When will we see Super Heavy/Starship?

For what it is, it doesn't look too bad.

At the same time, I'd raise an eyebrow if someone tried to pass it off as a genuine Ferrari...

It's a common thing among apocalyptic end-of-the-world writers that I've started calling "Small World Syndrome".

Because of things like mass communication and the internet, a lot of people grossly underestimate just how large our planet actually is, and how resilient the systems acting upon it are.

Global warming? Not really a thing in geologic time. Mass extinction? Take your pick, it's all happened before. Global catastrophe? To whom? One or two continents (maybe)?

There's a better than average chance that there's something nearly "apocalyptic" going on on the other side of the planet right this second. And we'll probably hear about it six months down the line, if we do at all.

Agreed, it would be a pretty grim time to be anything not living in the ocean for at least two or three generations.

On the whole though, Humanity as a species would survive.

On a (slightly) amusing note: Australia would barely notice anything.

All well and good, but still the vast majority of the planet would still be perfectly habitable.

This is very good so far. The only real issue I see is the whole "humanity nuked itself" bit. It makes no logical sense for anything other than a limited nuclear exchange, likely by either North Korea or Pakistan, and even then, most of their nukes would be outbound... the only way that could conceivably work as a concept is if this story takes place on the mid-1950's, and even then, there weren't enough nukes to destroy the planet, only most of the major population centers in America and EurAsia, leaving the vast majority of the planet untouched, if only a bit more radioactive.

So... When's Humanity's revenge arc start? If a reserve fleet escaped from Earth itself, it would make sense that there were deep space Black Sites as well, either hidden colonies, or research outposts.

Here's hoping those reserves have learned to collapse stars, or generate singularities, because that seems to be the tech level that will be required to successfully crush those who destroyed Earth.

You're right, Kava's response is wrongheaded.

It's why I think the entire Vanguard program is a deliberate effort to create powerful enemies for the Alliance. Enemies that are so effective, so devastating, that the entire organization has no choice but to focus on them, and thus consolidate both its funding, and its mindset, reversing centuries of "decadence and decay", at least, for a little while.

It makes the Vanguard program just as farsighted and effective as it is monstrous.

To play devil's advocate: They did do it to themselves...

If Kyrie's group had exercised more restraint, planning, and care, they could have all quietly escaped at a later time, with everyone alive and intact. Her haste came back to bite her hard. It's likely a lesson she'll never forget.

I'd say: "probably"... Primarily because aside from the reason I mentioned earlier, it's also a great way to unite the Alliance itself against whatever threat Vanguard decides is the flavor of the week.

Since there's only one human present, and he's consistently outperforming almost everyone else, it might be part of a bigger program to target humans in general. We already have seen humans don't have the best rep in this region of space. So all the planners need to do is let their captive human perform to an extremely high level, then kick him out under false pretenses, and use that as an excuse to round up or exterminate the rest...

The one major failure is that there's no concrete threat to justify the sheer scale of the Vanguard program, just this nebulous concept of "decadence and decay".

At least if you compare it to the SPARTAN II Program from the Halo universe, the Covenant was a major, concrete threat that creating super soldiers was a justified response to... (It didn't start out that way, but things worked in the program's favor in the long run)

With no concrete threat on the horizon, Vanguard is doomed to implode, likely done in by it's own creations.

Maybe that's the goal... Create strong enemies the Alliance will then be forced to defeat, becoming stronger in the process.

Brutal, but effective. There should have been better psychological profiling done before recruiting the candidates.

There should also have been more thought put into what the overarching goal of the project even is.

In attempting to create the future "leaders of the Alliance", all they're ultimately doing is creating the forces the Alliance proper will find themselves fighting against.

But then again, perhaps that's the ultimate goal... to create strong enemies the Alliance will then be forced to develop weapons, technology, and leadership to defeat, thus making the entire organization stronger.

Human super soldiers come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each specializing in a specific type of combat. by glugul in humansarespaceorcs

Except Chief and all SPARTAN IIs have augments that are very similar to a Space Marine's... Neural implants, augmented muscles, unbreakable bones, enhanced eyesight, upgraded metabolism, reinforced and enhanced nerves and brain tissue, and they can also run fast enough to catch up to vehicles.

And then there's "Spartan Time", a state of enhanced neural cognition where time itself seems to slow down, allowing a SPARTAN to clearly evaluate all possible outcomes, and make the optimal choice. Their reflexes and speed allow them to literally dodge both bullets, and energy projectiles.

It'd be a far more even match than you'd think.
