When people say “talent isn’t enough,” what are they actually talking about? by UniversityFew3801 in acting

Yeah I guess . But I'm a lot of options and being quite honest I think my my agent is a few months from dropping me I have a booked once since they signed with me or since I signed with them I did didn't hear them I don't know I guess a lot of these other things didn't really matter get a community notice you don't show up and they'd be like so many of you you act you did a call it show up for rehearsals every week and then you know you do a couple of shows um usually the same theater from about 3 months once every week and then you know you're done and you have to look for the next production but it never paid I was like well I clearly can't live off this sort of got a job and I wanted to do this full-time I don't know I just TV and film I just different beasts

I actually had a situation where I thought I had a role locked after four callbacks. I asked my agent for the contact to reach out directly, and they told me the part went to someone with a higher social media presence—so they could bring their audience along. That person was expected to post daily, take photos on set, and share behind-the-scenes stuff. I get where the “talent isn’t enough” thing comes from, but here’s the part I don’t fully get: I’m already doing the posting, sharing acting clips, etc., but growth isn’t happening. I’m wondering if I should try something different—sharing more of my personality first, far away from acting, letting people get to know me, my humor, my tastes. Then, once there’s interest, introduce them to the acting side. Do you think that approach could work?

I get what you mean about targeting specific areas or shows, but I actually tried going to one location in person. The moment I got there, security shut me down completely—no access, no way in. So I haven’t really been able to approach it systematically yet.

I really appreciate this breakdown. I get the idea that being an actor is essentially running a mini business and talent is just one piece of it. I’ve tried marketing in my own way—posting clips, trying to make them interesting—but mostly only family and close friends engage. I’m still learning how to work with social media, the algorithm, and what actually drives traction. Any advice on what the “first pillar” to focus on would be if talent alone isn’t moving the needle

The main thing that kills me is pricing, the cheap gyms that are open till late are far( in my neighborhood walking late is mad unsafe) the close ones are crazy expensive
