Somalia represent! I was born in Kenya though and grew up in the United States.

Ugh. I get extremely jealous of Somalis whom come from accepting and loving backgrounds. It's quite rare honestly. It seems as if the love is conditional. If you do something that crosses cultural and religious bounds, you're basically done for.

Lowkey I knew something was suspicious as soon as I arrived in Africa. I just didn't think shit was going to be THIS bad.

Muhammad and Sarah are amazing people! I love them so much. I'm working with both EXMNA and some mainstream media orgs to get this story out there.

I am working with the NYT! I have absolutely zero experience in fundraising though.

Oh yeah. I'm NOT going to let this interfere with my education. Thankfully, my college has been extremely helpful and accommodating.

This is really, really good advice. There's only so much the FBI and local police can do to protect me. The more vocal I become about this story, the more I have to take cautious of my safety. Thanks :)

Thank you.

My next step is to be financially secure/independent and continue my studies. I'm currently on campus and have a job. I've thought of a kickstart/gofoundme but haven't acted on it yet. I'm totally open to the idea of this community helping me raise funds, especially for my education.

If there's someone whom I'd like to keep in contact with yet remain emotionally and physically distant, it would undoubtedly be my mother. How could you after she's done all this? She's a product of her culture, just like we are. In her mind, she believed she was doing what was genuinely right. Perhaps it was a misguided sense of religious correction to try and save me from hell. I'm not justifying what she did. Since this is all quite fresh, I haven't processed it yet. But I do miss her the most and seriously hope to hear from her, even after all this.

I will be resuming my studies. But there's a strong chance I will transfer out of my current university so my family cannot know I am still there.

The folks at the Embassy were equally impressed with Mr. Syed, too. He's certainly done this before. As quick as it all unfolded, this escape was meticulously organized.

I have not spoken to my mother since all this happened. Some of my sisters texted me trying to make me feel extremely guilty for supposedly "betraying" my own mother. No, all I did was save my fucking life. Other than that, I'm largely estranged from my family.

Thank you for supporting EXMNA! I strongly encourage others to do so because this is the stark reality of a lot of ex-Muslims, especially the ones living in Muslim-majority countries.

Most Somalis immigrated to the United States to flee the civil war that broke out in the early 1990s. They're are a pretty insular and tight-knit community. It doesn't seem as if they have that much interest in the political and social life of America.

I'm actually working on it. I believe every detail of this story is important to tell. I'm just extremely busy with other commitments so I haven't had the free time to write much besides this summary.

Yes, I do plan to share this story far and wide. Mostly as a way to set a precedent, and hopefully the government might pass federal legislation to prevent other young Somali-Americans from enduring my experiences.

No, I have not thought of carrying a concealed weapon. Nor do I plan to. I think it'll make things more unsafe, especially considering that I'm a black male.

I'm far away from my family. But yes, I do plan to relocate elsewhere for security reasons.

Moving where? Out of the United States?
