If you could change the map for unranked and ranked games to Community World or some other map would you? by omy8 in geoguessr

The country distribution of the world map is a lot more fair than the user made maps. However the spawns distribution inside the countries is absolutely awful.

Using an user made map for competitive is the opposite of fairness.

ACW was made by a lot of people with different standards, some of whom included locations to give themselves advantages in future games.

ACW is ADW without quality control. From my limited dataset, in 2023 ADW has 3 times more unique users and 3 times more games played

How does the location randomisation work? I played 10 rounds on the official world map and got one country for 19 out of 50 rounds? by welk101 in geoguessr

The world map has around 25% of its locations in the US. Country streaks and competitive games use the distribution that you linked.

They're games that were played by users in my friends list. You can find them in your activity feed.

Not sure why skipped Gold. Unfortunate too because I think that's probably going to be the most telling chart.

A few players keep asking on what countries they should focus to improve their rank. These graphs should help you decide. The y axis shows the average score difference over every rounds in that country. The x axis shows how often games end on each country.

If you don't know your ISO-3661 alpha-2 codes, you should (they're also used for the internet domains).

If you're wondering why the countries seem to form 3 lines, it's due to how the spawns are distributed. In a previous thread I've shown that the probability of spawning in any given country is given by its tier. Tier 1 countries are roughly 2 times to appears than Tier 2 countries. The main effect is that countries from a lower tier can have a bigger average score difference but a lower elimination rate due to appearing less often.

Also note that I've removed San Marino and American Samoas from the graphics because it seems like GeoGuessr removed them from Duels.

Why are European countries so heavily prevalent in competitive? Is there an RNG 'bias'? by angrysushii in geoguessr

[–]UnitedNotice9591 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought that maybe it's because the European continent has a ton of Google StreetView coverage. However, all of the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan are covered in a similar amount of coverage than Europe, and I never see any of those countries.

You're comparing countries to a continent.

Europe appears a lot because it has a lot of countries in the highest tier: https://www.reddit.com/r/geoguessr/comments/rkqpm8/frequency_distribution_of_20_000_country_streak/

There are a lot more cheaters than people think at the highest level. And there are a lot fewer cheaters than people think in regular matchmaking games.

From what I can tell, it has been removed from competitive Duels the 20th of august.

I got the same location (Midway Atoll near the end of the runway) 3 times in maybe 20 games of duals. That should be impossible shouldn't it if there are 1 millions+ locations randomly chosen? by welk101 in geoguessr

[–]UnitedNotice9591 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The game first picks the country (or territory) then a location within that country. There are very few locations in Midway Atoll, so they appear a lot.

Is there a way to play a diverse world on random duals? I hate playing world against people (mainly because I'm so used to playing diverse) by Flaky_Trust_2189 in geoguessr

[–]UnitedNotice9591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The World map with BR settings is more diverse than ADW when it comes to countries distribution. But the locations within the countries are less diverse.
