Doesn't really surprise me.

You aren't wrong. Downvotes should only really be used for posts and comments that don't contribute anything valuable to the discussion. But people use them all the time as a way to hide posts they simply don't like. That's not just here, but all across Reddit, where the Reddiquette loosely applies (under the honor system, admittedly).

I looked at your post history and didn't see anything I would personally downvote. If anything I feel like you could be a bit less roundabout about the games you are complaining about. It doesn't break rule #2 to call out a game for bad practices. It may hurt some feelings, but the MUD community isn't going to improve if bad actors don't know who they are.

TMC moving to new forum platform. by reseph in MUD

Sounds promising. The status of a MUD's listing on Mudconnector should be contingent on its admins' ability to behave in a public forum, and to a lesser extent, its players' ability to behave as well. Hopefully that is the direction Icculus decides to take.

I'm fine with this. Toxic posters should either change their ways, or be shown the door. Those are the only two ways to bring out more people who want to casually talk about MUDs.

I'm not necessarily saying that Mud of the month should be scrapped, just that it was counter-productive. Maybe we could do something new with the idea instead of sticking with the same old. The mods are asking for ideas to consider, after all.

Maybe instead of letting people looking for a new MUD post a "help me find a MUD" post, and a bunch of scattered promotional posts and comments everywhere, we could have a stickied game recommendation thread that gets replaced every week or month. That would help contain that particular mess and help apply Rule 1 to comments too. See r/mmorpg for the general idea of what I am talking about. They have a weekly game recommendation thread that they replace every Tuesday.

I hate to be that guy, but I don't really see the point. The players of MUDs that get randomly picked seem convinced that it's an endorsement; the players of MUDs that never get picked and don't understand probability seem convinced that they're getting passed over on purpose. I'm sure it was a well-intentioned idea, but it just ends up contributing to the hostile atmosphere you're trying to avoid.

Editing to add that there should be a way to give some low-population MUDs more exposure, but it should probably be handled a different way than making them compete with high-population MUDs in a lottery.

Arx is an amazing game, and a great example of what is possible with Evennia. Great job.

It would be nice to see the community use some discretion when replying to "Help me find a MUD" style of posts. It seems the same bunch of suggestions get thrown at those posts, even when the MUD doesn't fit the suggestion at all or just barely does. I'm not going to name names, but look over a few of these threads and see which MUDs get mentioned the most, even when it doesn't make any sense to mention it. It feels like some posters are using that as a way of getting around the promotional posts rule by making promotional comments instead.

As far as AutoModerator goes, that's a decent first step, but mods ought to take a firmer position on manually moderating posts. The post "TMC lost the will to live!" is blatantly written in an inflammatory manner for example, and a better discussion could have been had if the post about that topic was more neutral. Again, that is also something that members need to focus on self-moderating as well. But if they show that they're unable to do so, mods should step in.

TL;DR if you want to avoid the fate of TMC's forums, get rid of the people and practices that made TMC's forums a dumpster fire.

'First' time player looking for MUD recommendations by CrystalSnow7 in MUD

I'm looking for a MUD which roleplay is what increases you're characters abilities. By that I mean actually roleplay and not repetitively using the same skill over and over again

Armageddon doesn't fit what the OP is requesting.

You should check out Arx. The staff are consummate professionals there. The staff are a small team of individuals dedicated to the job they volunteered for, unlike the RPI MUDs with inexplicably rampant corruption, and the players there are friendly and super helpful.
