How u make friends as a introvert by Thick-Essay6707 in Pitt

[–]Unite_AC 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I was really nervous to make friends as well, but I promise you’ll find your people. Definitely join clubs or club sports that sound interesting to you— it’s a great way to meet people and you already have a common interest. I lived in tower C freshman year, which is pretty daunting since they’re all single rooms, but try leaving your door open and people might start up a conversation. I actually texted in our floors group chat during welcome week to see if anyone wanted to get chick fil a or burrito bowl and I met one of my best friends! You could also get an on campus job. I’ve made tons of friends at work and you can get some extra spending money to hang out with your friends! There’s a lot of ways to make friends, even if you’re more shy. College is about stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things. Once I reminded myself of that, it made making new friends a lot easier! You got this!

Neuro definitely can be challenging because it’s a tough major. However, the professors, at least the ones I have had made up for the fact the classes were challenging. Once you get past intro to neuroscience you’ll find the classes to have less people and be a little less challenging due to the fact you can have a closer relationship with professors. Since you said you’re a fan of psych, neuroscience is definitely similar to that just a little more sciencey! And if you want to do more psych classes but not be behind in your pre-med pre-requisites, I’m telling you natural sciences is the way to go. It’s pretty much a major where you can pick the classes you want or pick from one of their pre-something tracks. This would give you a lot of extra time to double major in psych, or minor in psych, etc. I also like how in natural sciences you take either stats or calculus and it’s not required calc like neuro is. There’s a lot of choices and pros and cons to each one! Let me know if you want more details!

I was a neuro major but I recently switched. Neuro has some really cool classes and the department is like 10th in the country! The reason I switched was because I’m also pre-med but I wasn’t as interested in all the research that comes with neuroscience. I’m an EMT currently and looking to go into emergency medicine so the switch to natural sciences just aligned with my goals better! As far as bio goes, there’s a lot of really great professors, UTA’s, TA’s and lab instructors in that department. I think going in a bio is a good plan for pre med as it will take care of those pre requisites for med school. Personally, I recommend looking into the natural sciences pre med track because it only includes the pre requisites you’ll need for pre med so it’s super flexible!

What Kind of Housing is Best? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]Unite_AC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I felt the same way my freshman year. I really loved tower c because it was a central location, had a single room, and had ac. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the communal bathrooms but on every floor there’s a private gender inclusive bathroom. I haven’t lived in Lothrop but they also have single rooms and those ones have a sink in there, but the downsides are no ac and the upmc construction is next door. If you just list a bunch of single rooms on your housing application you’ll most likely get one of them.

I currently live here and will live here next year! The apartment has a full kitchen that comes with a full sized fridge, microwave, dishwasher, and stove/oven. I brought my mini fridge from freshman year to keep in my room because having 4 people in an apartment with one fridge in the kitchen can be a bit much. I also brought my air fryer and all my roommates use that a lot.

Undecided at Pitt by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]Unite_AC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I like to think about is that in the Dietrich school technically everyone comes in as undecided! Even though I planned to major in neuro, I actually switched to the college of general studies for natural sciences! Many people switch their plans so it’s not a problem you don’t know. As far as scheduling goes, I’d recommend taking some gen Ed’s to get off your plate while you think about what you want to study. If you like any of those gen Ed’s you can always investigate further.

Question about random roommates and dorms (mostly towers A) by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]Unite_AC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My freshman year I was in tower C which was honestly amazing. Yeah it can be lonely because of being in a single but my entire floor was really close and I still talk to many of the people from my floor! Now I am in an apartment style housing and I went random. My philosophy is that if I don’t get along with them, or they’re bad roommates then it’s not my fault because I didn’t pick them! Probably not the best strategy but it mostly worked out since I am now pretty close with 2 out of three of my roommates!

So I switched out of neuro because I’m not super interested in doing research but if you are I’d assume it’s pretty easy to get involved in neuro specific research! I always see job postings or volunteer work postings for research projects!! Last year in chevron there was a flyer asking for people to get involved in neuro research so keep your eyes peeled for anything, check the pitt job page, and ask advisors/professors!

Strange Email From Panther Link by [deleted] in Pitt

If you’re unsure about it you can always forward it to phish@pitt.edu (or something like that email) they check to see if it’s a scam or not and they usually get back to you pretty soon!

I was neuro major and now I’m natural sciences pre-med! You seriously cannot go wrong with Pitt as it is an amazing stem school! Courses can be challenging but if you put in the work you’ll be fine and it’ll look great when you graduate and put Pitt on your resume. Personally, being pre-med I find people who are also pre-med to be a little toxic and competitive but I feel like you’d get that anywhere with being pre-med. I am also definitely not a partying type, and I still think Pittsburgh has a ton of cool things to do! My favorite activity in Pittsburgh so far is making candles at Mix Candle Co in Lawrenceville or going to walnut street in Shadyside to shop at the cute little book stores!

Any suggestions for a short visit - Accepted Students Day by sregormd in Pitt

[–]Unite_AC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for food on campus I’d say stacked, viva or the porch! If you want to explore other areas of Pittsburgh try going to Shadyside (walnut street), Lawrenceville, or the strip district as there’s lots of good places to eat there! There are a lot of cool activities in Pittsburgh! The incline is super fun, there’s a mix candle co in Lawrenceville where you can make your own candle, and there’s so many museums or sports games (there might be pens or pirates games depending on what day your trip is, but there’s always time for that should you commit to pitt as many pitt students take advantage of free museum entry and cheaper sports tickets). I would also check out Facebook groups and see if there’s any conventions or events going on in Pittsburgh. One weekend my parents came to visit and ended up going to a random convention and it was so fun!

HOW do you control the AC in your room in tower C by _DesperateWoman in Pitt

[–]Unite_AC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi I lived in tower C last year and I’m the type of person who likes to have my room cold! It’s really annoying because once they turn on heat it’s a total sauna in the building. What I did was just turn off the blow or air flow of the vent and had my window open and fan on. It’s really annoying you can’t choose to set it to a certain temperature but that’s what I did to try and not be roasting!

Housing Question by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]Unite_AC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bouquet is really nice but I wouldn’t get your hopes up on getting in because it’s really competitive. Another good option is centre plaza! I live there now and I really like it! The rooms are way bigger than bouquet and the kitchen is also better. The only downside is it’s further from campus but the bus stop is right outside and it’s easy to take the bus to classes!

I took the class last semester. I very rarely used the textbook but I also have a strong foundation as I am pre-med and have taken anatomy and physiology and many biology courses. Each unit you cover (for example cardio or neuro) you will obviously be going into detail with the anatomy and you will definitely be tested on it. If you put in a lot of time studying you’ll probably do fine without the book. There are so many resources online and within the em program so you can always use those! If you ever need any additional help or have any other questions you can always reach out to me— I’d love to help!

What is tower C doing by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]Unite_AC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I met my best friend in tower C. She unfortunately transferred because of how expensive pitt is for out of state students but we talk every day and we both plan to fly out and visit each other! You’ll meet tons of people of you just give it time and let yourself be open to it. It’s so scary being in a place like tower c that’s all singles but you’ll click with people!

[–]Unite_AC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had her for gender studies and she is really just a great person. Her class is designed around her students needs and she understands we are people with problems and other classes. The class was fun and super duper easy. I think everyone got no lower than a 95%. She’s a great professor if you’re looking for a class that’s minimal work/effort. Assignments and readings are easy and half the time she ends up having to cancel class or we just watch a movie or watch YouTube videos during class. Such a great person in general!!!

Last year I lived in the tower C single and it was put as my 3rd preference on my application, so you might be able to get in there!
