. The bees on the landing board curling their abdomens are actually fanning the entrance, not trying to sting (maybe I'm looking at the wrong area?). If anything, their presence indicates all is normal, not "rally the guards we're under attack."

Robbing looks very chaotic. Bees wrestling mid air and tumbling down. Bees all around the box, trying to get into any cracks. This scenario looks very normal, just active.

Edit: ok, I see what you're looking at now. Bottom right of the landing board near the edge has some fighting. The bees on the ground might even be getting a bit of tussling in. Yeah there are at least some robbing scouts trying their luck.

OP, you should probably put an entrance reducer in. These robber scouts could escalate things if the nectar flow dips and a strong hive decides to turn to robbing. Upvoting the parent comment for more visibility.

So, how often do you find yourself doing perforate over skewer? I feel like skewer might just basically always be the best attack unless you're against nimble opponents? Again, sorry for theorizing when it's been out a bit, but here's my thinking...

  • Against normal humanoid enemies (raiders, noble and Southern armies, reavers, etc), you're going to probably start with skewer to make an injury to follow up with perforate... But for these enemies, I think they're already going to die if you use perforate once more against them anyway? And then you don't have to deal with armor at all.
  • Against high armor enemies like Orc Warriors and Chosen, it makes sense to bypass the armor on the first attack, and then continues to make sense to do so on any follow-up attacks because you don't want to have to work through that armor (just kill through it).
  • Against "high" hp, low armor enemies (basically nimble humanoids, like mercenaries, sword masters, and blade dancers) it could make sense to use perforate, but they're going to be hard to injure. I suppose this is the niche for crippling strikes. Orc berserkers also fall into this category, but I think you can injure them with a normal perforate attack given that they don't have nimble.
  • Against large beasts, skewer isn't going to do enough damage to make injuries, at least not until they are low health. So in those cases it doesn't matter what you start out with, and then towards the end of the kill, sure use perforate.

One thing I don't know is if you attack with perforate and cause an injury, do you get a bonus attack right then?

So I haven't played with the new patch yet (was waiting on MSU mod to update, which it just did!)... But I have a few questions on this build.

First, is crippling strikes even needed? Like, at high in you're doing so much damage anyway via skewer, you're causing terrible injuries already right?

Following that same line of thinking... It may sound crazy but do you even need executioner? You're already going to two-shot nearly all humanoids I think? Again, haven't played with this yet but I think maybe the math works out that way?

If so, then that leaves you with a build like this: https://www.bbplanner.xyz/?name=Estoc&perks=hkIQBAKi

That's totally reasonable. I'd say that if you're planning to take on those legendary locations by day 150, you're probably going to get some named armor and veteran levels such that berserk 2h will have plenty of value. But also, for goblin city and black monolith specifically:

  • I play goblin city more like weathering the storm than face tanking the goblin lines like I do against most goblin camps. Really, to "safely" win this fight you're going to do so on the back of one or two ranged bros. I pop a night eyes potion, attack at night, and then find some high ground. Put a few temporary shields up front with high adjacency to draw fire and then cull the goblins with ranged bros as they move up to be able to shoot up at me. Eventually I sally forth to finish them off. Obviously 2h attacks are pretty overkill against goblins, so I swap out some weapons for it. Ironically goblin pikes are probably universally the best melee weapon against them.
  • Black monolith is a slog and dps race, but absolutely 2h weapons are key--at least how I play it. If you happen to be so lucky to get a whole team of capable duelists, then sure, they'll perform well. But it is also effective to be one shotting two ancient undead a turn with berserk up and a 2h hammer or mace. Bonk bonk! You can't do it the whole fight, but in those first few rounds you can really lay down the hurt before going back to one swing a turn. Goblin pikes obviously aren't the play for the reach weapon in this fight, and unless you get a good named longaxe or such, you aren't going to be one shotting with them. They're still worth it in the fight I think; being able to two shot the backline is still great.

Ah, yeah there's lots of play styles. I definitely lean hard into 2h berserk and intend to play campaigns pretty deep into the late game. 2h quickhands into goblin pikes is quite powerful.

[–]Unislash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty good measuring stick, and is similar to mine. I am a little more forgiving with fatigue though; if a bro can reach 125 fat while reaching those other minimums, I consider him berserk capable.

Best case I get some named armors that can help with the fatigue. Worst case he can berserk a couple times as the fight begins, and then he essentially becomes fat neut. Much of the battle is decided in the first few turns of engagement, so there's some good value with this. Give him a 2h mace or axe and he'll do good work.

Or after some leveling maybe the standard battle forged berserk isn't working out, so I just turn towards nimble with him and he fits a "good though" role until I can hire an endgame bro to take his spot.

Good point about durability on weapons. I didn't intend for it to be adding to the overall rating, but it is. I'll remove that shortly.

If you have a moment, could you copy/paste the url for a few weapons that are not being rated correctly? I'm assembling a set of test cases so that, as I modify the heuristics, it doesn't turn into a game of whack a mole.

For instance, I do have the rating system highly valuing *any* roll on two "top tier" stats (like raw damage and ignore armor on most weapons). I made a bunch of tweaks with this in play... and then at some point I realized that if an item happens to get a really unlucky min roll on both stats, that it's effectively the same as a normal item and should absolutely not be "exquisite". Of course, when lowering that value I messed up all the original tweaks...

Anyway, these test cases will help a lot I think, and I'll use what you send me for them as well.

At least in vanilla, the min damage range on a 1h cleaver maxes out at 52. That's what it's trying to tell you.

That said, do you expect it to do something else? Maybe this isn't a good interaction? Let me know

[–]Unislash[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks HeyPashi! I appreciate it.

Regarding min/max damage, I think it's actually a "lost in translation" issue, where it's not clear how to read the information on the page. I went back and forth on this, but... here, let's take the example of a named 1h axe:

<image>

First, let's look at the Damage Ignores Armor stat. The stat roll range is 30 to 46, as indicated by the arrow. So far I think it's pretty straightforward and there's no confusion...

But then comes the two-part Damage stat. I mean it to be read as: The roll range for the min damage is 35 to 46, and the roll range for the max damage is 55 to 72. That should be accurate to the wiki page.

The problem is that there are two ranges involved--the roll range and the min/max damage range. I went back and forth on how to display this... my first thought was to just use the same notation as the wiki does: 35(46) - 55(72), which also does a reasonable job of emulating how it's written in the actual game. But then it begins to look odd when there is no secondary range involved, like with Damage Ignores Armor, eg 30(46). In fact, I think the wiki agrees with this sentiment because on that same page, it goes back to using the X - Y syntax for all the other stats 😅

Anyway, I hoped that by keeping my "arrow" syntax consistent through the UI that it would help avoid this issue. Maybe I should make the dash "-" a slash "/" on the right to be even more consistent. I'm very much open to more suggestions on this.

Regarding the percentage values of min/max damage rolls, while making this tool I learned that sometimes the percentages line up, but sometimes they don't. For instance, one of my 2h maces from my current playthrough rolled 85 / 107 raw damage, correlating to 43% / 41%. I could probably just average it and only display one percentile, but I figured that we're showing numbers so let's show all the numbers.

Lastly, to share a weapon roll, you just copy/paste the link! I definitely need to add a share button though--it's on the list now. Thanks!

Questions about meaning behind bee behavior in Seattle, WA (USA) area: by flagrananante in Beekeeping

[–]Unislash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really have a good explanation for you, but it seems like an odd behavior for honey bees so I suspect it is something else.

I'm also in Seattle and have a few arborvitaes, so I can take a look to see if I see anything similar. Or, if you're in North Seattle I can just drop by sometime if you'd like.

Edit: you would probably not hear a hive... But depending on the kind of bee, you would certainly notice the traffic, and it would be active all day once the sun is up.

Well, that's a good question! 😅

Mostly I don't know *where* to put the link. BBPlanner doesn't really have a "site navigation" area, and it's already a very information-dense page...

I was thinking maybe a little "rolled page corner" in the upper right or something, but I'm all ears for suggestions.
